Sorry for the mistake about Poland, the correct translation is Pologne… I guess my brain just got tired after filming so many country names, haven’t been speaking French in a while too, totally my fault 😅

I think you had Holland in mind which if translated is «Hollande» or «Pays-Bas».

It’s not the same because Holland is only 2 provinces (North Holland and South Holland) in the Netherlands (they are 12 in total). Like England and the UK (sorry I did Dutch Studies and my teachers were like “you have to explain the difference”) 😂

Vietnam's way of naming countries in Europe is quite complicated. Due to historical factors.
First we use different phonetic transcriptions for Chinese characters. Like some words in Europe and each country has a slightly different pronunciation. At first we used Chinese documents to know about Western countries, and we ourselves took notes in Chinese characters. Therefore, some country names have been transliterated into Vietnamese after being transliterated into Chinese. For example, France is read by the Chinese as "Fa Ran Xi" and written as 法兰西, but we read the word 法兰西 as Phap Lan Tay and shorten it as "Phap". Similar to England (Ang Land - Eng Country), Germany (Deutschland - Duc Country), Italia ("I Ta Lia" in Chinese and "Y Dai Loi" in Vietnamese) Quoc 国 /Nuoc means country.
Some of us borrowed some French words to say the names of countries, for example Ê Cốt (Ecosse),...
Some are named by us based on our geographical location with our country, for example Nam Dương (South Ocean) means Indonesia because they are located on the south coast of Vietnam. Or the US we call Hoa Kỳ 華旗 (Flowers Flag - Because in Vietnam people look at the stars on the American flag and think they are flowers, because East Asians think that a star is round and not five-pointed like the West).

I'm learning Vietnamese, and when I was learning vocabulary for countries, I was very confused by 'nước Ý'. The word 'Ý' also means idea so I thought that Italy was 'the country of ideas' 🤣

The fact that people often groups Vietnam in a group with other South East Asia countries due to its geographic location. But as a Vietnamese, I believe that you will never see any similar between VN and Thailand, Malaysia or Indonesia about language or culture.
If you group Vietnam + China + Korea + Japan in one show, then you will realize there are the similar countries' name pronunciation.
i.e. -England (Vietnamese: Nước Anh/Anh Quốc - Chinese: 英国(Ying Guo) - Korean: 영국(Yeong Kuk) - Japanese: 英国(Ing Koku)). 'Anh' is shorten from 'Anh-Cách-Lan' 英格蘭(Ying Ge Lan) in Chinese;
-America (Vietnamese: Nước Mỹ/Mỹ Quốc - Chinese: 美国(Mei Guo) - Korean: 미국(Mi Kuk) - Japanese: 米国(Bei Koku)). 'Mỹ' is shorten from 'A-Mỹ-Lợi-Gia' 亚美利加(Ya Mei Li Jia) in Chinese;
-South Korea (Vietnamese: Hàn Quốc - Chinese: 韩国(Han Guo) - Korean: 한국(Han Kuk) - Japanese: 韓国(Kan Koku));
-China (Vietnamese: Trung Quốc - Chinese: 中国(Zhong Guo) - Korean: 중국(Jung Kuk) - Japanese: 中国(Chu Koku));
-Japan (Vietnamese: Nhật Bản - Chinese: 日本(Ri Ben) - Korean: 일본(Il Bon) - Japanese: 日本(Ni Hon)); in this case 'Nhật'=Sun, 'Bản'=Origin ('Nhật Bản' = Origin of the Sun);
-North Korea (Vietnamese: Bắc Triều Tiên - Chinese: 北朝鲜(Bei Chao Xian) - Korean: 북조선(Buk Jo Seon) - Japanese: 北朝鮮(Kita Cho Sen));
They are sharing Sinosphere culture, so many words are origin from Chinese. More than 50% of Vietnamese words are lending from Chinese (Sino-Vietnamese words), it's same like Korean or Japanese.
As a Thai, I once took my Vietnamese friends to a restaurant and learnt that our words for squid and ink are pretty much the same.

However, what I want to mention here is not a few isolated examples. Vietnamese has a systematic acquisition of Chinese writing and language for about ~2200 years. Today, about ~50% of the words in Vietnamese are borrowed from Chinese. It's not just a few words alone, it's a whole system of language and culture transferring.

