In the 1960s a strange Italian guy, Sergio Leone, decides he will make Westerns without ever setting foot in the US. He gets an unknown song writer, Ennio Morricone to write the score. In 2018 The Danish National Symphony honors them with this concert.

Morricone was a brilliant film score composer.
Spaghetti Western because they are made by Italian directors and Italian studios. The 'Dollar' trilogy was mainly filmed in Almaria in southern Spain (as a substitute for the American West). By the time Leone had moved on to Once Upon a Time in the West - one of the greatest films of any genre ever made - he shot much of it in America, in locations such as Monument Valley, because of their association with the great John Ford westerns shot in those locations.

It is called spaghetti western because they were in most cases either made by Italian film companies and / or Italian directors. Sergio Leone is the most famous of them, but coincidentally he shot a lot of his westerns in Spain.

  • @kehdepermit

The 2nd song beginning at 7:50, The Ecstacy of Gold, is one of my favorite movie soundtrack scores. No one could have come up with that for a scene with Tuco running through the graveyard except Ennio Morricone.

    • @PainInTheS
      @PainInTheS 9 місяців тому +3

Lucasarts, the game division of Lucasfilm (Star wars) did a cowboy/western first person shooter back in 1997, called 'Outlaws'. The music in that game is VERY remiscent of 'The ecstacy of gold' and actually all music from these Spaghetti western movies and truly great.....the game takes lots of cues from the old westerns and the protagonist is a cartoon version of Clint Eastwood, very obviously so. I LOVED playing that game!
The music can easily be looked up on yt.
      The sawmill
      The last gunfight
Those 2 tracks immediately have you think 'The ecstacy of gold'.
But that whole game soundtrack is a masterpiece of its own, an ode to the Morricone western music.

In my opinion, The Ecstasy of Gold is just a cult piece of music. I put it in the same ranking as, let me think.....LIKE A ROLLING STONE (Dylan), SHE LOVES YOU (Beatles), JOHNNY BE GOOD (Chuck Berry), MY WAY (Sinatra), GIMME SHELTER (The Stones), 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (soundtrack as well), MOONDANCE (Van Morrison), THE PROMISED LAND (Springsteen) and so on !!!

It's the DR1 (and National) Symphony Orchestra, which is the Danish equivalent to the English BBC1 Symphony Orchestra, so their mission is not to push or provide a special brand or "taste" in music, but all about providing top quality public service to make all who watch and listen, and not least children and younger people get a taste for this kind of symphony orchestra music, also for educational purpose and to "nurture" their development. So they do quite a lot of film, TV and video game music.

This is brilliant beyond belief, it's one of the few things I'd pay $1,000 to see, everything they do is amazing. The Wah Wah lady, Tuva Semmingsen (born 13 January 1975) is a Norwegian mezzo-soprano and coloratura singer. She's amazing and listen to her other songs she does with them. She's wearing gun shaped earrings too. You're listening to 2 pieces of music from the movie, Ennio Morricone (1928-2020) wrote it along with many other film scores, the man IS a legend and rightly so, this is the last movie of a trilogy, all known as "Spaghetti Westerns", A Fistful of Dollars (1964) For A Few Dollars More (1965) and this film (1966) all scored by Ennio Morricone and all directed by legendary Italian director Sergio Leone (1929-1989), both composer and director have had a massive influence on many other composers and directors, also Christine Nonbo Andersen, Danish soprano vocalist, born 1985 was also amazing.

The movie was released in December of 1967 - I was in college, and it was so different from everything else on the radio at the time. As best I can remember, this version is very close to the original soundtrack; the galloping guitar rhythm, the bird calls, and all the rest. This cut is actually two pieces from the film: the Main Title, and "The Ecstacy of Gold".
The instrument is called clap boards. Also heard was an ocorina (the medium register bird sounds) and a recorder.

I have seen many concerts, but regret not going to Ennio Morricone while I still had the chance.
There is no humour in this.....this music is everything, these movies are everything. Once upon a time in the west is even better, that's the best movie ever made, best filmscore ever, most beautiful woman ever with Claudia Cardinale.
Hearing this music immediately sends shivers up my spine and my eyes get wet. The melancholy it evokes in me is off the charts. I must have seen those movies a 100 times.....cinema perfection and the music that goes with it is of equal beauty.
Never ever will such perfect films be made again.....there's one every once in a while that comes close, but nothing will ever surpass. The grandiosity of the music is of the same caliber. What a joy!

Spaghetti western were western produced by Italian film companies and mostly filmed in Spain as Spain has many climates and some near desert conditions ideal for representing SW States of America.

There were also a series of German language westerns called Sauerkraut Westerns which were produced in Germany but filmed in Yugoslavia now Croatia, I think.
Not particularly famous for their music though.

The Danish National Symphony does a lot of these movie theme songs, and every one I've seen has been fantastic.

The Danish National Symphony is great. I grew up watching all the spaghetti westerns with Clint Eastwood. I absolutely love all the theme songs from them. I have the "Hugo Montenegro" version doing all the theme songs (A Fistful Of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More & The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, Hang 'Em High) on record & on cd. It is one of my favorite albums.

The Sixties were pretty creative. This came out in 1966, back when the Beatles topped the charts. A lot of wordless vocalization in this piece, a bit like what you'd find a few years later in Pink Floyd's "The Great Gig in the Sky" (1973).

Yes, Spaghetti western because shooted by italian director Sergio Leone (an italian versione of western film , various italian directors and production). The Music Is by The Maestro Ennio Morricone (in the case of "The good, the bad and the ugly) an italian composer. The Danish orch bring an homage to the great Maestro Morricone. Hello from Italy, your reaction are very interesting! Great Job and funny to Watch. Just subscribed. Where are you from?

Hard to believe that Ennio Moriconne had this in his head and passed it on to an orchestra....mind blowing music!

The magnificent classical music has inspired SO much of our modern music, & will continue to do so, as long as humans make music. Thanks for your reaction.

Ennio Morricone was one of the best modern composers. The Ecstasy of Gold, it's so spiritually uplifting!
