- How Sweet to be an Idiot from ‘The Innes Book of Records’.
Original broadcast date: 17th January 1979.
“As harmless as a cloud”
A song featured on Neil’s first solo album written during his time with the band GRIMMS. ‘How Sweet to be an Idiot’ was filmed at the “Little England” Model Town in Minehead (sadly no longer in existence) and at the Bristol Zoo.
Not gonna lie: I'm free to be whatever I brought me here
Same... Down the rabbit hole together
Innes was a true genius and a humble man. It is a shame he never got much credit for his talent.
Musical genius where parody actually becomes an art form in itself: and surely one of the most inventive videos ever, well before Gabriel etc, in the 90s...this is from around 1978 if I remember correctly, caught the whole series on BBC, a one-off, never equalled.
Who wants to live forever?
How Sweet It Is To Be An Idiot vs Oasis' "Whatever"......
Sounds a lot, to me, like solo McCartney and Lennon as well... Could almost be a Rutle tune
It sounds like Oasis’ ‘I’m free-ee to be whatever I ...’
@@originalindiechick7999 Neil took them to court over that and now has a songwriting credit
I was thinking Elton. He's parodied him, too, with "Godfrey Daniel."
@@TheIgnatzz Watching this again, I think you're right. The outfit is very Elton-esque haha
Thank you for uploading this! I was looking for good quality version for a very long time!
Really is a beautiful song
Briliant work. Mr. Innis will be remembered.
Especially through Oasis' "Whatever".......
I would dedicate this to Chance The Gardener.
Love the brief Sesame Street theme piano halfway through.
A little more reverb and this would have fit well on the plastic ono album.
Thanks to "The Innes Book of Records" via Facebook and Neil, of course
I met Graham Chapman in his last days but I would've loved to have met Innes.
how was the encounter with Graham? where it was and what did he said? would love to hear about it.
Innes was obviously a bitter greedy little man to take this to court!
Crazy. Oasis made millions, Innes got 20 percent which was only fair. Gallagher is a well known plagarist.
He sounds like Harry Nilsson to me on this one.
Fantastic.
Thank you for uploading this - a gem
So well done.
Yeah. OK, which bit exactly sounds like Whatever?
The first line is the same melody ;)
So about 8 notes then. I highly doubt Noel ever heard the song. He doesn’t strike me as an Innes fan. Maybe he liked watching Puddle Lane.
@@neilhampson As a huge Beatles fan he was probably well aware of Neil Innes. I very much doubt he hasn't seen The Rutles for example. Anyhoo, the result is that Innes got a writing credit for Whatever. (It's not just the melody but it's the melody right at the start of each song and has the same chords under it.)
@@Pixietoriabecause no one ever used G G/F# Em before Neil Innes. I think it’s a ridiculous state of affairs when artists think they can poach someone else’s success because they wrote something similar twenty years before. If someone rich did it to someone poor there would be outrage. It’s just another example of the modern victim/victimiser narrative. I don’t blame Innes by the way. He’s just trying to feed his family. I blame the judge who passed it. Probably never written a note of music in his life.
@@neilhampson It's really not ridiculous. That phrase is identical. Some copyright disputes are a bit "hmm, you sure?" but this one is pretty clear cut. You can think it's a coincidence, but even Oasis have fully admitted they've stolen a lot of musical ideas. This one is hilarious to try to defend - especially since it was settled - but I can see you're angry about it. (Innes is dead by the way.)

RIP Neil Innes - a genius on his own. Deserved better than to be a parody artist... This is such a beautiful song!!!

The beginning of the verse melody is definitely the same as "Whatever" but the rest is completely different.
No legal infringement to my ears, just a happy little coincidence. A sweet, melancholy song regardless.
Innes received co-writing credit on the Oasis song after a legal dispute.
Oasis had MANY happy coincidences throughout their career then 😂. Not hating on them though. I love their music, but they really take many obvious direct inspirations on other artist. For example, She's electric chorus's is similar to the While my guitar gently weeps, and the outro is the exact same as With a little help from my friends. Don't look back in anger (one of my all time favorites) first piano chords are a simplify version of Imagine. And I can keep citing more examples like that. There's nothing wrong with what they do, in my opinion. But to say that those are coincidence is to be a little naive.
@@jorgecarrera8806 About 10 years ago at a Sunday Musical Event at "The Bandstand" on Southsea Seafront Portsmouth ... Some bloke with a guitar had "the girls in the audience" singing along with an "Oasis Song", at the same time as "the boys in the audience were singing along to a Beatles song which fitted harmoniously over the top ... A bit like you can sing a "round" with Frere Jacques. I can't remember which of the Oasis songs he was playing over the top of, or which Beatles song, but it was pretty much the same chords and fitted perfectly. I think that musically and lyrically Neil Innes was a genius, which is not a term I would apply to either "Noel" or "Liam" Gallagher. I feel a bit ashamed as a Mancunian to hear Neil Innes mentioned in the same sentence as those two arrogant tw*ts. Ok they were extremely popular and sold far more records than Neil Innes ... But as far as talent is concerned ... The Gallagher brothers are a couple of painters and decorators from Droylsden, which would have made more of a contribution to music had they remained in their original jobs. It's hard to reject your own bluster when your own bluster is your only unique selling point. Meh!
I miss that Britain so much it's unreal! 🥹
1970s Britain?
Nada que ver con Oasis no sean mamones
Thanks a million for the Neil Innes playlist. Awesome!! Perhaps you would add the Rutles later on? Plenty of NI nuggets!! This is just one of them, but imo the best:
