yeah ...well westerners have very very fragile ego, more fragile than children, they can't have such sultry and sexy and arousing voice lines in west. no sir, it would be a field day with twitter babies.
Even in English, there's a moment where you show up before Alphinaud and Haurchefant offers to warm you up. Alphinaud walks up and says that would be great because he's cold, and Haurchefant's general reaction is "Oh, Alphinaud, you're here too."
French Haurchefant is a total trip too. When Alphinaud walks in he says "Oh fancy seeing you here Alphinaud, the WoL and I were just talking about the good old days" when he was actually hitting on you. XD
Reminds me a little of Outlaw Star. I don't remember a LOT about that anime (other than I liked it and the ending made no sense to me...), but I remember his friend, the head of that big corporation, who is openly gay and hits on the main character a lot. And while he calls the kid sidekick, Jim, bu his more formal name, James, he clearly sees him as just a kid while seeing Jean as the object of his desire.
Ahaha, *I love that* Haurchefant says all that thirsty stuff about adventurers in skimpy clothing with bulging muscles _right in front of Aymeric_ because Haurchefant don't even care. It makes me love them both even more. Aymeric is just like: _blinks in a dignified and noble manner_ "I'm no kinkshamer. Get down, if it please you," and Haurchfant is straight-up enthusiastically fantasizing about you out loud, and does not give an ounce of chocobo shite who can hear him.
When he goes "...SPLENDID!" And then his face goes from smile, to sort of neutral frowny, zeppie takes a hard step back with those WIDE kitty eyes. and you can tell she's thinking, '...shit!'
Even in English we could sense a bit of a connection with Haurchefant that went deeper than friendship. He was your biggest fan and cheerleader, but there was always something more personable about it, something possibly romantic brewing. He picks up with WoL when they are down, gives them a home when they have none. It's why most players like Ishgard more than any of the other grand companies and wished we could have them as an option. I think it's also why his death sticks with the WoL all the way to Endwalker.
Exactly this. The ENG version always felt like he was a kind and noble soul but with the underlying subtext of a bit of flirtation with the WoL that could have led somewhere if the story didn't have other ideas. I don't think I would have felt the same with the JPN version. Sure he is funny and memorable but considering the overall storyline when you meet him, it's way too much. I don't think I would be so wistful about JPN Haurchefant as I am with ENG one.
You know this makes a more believable reason why his father and brothers adopted us(that is what being ward is)... they thought we were to be the new in-laws soon and Tataru and Alphinaud were just our "extended family"

