It is my understanding from reading many Bach biographies, that J.S. did definitely play the lute well enough to teach it and he did so for awhile when he first started working at one of his jobs, but he soon paid someone to teach it for him. He kept up his playing ability because he had a long and wonderful friendship with Leopold Weiss, the premiere lutenist of the time. Weiss visited Bach and stayed as a guest, during which Bach would play his latest lute suite for Leopold, who would answer with his latest. It was one of Bach's deepest and most satisfying friendships. The idea that the incomparable Chaconne is a tombeau to Barbara to denote her passing is a new idea to me that seems definitely probable. Not because it is in a minor key but because he had SO MUCH to say!
