Agreed, great movie. One of my all time favorites. No car crashes or explosions or special effects - just a great film about a complex man. An unbelievable performance by Robert Duvall.
I'm an atheist (i guess? I deny the existence of a God but do have a complex relationship with spirituality) and this film is so powerful to me. Its about redemption, and that's something we all grapple with at some point in our lives. Its also a beautiful film about family not joined by blood.
@flightofthebumblebee9529 or Shane Vendrell from The Shield, or the crazy Texas cowboy from Shanghai Noon, the computer tech from Bourne Identity, Billy from Django He was great in Seal Team 6 as the leader who is kidnapped then killed after rescued.
There really aren't words enough to express how brilliant Duvall's performance was in this movie. I grew up around preachers like Sonny.. saw the love for humanity.. but the disconnect from humanity as well. Troubled, restless souls... looking for a place of rest and acceptance. Jimmy Swaggart suffered from the same condition. All he knew, or had to offer.. all that validated him... was his life 'on stage'. And even when he 'fell' ... he still couldn't see the handwriting on the wall and continued the performance. Duvall has Completely nailed it on this one.
Without a doubt this is in my top ten films of all time. I don't think it quite hits number one, but it's definitely in the top ten. Robert Duvall gives the best performance I have ever seen an actor do though, no doubt. This last twenty minutes or so in particular is so moving for me. It does bring tears to my eyes. I've watched this film probably five or six times now, and I fully expect to watch it another 10 times before I "fly away".
GodsFavoriteBassPlyr Couldn't agree more!! I think Duvall really put his heart and soul in this entire project!! (What makes it all the more remarkable is that I don't believe Robert Duvall has gone on record as ever having been a member of a charismatic religion---you would never know it by his performance--he's absolutely mesmerizing!!)
Swaggart was a great preacher and singer. I believe he loved the Lord but he was flawed like us all. Not many pastors like him are left today. He asked God to forgive him on national tv; now we must do the same as God did for we are sinners too.
That lineup of Best Actor Oscar nominees, that year… WOW!! Robert Duvall, Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman, Peter Fonda AND, as the baby of the group, Matt Damon…
I. Got saved and received the Holy Ghost at age 7 . Praise Jesus. Never perfect. Received FREE Gift of salvation. OUR LORD NEVER LEAVES US. IT IS US WHO LEAVES HIM...Come home yee who are weary,Come home. Earnestly tenderly Jesus is calling. Calling all sinners, Come Home!!!
I'm not "religious" much either but this film truly spoke to me and this ending where he surrenders to the cops had me sobbing like Walton Goggins was. Truly. When EF's voice breaks as he says "I have to leave ya now" it had my eyes watery.
It's a true testament to Robert Duvall and his own faith that he wrote, directed, stars in, and financed this film with 5 million of his own money. I believe God called upon him to do it.
Amazing. The man who pastored me was a flawed human being who fell from grace very badly. Yet he gave me a place to work out my salvation and solidify my life in Jesus. God uses broken vessels. ♡
The black woman in the white dress beginning at 0:19 is gripped by a righteous frenzy inspired by the Holy Spirit. Her Power Dance is an awesome thing to behold!
There are two scenes missing that I especially like. The first is the one where he reveals to a friend that he was previously involved with stock car racing. Then he revs up his Lincoln and drops it into gear and it goes straight into the river and sinks. The second is in the church service at the end of the movie where he illustrates God's love in the most stark and eternal manner. He holds up a baby and says "I love you all with my heart and soul....but I don't love you enough to drive nails into this precious child's hands and feet ...but GOD DOES! GOD DOES!
The preacher was flawed, but his heart was unflinching for Jesus. Hollywood recorded three personal salvation experiences in this film. I have never seen that. Only goes to prove that there is that empty spot in our constitution only to be filled by the love and the person of Jesus. See the movie in its entirety. Billy Bob Thornton bows down to the majesty of God's Son and the Word of Life
That's what was so wonderful about this film, and in particular Duvall's performance. The Apostle E.F. was a complex man, full of contradictions, and Duvall nailed the role. Yes, he was a sinner - a womanizer with a violent temper. But even with all his flaws and weaknesses, you never doubted for a moment his faith or his love of God.
My favorite scene is when Sonny addresses that very issue, when he's yelling at God. "I'm a sinner, and once in a while a womanizer, but I'm your servant! I always called you Jesus, you always called me Sonny!" Gives me goosebumps.
When I first saw this film I thought Sonny was going to throw a beating on Billy Bob again when he came back with the bulldozer, but instead he prays for him and embraces him and tells him he would do anything for him and that he loves him. Amazing film. I truly believe God called upon Robert Duvall to make this film.
It is indeed an unbelievably great performance by Robert Duvall and the movie is one of the greatest I saw. It reflects on the story of Jacob and Esau. Jacob was much like Sonny, he always got what he wanted but didn't always use the right ways to get those things. Like it says in the book he basically stole the birthright from much more passive Jacob. Even though he didn't use the right way to accomplish what he intended god worked thru him and he did many great things. Of course he did face the consequences for his unlawful ways of doing things such as Sonny did in the movie. This movie shows how god works with what he has and even though we are unperfect and tend to commit same sins all over again he uses us to call others for his kingdom. Indeed a great great movie!
One of the best movies ever made, a refreshing change to see Pentecostals portraid as they are not like the caustic Jesuit miss info that is always portraid in Hollywood.
Just a great movie. I need to Rent It on prime tonight. It's worth a few dollars. Spend a while since I've seen it. Robert Duvall directed and wrote this as well.