If there is anyone I wouldn't mind hitting on me, it is Haurchefant. You are a cherished friend good sir knight. May the light of your warm smile ever shine apon the snows of Ishgard
English Haurchefant: A precious, beautiful cinnamon roll who must be protected at all costs, and who will be mourned forever. Japanese Haurchefant: Three sex offenders in a trenchcoat.
Lol, this. I'm of a multicultural heritage -- of which Japanese is one -- and I can understand Japanese well enough to not need subtitles, but...I just don't much care for that version of Haurchefant. At all. Not even a little. I'm familiar with the character trope Japanese Haurchefant follows and I was never fond of it. The English version still manages to convey his love for the WoL without it being so over the top (some might even say creepy). If anything, I think the love Haurchefant had for the WoL comes through better in English specifically because he /doesn't/ seem so 'thirsty'. It was more 'I deeply respect/admire you and value you as a person' and less 'I just want to bang you'.
@@Bandikitty I agree! a lot of ppl here in the comments seem to wish the localization team had left his characterization fully intact but I for one and very glad for the decision to change his vibe towards the player from verbal sexual harassment to admiration and yearning. love basing headcanons on his jp characterization though
@@Bandikitty exactly. I truly thought that the English version of Haurchefant was head over heels in love with the WoL and that they had a budding relationship at the time of his demise. I was a wreck for at least three or so days, that's how much I had grown to love the guy.
Ever since that scene. I have honestly had my entire ff14 story revolve solely around that one single scenario. To this day I use his and ONLY his shield for my style on paladin. I even grinded out the whole vigil set and have it as a specific glamor solely because I wear it for him. And you won’t catch me crying, not now not ever. @@xTysere I always believed he had character. Its just eye-opening to see how much the localization changed him. It wouldn't surprise me, if this happened to other characters
Some Japanese tropes that don't translate, which is weird because they are grounded in western culture too. Haurchefant is lusty in love and war, like Achilles, who has his sexuality stripped too. The Iliad is spicy when its not an English translation. Asahi is power mad, emphasis on mad, and descending further into madness, power hungry is a fatal flaw, in the US they would have him on Fox and Friends. This same character flaw is why everyone ends up dead in Shakespeare.
@@StabYourBrain Have to rewatch in german since I play in English, but my friend was rather baffled when she found out about the japanese version. So I don't think he's like this in german XD
l have always played in Japanese since l still struggle with spoken English, he never bothered me the slightest. l found him funny and socially awkward with his voice lines, though the written English ones didn´t seem to match with his voice lines for me and now l understand why, haha. Cultural differences aside, l can understand why some may find his original personality creepy, but personally, l always thought he was just unable to properly express his feelings for your character, he didn´t seem to have any bad intentions beyond courting you...Aggressively. All in all, l definitely miss him.
@@ZeplaHQ Haha, me too. Not to say English is bad, all the opposite, l think they did a good job with it as well. ls just that l really enjoyed his hype tone in Japanese a lot, it perfectly matched his emotes and the way he approached you every time.
I just started playing FFXIV and, even though the English voice lines are much more subtle, I always got the underlying impression of romanticism from Haurchefant. Even more so if you play through the Dragoon story line and [minor spoiler] you hear that he was willing to fight an entire contingency of guards to come and fight beside you when he realizes you were battling against a dragon. Haurchefant was always meant to be your Knight in Shining Armor... My character definitely loved him in return... and it hit somewhere deep in my heart when Lord Artoirel called me "sister".
Not to mention that, in the English lines, if you go talk to Biggs post-Vault, dude straight-up says "I, uhh, heard about your man Haurchefant... Sorry for your loss, player." One can imply that they mean 'your man' as in 'comrade', but they could have said 'friend' or similar to that. SO....I'M JUST SAYING....
Haurchefant is, and will forever be, bae. Perving out a bit aside, he was always honest with the player, always believed in the player and treated the player like a true friend that he would do anything for. He always wanted to be there for you and help, and had so much personality that it actually left a void when he was gone. No one else has really filled that void since for me.
There is no way it wasn't just a crush. The man full out LOVED the warrior of light enough to try to fight by their side (when the knights mentioned it took multiple men to hold him back), and give his life for the WoL. His thirst was intense, but he seriously was in love with the WoL
I just played thru this for the first time recently and you better believe I dropped everything to go create a brand new glamour plate with the alpine coat and finest dyes for the occasion...

JP audio with English text is my favorite, as the actual dialogue makes him a good hearted cinnamon roll, but the *performance* still conveys that he's a massive fucking fanboy of yours. The sexual bent is still lost in translation, but all the enthusiasm is there and it adds an endearing level of dorkiness to his character. But I can understand the actual text changes, cause some of that is pretty out there lmao.
SPOILERS After seeing this his final words are a bit more fitting. Japanese players probably thought he wanted nothing but to get into their pants but in the end he compliments their lovely smiles. It shows he wasn’t a shallow skirt-chaser in the end.
イイ!!I am so happy you made this video! I always try and explain to my Non-Japanese speaking friends who play the game how truly dear Haurchy is (and why I love him so much) but now I can just show them this video! I never knew they changed the animations either so this was an interesting watch. To add, I also noticed whilst playing that Ser Aymeric is more forward and assertive in the Japanese (and shows more emotion) than in the English localisation. I wonder if anyone else noticed that? It's making me want to do detailed comparison now!!
While I love how japanese Harchie is very 'plz lemme smash', I do think the English version fits the overall conservative and repressive themes of Ishgard. He still is an Ishgardian after all, I'd expect that kind of discource from a Limsa Lominsan. As always, #NeverForgetHarchie #MahBro
He still has a comment about a very revealing outfit included in the delivery to Revenant's Toll with the hint it was meant as a gift for you from him. (revealing outfits are very hard and thus very expensive to obtain in ishgard due to the weather and conservative culture). So he still def has a crush on the WoL but isnt as blatant about it.
If you look at the way repressive societies affect the people that live in them, Japanese Haurchefant completely makes sense. Folks who grow up uber conservative will often go to the other extreme very quickly, which explains why the trope is so common in Japan(and helps explain why Japan has so much weird stuff).
Hey Zepla, French Haurchie is MUCH the same as JP Haurchie. I was...quite shooketh the first time I saw his French dialogue xD Among the fic writers, though, Haurchefant is often characterized somewhere in the middle. The flirtiness and outright playfullness (and some of the thirst) as the JP/FR Haurch, but with the kindness, formality, and grandeur of the English version.
to be honest i was shocked by the serious of the english haurchefant since i'm french , this video just showed me why maybe english people might not like him as much as we do in france :D
@@Elypsen The French script for the game is translated from the Japanese script, while the English one is written as its own thing and is not a direct translation of the Japanese one. This may be the reason why
nope that cinematic in french is the exact same shit than in english our version is absolutely not translated from japanese but from english like everything else and the voice actor is dead inside the french haurchefant is really crappy and flat
I fell in love with him halfway through Heavensward, when he said “a knight lives to serve, to aid those in need”. Seeing how thirsty he is in Japanese I was like “why couldn’t you be like this in English”!!!!! Also that line “a warm bed waits for your return” all I thought was “are you in it 😘”
My favorite part is right after he asks if the player character is cold and come to his room to warm up, then alphinaud suddenly shows up and says something like that’s very kind of you, I really need a warm room right now. He didn’t expect him to be there so he greets him awkwardly and starts to talk about the quest like nothing happened. That’s where the story shows the player character is special. It’s such a pity the localization cuts all these lines. Usually they made up new lines but sometimes they just didn’t care and skipped them. Whether it’s because they want him sounds decent to female characters, or simply can’t deal with the gayness because he says the exact same lines to male characters, we will never know. Another interesting part that got lost in translation largely thanks to this is how it adds to aymeric’s character when he talks about the relationship between the player character and haurchefant (and no wonder that line is deleted, yes yes). He too has a close friend mode when he’s alone with player character, and a serious, formal mode when other people present. But he has to keep the distance in his position and can never get that close like haurchefant.
"how it adds to aymeric’s character when he talks about the relationship between the player character and haurchefant (and no wonder that line is deleted, yes yes)" wait....what does aymeric say? i must know?!?!
@@gerse111 "Yes, I know the two of you were close" is Aymeric's response if you choose "Life for death, I will have Zephirin's heart for this" after *that dungeon*