As a talking tree, I want to say that we do have a lot of ways to name countries
For example, England is just "Anh", but United Kingdom is "Vương quốc Anh" and Great Britain of United Kingdom and Northern Ireland is "Vương quốc Liên hiệp Anh và Bắc Ai-len"
France is just "Pháp" or "Cộng hoà Pháp" (French Republic) but in some old document, France is called "Phú Lang Sa", "Pha Lang Sa", "Phú Lãng Sa", "Pháp Lang Sa" or "Pháp Lan Tây"
Vietnam is "Việt Nam", or the full name is "Cộng hoà Xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam" (Socialist Republic of Vietnam)
Thailand is "Thái Lan", "Vương quốc Thái Lan (Kingdom of Thailand) and the shorter name is just "Thái"
The informal name of the USA is just "Mỹ", but in formal cases, USA is "Hoa Kỳ" or "Hợp chúng quốc Hoa Kỳ"
Japan is "Nhật Bản" or the simpler name is "Nhật"
Italy is "Ý", just a single word from the shorten name "Ý Đại Lợi"
And the last one, Poland is "Ba Lan"
Quick correction in French "Poland" is Pologne, not Poland.

It's like that, but the word "Yipun" we derived from South Chinese dialect "Yit Pun" , Yit means the sun and Pun means もと, floor, origin or somethings
The word "Ý" (Italy) is actually can be converted to Chinese character "意".
The original word for it is "意大利", which means Italy, and is pronounced /yì dà lì/ in Chinese.
Therefore, Ý means Italy in Vietnamese. FYI.

His little rule of when a word ends with "land" in english, you add an "e" in french just doesn't work at all. Off the top of my head, there's one name they already covered in this video :
EngLAND --> Angleterre, not Englande
There's also SwitzerLAND --> Suisse, not Switzerlande nor Suisselande
The NetherLANDs --> Pays-Bas, not Netherlandes
EngLand -> AngleTerre :)
That's because land is Germanic while terre is Latinate.

Hello I’m Thai, in my opinion Thai girl in this video misunderstood in some word. Actually Thai language is so difficult, many Thai people themselves also agree at this point. Especially, the advanced and formal Thai words, many people used them wrong. That Thai girl said “united kingdom” in Thai is “อังกฤษ”(Un-grid), it is totally incorrect because “อังกฤษ” means only England or English. But the united kingdom in Thai language, the correct answer is สหราชอาณาจักร (Sa-ha-raj-cha-ar-na-chak).

In Thailand, the UK is officially called 'Sa ha rad cha a na jak', but it is called 'Pra ted Ang grid' in general because a lot of Thai people considered the UK as England, or the origin of the English language, which we also call 'Pa sa Ang grid'.

As a language from Latin , country names in french are similar to other Latin ones , but some differences in pronunciation , one of the most unique is exactly Royaume-Uni 😅
This is probably because UK is composed from two common nouns, "united" and "kingdom", which get translated to their equivalent in other languages and then recomposed together.
In french, "royaume" directly translates to "kingdom" and "uni" to "united".

You should bring on a Cambodian speaker with Thai and French, because then you'll notice how they're all connected through history and colonialism. For example, in Khmer, we say: Prateis A'merique (America) or Saha Rot A'merique (United States of America), Chakphop Angklais (United Kingdom), Earlong (Ireland), Allemung (Germany) - basically name of countries are borrowed from French, while a lot of other words for kingdoms and states are Pali/Sanskrit words (similar to Thai and Lao).

Poland is Pologne in French. not every country ending in land in English ends in lande in French. Anyway "lande" is a Gemanic loan wors with a specific meaning and is very much a regional word rom Northern France (the most Germanic part)

3:33 Here is a better explanation for including the word "nước" or not:
For countries like England (Anh), France (Pháp), Germany (Đức), Italy (Ý), etc. whose names are short in Vietnamese and, more importantly, are common words in Vietnamese, it can make confusion if the word "nước" is not included (in some cases). For example, "Ý" in Vietnamese means "meaning"/"opinion"/"purpose"/... and also means Italy; "Anh" (often) means "older brother" or male person around the age of older sibling, and also means England. Therefore, if the context is not clear enough, the word "nước" is added; if the context is clear enough, it's completely fine to skip the word "nước", but it's also formal to add the word "nước" (even though it's redundant). In case of "Việt Nam" and "Nhật Bản" (Japan), it's the same idea applied in reverse; when the context is clear enough, those names are shortened to "Việt" and "Nhật". By the way, for the country names mentioned above, in most cases the context is clear enough. For "Úc" (Australia), it's not a common word so in most (if not all) cases, Vietnamese can understand that without the word "nước".
By the way, if you notice how Vietnamese people refer to eachother's name, you may notice people whose names end with "Anh", or people with similar names (in the same group), often get referred with an additional word from their name, to avoid confusion.
For example:
A group of friends consists of 6 people, whose full names are:
Nguyễn Mai Anh,
Trần Thị Liên,
Lê Ngọc Linh,
Phạm Khánh Linh,
Hoàng Thị Mai,
Vũ Thị Mai.
They would call eachother as:
Mai Anh (because "Anh" is a common word),
Liên (only one "Liên" here),
Ngọc Linh or Linh Lê (to distinguish the 2 Linh),
Khánh Linh or Linh Phạm (same reason as above),
Mai Hoàng (to distinguish the 2 Thị Mai),
Mai Vũ (same reason as above).
In general, Vietnamese often use just enough words to distinguish the related names/concepts/... (unless the redundancy is necessary for formality).

