In the past, Korean women did hardly cut their hair. So it was possible to make these hair styles. If the hair wasn't enough, Korean women used Gache, Korean traditional wig. ^0^ Thanks for watching~ XD
@@romella_karmey well, beauty definition is different in different era. And since it was considered disrespectful for them to cut their hair, I guess they would have to be creative on how to handle such a long hair. So they did all sorts of designs and ways to set it. Of course it doesnt look comfy for us (and probably for them too), but again, they would wanna make a statement of the hair fashion of their time but at the same time, dont want to be disrespectful to their culture.
I am not Korean, but I absolutely LOVE the Korean culture. From Gogureyo until Current Korea (North and South). I read so much about them. It is so rich and everything about its culture has deep thought connected to it. From their writing to the food, and everything in between. The people are so strong even the Chinese couldn't completely control them. I could go on and on. But I always wondered how the women got the hair pieces for their hairstyles. Did the poor sell their hair? Was it horse hair (I doubt it). I can't find any writing about this. Anyway, Korean women, I think, are the most beautiful women in the world and I am obsessed with their past fashions, hair, and makeup. Great video!
Pdx Paula Love your comment! 😍 I agree with all you said. And about the hair, yes poor women often sold their hair. Gache (traditional wig) was made with real hair, so it was extremely expensive... like one big gache was as expensive as a few houses.
I've always wondered how those hairstyles were made. My grandmother was korean and I relatively know very little about Korea since I was born in the United States. I would love to know more about korean culture and its history. I speak Korean but I'm very bad at writing and reading it, but I'm working on it
8:15 Is so gorgeous! and the accessories are so beautiful. but it must weigh down their heads a lot. I wonder how they used to wear it for long periods of time.
So make my hair into a donut then just make like I'm playing kerplunk. Got it. ..... All jokes aside, the fact that these hairstyles are still preserved is amazing. There's truly an artistry to the styles and how you wore it said everything about your 'status' huh?
Look, in the video 12 years ago, Koreans were proud of their hairstyles. A few years ago there was no "plagiarism" HanFu VS Hanbok disputes. Why don't you inherit your culture? Why change Korean costume hairstyles to look more and more like Chinese historical drama costume hairstyles and Chinese HanFu dress ?
Yes, you're right. And because the models have only short hair, they had to wear Gache I think. In the Joseon Dynasty, however, Korean women did hardly cut their hair in their lifetime. ^0^ So they could have a long and elegant hairstyle.
Well... I think both the two cases were possible. Korean women of the past did hardly cut their hair. If the hair wasn't enough, they used Gache. ^0^ Thanks for watching~ XD
Yeah~ they used Korean traditional wig, Gache. But, in the past, some Korean women could make these hairstyles not using Gache, because they did never cut their hair in their lifetime~ :)
Would someone like to explain me why long hair was this important in the past of the Korean history? I didn’t find any writing about it. Yes it’s beautiful but does it symbolise something special?
Because in Korea, my body was a gift from my parents. So It was most important to keep it precious. So, they didnt even cut their hair. It was also related to Confucianism :) FYI, in the past, if their parents is dead, they had to stay and live around the tomb for 3 years. It was their convention and duty.
All that hair plus head gear... They were really strong back in the day, hair is heavy when it long and can give you horrible neck pain and headaches. But they so beautiful, I love the Kisengs hair styles, they really dressed to impressed.
Ah, you mean the Daeng-gi(the red braid), Jjok(the bun), and Binyeo(the stick)? If you want to try it, I'll find some information for you. :) Thanks for watching~ XD
OMG!!! haha :) Sorry for my misunderstanding... hehe :) Well... I learned Korean recent and contemporary history in my highschool, but I don't know well because I didn't select it as my college entrance exam subject... T-T(I prefer Korean whole history...) So please teach me whenever I don't know well~ hehe :) Thanks for your kind comment~ ^0^
Well kjkj927 I'm a patriot to my country America, I know Korean history very well because I've studied Far East Asian History back in college. I love the Korean culture the most, and respect the Korean people the most in asia! Mr. Kim Gu should be taught in the high school level here, but the don't unless you take Korean classes in certain high schools. He is very inspiring individual who was ahead of his time!
I always adore the hairstyle they do at the Jewel in the Palace. And I thought ancient Korean women would actually grow longer hair like Rapunzel so that they could make that hairstyle without using wigs. Because haircuts are a scarcity for women back then.
Nice video. I just want to ask are those illustrations and updo based on real artefacts such as statues or ancient paintings or are they loosely recreated? Are they historically accurate or are they more to the artistic side without being historically very accurate?
5:07 - You're right! I love the drama and the title music~ ^0^ 5:37 - Yeah~ The accessories are so various! Especially, I like the phoenix-shaped chiregeoris located in the two extremes~ ^0^ 7:34 - Well... you mean the two black binyeos? T-T I don't understand because I don't remember the original Goong... T-T sorry... Ah, really? I wanna see the Tteoguji meori~ ^0^
+kjkj927 There were records, but it's not included. There are painted pictures from Goryeo. The only Queen portrait drawn by a King was done during Goryeo. And United Shilla also has cave paintings, etc.
Yoonmi Kim I understand what you mean. Gorye people's hairstyles are known to some extent thanks to buddhist paintings... but for some reason, Korea Culturecontents didn't make any for Goryeo. (Maybe I guess they couldn't decide on some representative Goryeo hairstyles among the various ones?) And about Unified Shilla, well... I never heard of any paintings from that age... the only thing I know is that Unified Shilla was heavily influenced by Chinese Tang culture, and that's why drama characters of Unified Shilla period wear a wide variety of hairstyles (there aren't any representative styles like Goguryeo's Hwangyesik Meori)
No wonder noble women needed like 10 servants to get them dressed every morning.
In the past, Korean women did hardly cut their hair. So it was possible to make these hair styles. If the hair wasn't enough, Korean women used Gache, Korean traditional wig. ^0^
Thanks for watching~ XD
Why do in ancient Korea, women would have to wear wig specially the big ones? I don't think it looks comfortable for them.
Really a work of art. 👏

I have always wondered how they did the styles I saw in period dramas. Now I know.
Margie Gold Thanks for watching! :)
It's amazing to see the process of how traditional Korean hairstyles were put together!❤❤❤❤🇰🇷🇰🇷🇰🇷

Your hairstyle still does communicate gender, mood, culture, age, culture, and marital status.

Where is Goryeo and Unified Shilla? It goes from the Three Kingdoms (technically four) to the Joseon Era...
Yoonmi Kim Probably because there aren't enough historical records about Unified Shilla and Goryeo women's hairstyle...