*Fangirl squeals throughout the whole video* *cries at the end* He was truly, truly splendid. Yoshi p why did you take the one NPC I actually cared about!? What happened in heavensward omg I needed like a day to mourn this fictional character. I was so distraught that was such BS like... here's a character that is almost loved by EVERYONE, he's a bro to some a husbando to others and actually gives a crap about the WoL. He will come in and save you if he's in the area, and even when the WoL took on shiva it took a dozen or half a dozen men to stop him from chasing after you while you fought a freaking primal! No npc before or since then had that much devotion towards the WoL. Zepla...please make another video about all the text of this splendid knight. It hurts to see how bad they butchered him in English but it feels much better knowing that he truly cared for the WoL, I mean most likely he was in love with the WoL but saying that is gonna make me cry again.
Actually, I just saw somewhere else recently from an interview with him that when Yoshi found out how much the English localization toned Haurchefant down from the Japanese, he was horrified. Unfortunately, too late to go back and fix it.
I know this comment is 2 years old, but I also had to take some time off after he died... I mourned him for two weeks at least, and even had a nightmare about it. Guess I was too attached 😅 But who can blame me, right? Now I just write stories where he's still alive and well, and even with all the different glamours I've put over my armor, I still fight with the Fortemps shield to honor him in-game 💔
Maybe the localization team didn't have the wherewithal to compose an entirely new shot for such dry dialogue. But an animated camera wouldn't fit the English dialogue anyway
You probably already know the answer to this... The anime community experiences it often with regards to accuracy - they just didn't want to keep it the same.
I KNEW IT!!! I still totally got the he has hots for you vibes in the English version. Especially when all the other characters are like ooh yeah you two were closer than most. Hahahhaa.
In one of the early Heavensturn seasonal quests you are asked to choose between Horse and Chocobo for favorite steed. At some point Haurchfant shows up and when he is asked to choose his favorite steed he says something like he'd rather mount your character(!). There was more context about what he meant but boy.... Yeah they kind of HAD to edit that one in English
What happened to Haurchefant was truly devastating! I was brought to my knees, bloodlust cutting off all me senses. The only work coming to mind was "revenge"
I had a feeling he had the hots for the WoL. There's the cutscene where he walks around the table while "sizing you up" so to speak and I sure as hell didn't miss the fact that the ensuing dialog after had shirtless recruits doing pushups in the background. I still wish we got the Japanese dialog though. That would have been awesome or should I say splendid!
Spoilers! Japanese Haurchefant is the best. And I love that it doesn't matter what gender you are, his love for the WoL is deep. At first that kind of anime character where you are like... oh boy. But as we build towards HW they just develop him so much in the Japanese... makes that moment so powerful depending on how you the player reciprocated his emotions. For a straight male and my character a straight male, he was that over enthusiast homosexual friend who embraced who he was and wasn't afraid to let others know how he feels. His love and admiration where one and the same. While I didn't return his love, I appreciated all the help he proved through out the game. When he died... it left such a pit in my stomach. He sacrificed himself and I couldn't return his feelings in the way he wanted me too at the end. Or maybe I finally did but it took his sacrifice for me to finally show it. Or at least that I loved him as a friend. That genuine feeling of lost and guilt and love all mixed together hit hard during that moment. Honestly finally seeing the English version, its not surprising his death didn't impact some players as much as it has others. Honestly it's one of the reason I switched to the Japanese audio very early in the game. One reason was because I didn't really care for the English voices but I was also curious in the Japanese audio and how heavy the localization was. It's pretty drastic at times. Honestly I feel English Alphinaud and Alisaie are different people from the Japanese version or how they act if you just went strictly with the English localized subtitles. Makes me glad they put in more voice acting parts in the cutscenes.
HAHA! Loved the ending! I heard the French version can be even more raunchy. Although I kinda like that there are different versions I feel bad I didn't realise that haurchefant was hitting on us the whole time. Although there's still lil hints of it in the eng version. I don't know if i would feel the same way if I had read the japan version from the get go. Love that slow burn romance, mainly coz my char is too dense to notice someone flirting with them har har :')
I wish we got the Japanese version too! It would have made him a lot more interesting. Oddly enough, he didn't leave a big impression on my when I first played.
I love this thirsty Haurchefant, he's hilarious but I also like the more restrained one too. Honestly, if I encountered the forward sex maniac one first, I'd be shocked and mostly wary, but it might grow on me.
I loved Haurchefant from the first and every time I saw him in game I just wanted to give him a hug, recently I just finished that scene in Havensward... I still didn't recover enough to pick up the game again...
Not going to lie, I had a total crush on him and that was me playing the English version! I was devastated when you know what happened, was in absolute tears!
I had heard he was more forward in JP but I had NO idea exactly how far that went. He's so much more exuberant qq Bless this man. Thank you for sharing :) I still go visit him up there on that ledge from time to time, just to say hi.