The word anh(英) in anh quốc (English) is han word and different to the word anh( pure vn word) mean brother just similar pronun but different word meaning..we called it" đồng âm khác nghĩa"

@@alexandermorel2122 ça vient de l'habitude de parler anglais y a pas de problème là dessus, c'était juste pour le signaler si des gens étaient intéressés dans l'apprentissage du français (et puis ton explication était sensé, on utilise "lande" pour la Finlande, Groenland , ou Hollande par exemple) pas évident le Switch de language des fois. Mais tout a ton honneur de t'excuser là dessus , t'avais vraiment pas d'obligation haha

The Thailand girl sounds like Korean. The pronunciations of her for many countries are the same as Japanese language, for example: amerika (US), nibon (Japan), hulansu (France).
I like your page contents but I think you should find a better font that can accommodate languages in your videos.
In Vietnamese and Chinese we call the US "nước Mỹ" or "Meiguo" which mean beautiful country. I wonder if this has anything to do with the American dream 🤔

Also it’s good to know that the Chinese translation was mostly phonetic conversion straight from original language, rather than English that’s why some of them sounds very different than English. I think España > 西班牙 > Tây Ban Nha is quite clever and Spanish "ñ" is similar to Vietnamese "nh" and Spain is located in the West, hence Tây.

There are some words in Vietnamese that you can put before the name, and the meaning is almost the same (just more informations, and more formal).
Those are: Đất nước (earth and water - country), nước (water - country), vương quốc (kingdom).
So there may go: Vương quốc Anh (UK), Nước Pháp (French), Đất nước Thái Lan (Thailand),...
Fun fact. Why the US come so much shorter in Vietnamese? Because we Vietnamese people first heard about the US from Chinese people. They call the US: mei gua (beautiful country). In vietnamese mei = Mỹ = Đẹp (beautiful). Another name of the US is Hoa Kỳ - this mean the flag of flowers (We people see the US flag and think that the stars on it are flowers).

Actually for thai we call UK as "สหราชอนาจักร" (Sa-ha-rach-a-na-jak in case anyone wondering how to say that) which is basically United Kingdom in Thai, is this video they simply use the thai version of English, so not accurate.
There are actually a few ways to say the UK or England in Vietnamese. The full name of "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" is either "Vương quốc Liên hiệp Anh và Bắc Ireland" or "Liên hiệp Vương quốc Anh và Bắc Ireland". It can also just be called "Anh Quốc", "Vương quốc Anh" or simply "Anh". The US can also be called "Hoa Kỳ" which was an old term meaning the Star-spangled banner but evolved to mean the country. An alternate reading of Japan is "Nhật Bổn". Most of these names came from Sino-Vietnamese readings.
Also add that the full name of the US in Vietnamese is " Hợp Chủng Quốc Hoa Kỳ" or Hoa kỳ for short, it the more formal way to call the US, Mỹ just mean America.

Well the Chinese did rule over Vietnam for like 1,000 years. There are a lot of borrowed words from Cantonese and there a lot of Vietnamese people who speak Cantonese as well.

England: Anh Cát Lợi, Anh Quốc, or nước Anh in common speech
France: Phú Lang Sa (similar to Pharang), Pháp Quốc, and then nước Pháp
USA: we never call it US or USA, the correct term is Hoa Kỳ, hợp chủng quốc Hoa Kỳ, Huê Kỳ (old name), Mỹ Quốc, nước Mỹ… The word “Mỹ” is actually Chinese like Mei Guo in Mandarin or Mee Kwok in Cantonese
