Nicely shared and something I brought up a few streams ago! Just to add for anyone who is interested how it differs from every aircraft in Europe at least.. In the 737 we measure the “minimum eye height over threshold (MEHT) at 50ft. Worth mentioning this is a little lower than the MEHT for the wide-bodies (Eg 70ft in a 747). Usually find in the 737 the ILS and Glide path diverge below 300ft at the large international airport suited for aircraft with high MEHT’s. (3/4 reds if you follow the ILS to threshold) When the MEHT is over 65ft on the chart that’s great for the guys that sit 15ft above where we are sat and the aiming point is 400 meters from the threshold! We just discuss it as a threat and don’t chase the PAPI below 200ft. 😎 FD2S
I have to tell you that you have natural talent for explaining stuff clearly and easy. When other people are trying to teach sometimes I have to listen twice or more to grab the essence. Thanks a lot, you did mention other set of lights VASI, maybe you are planning another video.
Voytek CYVR thank you ! I do enjoy teaching, and as far as the VASI goes yes, I was going to explain some differences with a 3 bar vasi system. However I can not locate any 3 bar VASI airports lol so if you can find one for me let me know! I have some good information on that particular set of VGSI lights 👍
Thanks for the excellent information, learned quite a bit about this system. I didn’t realize there was so much to that. I really got a lot out of the approach chart explanation.
And not to forget X-Plane has the distance and size between touchdown markers fixed compared to real world where they often vary between airports. Some scenery designers use satellite images as reference to place PAPIs, some will place them according to how touchdown zone marker appears in xplane, while some top notch designers will design the entire runway themselves and that's where your video nailed it.
Another solid confirmation as to why this channel is so much more than a come-fly-with-me proposition. So it happens there is a conspiracy theory on another popular sim channel that the X Plane 11 PAPI are wrong. This comes to show you that not all online simming streamers were created equal. There is them and then there is V1: real pilot, real knowledge, real passion. As always, thank you for sharing the knowledge and your passion. Finally, who the hell is the one person who disliked this?
I listen to EGLL most mornings (I'm in the UK btw) and I've now noticed that no arrivals are cleared to use the microwave approach which, I understand, is a more accurate procedure. I wonder why that is? Landing aircraft with that ability were always called on to "continue with the micro"
Hi V1, awesome video as ever. I have been flight simming since the days of the sinclair spectrum and have learned more from your videos than I have done in the rest of my life. There are other channels that are OK but you can't beat learning from someone who does this for a living. One question though in relation to the above video. If you were the captain of a 747-400 at about 250ft long, weighing 650,000lbs, landing at 160 knots would you really notice the 18ft difference between the glideslope and PAPIs (66ft against 48ft)? Is instrument flying/landing really that accurate? I could understand if you were flying a cessna 172 (or similar!) OK that was sort of 2 questions :-) Keep up the great work
Flying XP11 in the US. What are some airport codes that have VASI or PAPI ? I would like to practice my landings and glide slope lights would help. Tx :^)
Great presentation skills! Love your passion for the flightsim community! There are people who tell you that sims can't compare to RL. I fly small GA aircraft in RL and I think a well modelled sim-aircraft can very well compare, if you operate it the way it should be. Sure you can slam a Cessna on the runway with 140kts in the sim without much drama... but it's your own responsibility if you want to practise seriously.

Thanks for the info FD2S!
Excellent video Captain!
Top quality stuff...👍👍👍.
Keep it up Captain.

@@V1Sim KEYW has VASI lights, I am not sure what 3 bar is but maybe that helps. I always drop everything to watch your videos and streams.
Thanks for the excellent information, learned quite a bit about this system. I didn’t realize there was so much to that. I really got a lot out of the approach chart explanation.
Part of my job when on shift at Heathrow is to check they work.
Neil Martin that’s cool!

I learn more from this channel than I do ground school😂😂 thank u for the quality content
A textbook video! Thank you very much, Sir! I really wonder who disliked it!

Great video. Thanks for making the time to create this!
Thanks for the amazing explanation V1!!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and being such a nice teacher
Thanks you sir! I'm in the aviation sim business and just had a very long discusssion about this very topic.
This is some amazing information...we need to get you some more subscribers Captain. Thanks again.
Awesome explanation!

When it says large aircraft, does this mean heavy or higher, or just medium like the A320?
Cool I always wondered. Thank you