Really. And now, he is my first one loved character ! Japanese version is the best :p Thank you for the laugh !
Since I play with the japanese voice acting and english subs, I always get confused when the subs are different from the dub. I am no expert in Japanese, but I noticed some weird things.
yeah if you watch enough anime, there are words you tend to pick up and instantly know what they mean and when the subtitles say something completely different, it can be jarring.
You know. A smile better befits a hero. I kinda always wondered about a few of our player reactions around him... they changed the lines but some of our animations are still in there. That man loved us, regardless of player race or gender, and I have to wonder why they changed it for us... granted I'm still confused about half the things they changed in Kingdom Hearts II for us too so, I would have prefered these original lines of text though. It would have had a much bigger impact!
Man, hearing these makes me think the devs truly desired to have him be the WoL’s love interest, which makes a certain scene even more emotional. Will not say what happens in case anyone hasn’t yet seen it. One of my favorite Elezen by far.
A friend and I had a hunch about him being into the WoL just weren't sure how deep it actually is/was but dang this level of thirst is chart breaking, I still love him even if he was pervy in the JP version
LOOOOL OMG I would have loved flirty Haurchefant!!! Man such a shame they localized all that out. I guess they were afraid it wouldn't have been received well. Thank you for sharing this!
I knew I liked him more than any other NPC; I just didn't know why until now. :D I also love how after every line we get a nice, perturbed shot of your character. XD
I personally think it has a lot to do with the dynamics of how Japanese and American/European cultures (especially today) view sexual advances. For the Japanese they can be a mix of endearing/comedic, for American and European audiences we're looking at a culture more weary of such open invitation.
Feels more like an anime character in Japanese version... Personally I like the English version more, the maturity behind the lightheartedness shines brighter
I dunno... perhaps it would be fun and all, but in the end, the more serious Haurchefant truly felt like a brother to me, and his final fate brought me no end of grief over him. I think I feel more attached to his character that way.
Thank you SO much for this video! As a huge Haurchefant fan I giggled and blushed to his Splendidness! 😍 If ever there was a character that you could romance, it would be him! ❤ Someone needs to make a video about Haurchefant with the music "Love me like you do" playing! 🤩

