Recreating Ukiyo-e Hairstyles

- They were the beautiful people of Edo-period Japan, the courtesans, geisha, and actors depicted in the ukiyo-e paintings of the 17th through 19th century. The world they moved in, the “floating world” (ukiyo), was all about glamour, sophistication, and style. The fashions they wore reflected not only class and occupation but also trends and individual taste, all of which were focused on the attempt to create an ideal picture of beauty. It’s no accident that the artists represented in "Painting the Floating World: Ukiyo-e Masterpieces from the Weston Collection" applied their skills to capturing every beautiful aspect.
Though the overall look of each individual bijin (beauty) was created by the combination of cosmetics, clothing, and hairstyle, the video below focuses on the complicated process and elaborate result of hairstyling. Filmed in a shrine in near Kyoto, the 90-year-old Minami Tomiko, one of the few living masters of the art, recreates three intricate hairstyles:
Kamome tabo or seagull’s tail, Tōrōbin or lantern locks, and Yoko hyōgo or butterfly
As one of a few living yūsoku hairstylists, Tomiko Minami has the special skills needed to create traditional and historical Japanese hairstyles. Though it requires long years of training for someone to become a successor, she is passing some of her skills along to the next generation.
Minami’s grandmother opened a hair salon in Kyoto during the Meiji era (1868-1912). Located in Gion, an old entertainment district, customers of this salon ranged from maiko (young dancers) to women from the upper class. Minami developed her skills over 30 years, training herself while she helped her mother. It wasn’t until she was in her fifties that she created a traditional hairstyle on her own. This was also the first and only time she received a compliment from her mother, who was ill at the time. Those good words have sustained her confidence all these years.

Japan is a country that retains more traditional culture than other countries. In Japan, everything from sword making to crafts and festivals has been handed down beautifully. If you worry about tradition, it's the West or your country

No lie, this reminds me of what I went through in the 90's at the beauty salon! Only it was black gel & hair spray (finger waves etc)but very similar styling techniques. Had to sleep sitting up lol. Fascinating!!!👌🏽

I have watched a few Chinese videos on Tang hairstyles and I have noticed the anachronistic presence of bobby pins. What Janet Stephens in her recreation of historical western hair styles makes clear is that they didn't often use pins (muchless modern bobby pins) but instead sewed the hair. I noticed in this video, the elderly ornatrix used a lot more ties than pins (as well as the hair ornaments), which seems similar to the western technique

I never really understood the appeal or the beauty of these hairstyles until I actually saw them demonstrated here. I'm familiar with them (especially the lantern lock style) from books where they're described but seeing them IRL is another thing entirely. It really is an art form to be able to transform hair like that. I hope the younger generation is paying attention to what this master is doing!

I’ve always been fascinated by the hair ornamentation/ use of Kanzashi to achieve these hairstyles. I’m absolutely shocked to realize that rather than serving as actual function - theyre merely decor and in-a-sense “faked”. You can see the decorative combs and pins not being used to secure the hair at all. But rather, the hair is secured tightly with string, which is then hidden by hair extensions IN ORDER to support/secure the combs and pins. My mind is blown. 🤯🤯🤯 It was the complete opposite of what I thought! @1:10, @3:07, and @4:23

もしモデルさんが髪をすってなかったら、きっともっとカチッと完璧になってたかも。今の人は髪をすくから時代ものの髪型をしても少し髪の毛が散ってしまう気がする。
このお婆さんが亡くなった後もこう言う髪型ができる人がいて欲しいな。と言っても自分自身は伝統を残すために何かできてるわけではないけれど、まずは伝統を好きになって興味持つ事が重要かな。

They are the tools which the used to use; hair oils, hair sticks, hair rats (moulds) and fake hair extensions have been around for ever.

Did ladies use to have extensions too or were they able to create these hairstyles with just hair on their heads?
I’m sure extensions did exist but mainly in china. As you can see in this video they stuff under the hair with clumps of hair to make it look thicker

no ... they have used hair extensions or wigs since the Heian era (it's called "Kamoji" ,as I know Sei Shonagon a famous Japanese poet used it ).... that means they have used fake hair since 1200 years ago
but, people who have long with a lot of hair volume .. can use their own hair for the entire process

technically all of these hairstyle were worn by courtesans at some point, just a slightly decorated version of the first ones.

No, Girls in town did these hairstyles too These hairstyles were done by samurai families and all women in general according to fashion. Some things started to become popular from courtesan, but not all
PRETTY SURE that the hair model is Tsunemomo, a real geisha. or Geiko (in Kyoto dialect) pretty signature eyebrow and cheek mole. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

these hairstyles were commonly worn by prostitutes. I actually read a long time somewhere in japanese website that has english infos that the seagull tail hairstyle(there are different variations) was so popular with prostitutes and female hostesses that regular women stopped wearing it. I feel sorry for the model that has to do all these hairstyles in one session. not only painful but damaging to the scalps.