Haurchefant is the thirtiest character of the whole game. I do believe the explainations about his character card for the card battle game also have a little "precise" description of how he would like to have the WoL to be "riding" with him or something like that.
this explains why always got a creepy vibe from him.... i still love him to death tho. my headcanon is now him diving infront of the blast screaming "I WILL PROTECT YOUR GLORIOUS BODY WOL"

If there is anyone I wouldn't mind hitting on me, it is Haurchefant. You are a cherished friend good sir knight. May the light of your warm smile ever shine apon the snows of Ishgard
Oof, friendzoned him.
English Haurchefant: A precious, beautiful cinnamon roll who must be protected at all costs, and who will be mourned forever.
Japanese Haurchefant: Three sex offenders in a trenchcoat.
I am seriously reconsidering the "Knight of House Fortemp" title I use for so long now. Japanese is the house of weird.
English Haurchefant: "Very well then"
Japanese Haurchefant: "You want some fuc"
It breaks my heart to see that he was reduced to a sleazebag in the original. I'm so, so happy with the localization team's decision to characterize him they way they did in English.

When I got to 'that' part in HW, I straight-up started bawling hysterically and screaming in rage all at once. I was a wreck for at least three or so days, that's how much I had grown to love the guy.
I had similar experience, after that scene I exited and cried myself to sleep for 2 more days. I was so depressed.
Ever since that scene. I have honestly had my entire ff14 story revolve solely around that one single scenario. To this day I use his and ONLY his shield for my style on paladin.

Exactly. A little awkward, but pretty normal. It just doesn't translate directly in the same way.
Sorry for your loss, player."
One can imply that they mean 'your man' as in 'comrade', but they could have said 'friend' or similar to that.

And shortly after that.... Also lost a somewhat big sister figure also ;-;
I knew I wasn’t imagining it! And people called me silly for thinking he had a crush on the warrior of light!
Not just a crush. That man full blown lusted for us. Lol
There is no way it wasn't just a crush. The man full out LOVED the warrior of light enough to try to fight by their side (when the knights mentioned it took multiple men to hold him back), and give his life for the WoL. His thirst was intense, but he seriously was in love with the WoL
I caught it as well during my playthrough. In my headcanon for my character she fell for him and they became lovers.
There is a lot of fluff for many of the NPCs, so you can basically make any couple work for yourself. Hauchefaunt is just... a bit more pronounced.

After seeing this his final words are a bit more fitting. Japanese players probably thought he wanted nothing but to get into their pants but in the end he compliments their lovely smiles. It shows he wasn’t a shallow skirt-chaser in the end.

I love the horrified expression on your face after the lines. XD
Everyone ships themselves with him and I don't blame them.
Warrior of Light sexual indeed....
Splendid.

Fun fact, his Triple Triad card has his quote as "I say, be my steed!" from that quest.
Yeah I remember that. He says the same in german
Those knights were so distracting, I was like why are the vibes in here distinctly sexual but now I know why.

I personally think it has a lot to do with the dynamics of how Japanese and American/European cultures (especially today) view sexual advances. For the Japanese they can be a mix of endearing/comedic, for American and European audiences we're looking at a culture more weary of such open invitation.
Mainly because it comes with a threat of someone doing something non consensual. Japanese tend to have much more self control.
That's why I always put voices in japanese when the OV is japanese.
He basically loved me..?

this explains why always got a creepy vibe from him.... i still love him to death tho. my headcanon is now him diving infront of the blast screaming "I WILL PROTECT YOUR GLORIOUS BODY WOL"
I loved him then, and always imagined he was flirting...and now I ADORE HIM MY PRECIOUS ELEZEN AAAHHHHH
WTF I did expect that the characters get a lot different characterization (at the time people already discussed how different some dialogue from Haurchefant was in some translations) but I didn't expect THAT much of a difference even with completely different scenes and camera angles. Uff...you really gotta play the story more than once to see every aspect of it.^^'
I love the english locaization and translation but I still wanna notice differences like that from time to time. xD
Thanks for the video on that Zepla! =3
EDIT: He is such a pervy perv in japanese I love him even more there! xD
I always felt that he gave off a flirtatious tone but wow did we really miss out. Makes me consider switching my game to the Japanese voices >.> We miss you Haurchefant!
zepla's look of horror and shock as haurchefant speaks brings joy to my heart :')