this movie and leap of faith with Steve Martin have been ridiculed by Christians in Southern Baptist. all I can say is they must not be Christians because these two movies have the most realistic christian themes and overcoming themes ever. more than the ten commandment movie with Mr Heston.
He assaulted the guy his wife cheated on him with. The guy went into a coma and ended up dying, so he was charged with 1st degree murder. Check out the movie sometime. It’s excellent
I hear you. But, this movie shows us how when God has his hands on you, no man or woman can take away the peace of God or his purpose for our lives. Much love to you brother. Amen, amen.
Sonny never prayed to "not get busted". He knew he killed a man in a fit of rage and was ready to own it when he had to, but he had some work to do before he went away. Then the credits scene has him on a chain gang, ministering to a very eager group of other criminals. God put the man where he needed him most. Truly an amazing film even if you lack Faith.
I was about to cry watching the scene... One of the best movies i've ever watched.
I did cry in 1998 when i saw it at 14 years old. 1st time admitting it. ; )

He deserved an Oscar for that performance.

Walton Goggin's best performance,I think he was as good as Duvall
At the end of the movie Robert Duvall character is on prison chain gang. He still leading the inmates on a cadence for Jesus. That’s powerful
This movie is so underrated but it's one of the best ones. Robert Duvall did such a good job.
This film was written by, directed by, financed by, and stars Robert Duvall. God led him to make this film. Truly.
Amazing film. I am grateful for it.
Cop driving Apostle EF to jail was Saved before ride's end. Guaranteed.

@flightofthebumblebee9529 or Shane Vendrell from The Shield, or the crazy Texas cowboy from Shanghai Noon, the computer tech from Bourne Identity, Billy from Django
He was great in Seal Team 6 as the leader who is kidnapped then killed after rescued.
Bobby Duvall has been snubbed TO MANY TIMES.
He is unquestionably the best actor alive today and quite possibly the best ever.
Reverend Blackwell told him that he believed “God places us where He needs us.” Notice how he went to prison, where he converted the chain gang.
He also likely saved the cop who took him into custody.
I tell you what--the older I get the more I know that statement is 100% truth!!

I have to go as far as saying one of the best of all time. For me at least of course.
Swaggart was a great preacher and singer. I believe he loved the Lord but he was flawed like us all. Not many pastors like him are left today. He asked God to forgive him on national tv; now we must do the same as God did for we are sinners too.
Bob not only wrote and starred in this movie he also paid to have it made.
“Get out of my way moon, get out of my way stars l know MY way to heaven.” I pray my soul is that prepared when l go to meet my Maker.
I love how he keeps talking to the cop as they take him away
That lineup of Best Actor Oscar nominees, that year… WOW!! Robert Duvall, Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman, Peter Fonda AND, as the baby of the group, Matt Damon…
Mother praised Him..she was dancing feet was hardly touching the floor lifted up in her praise!!
Definitely in my top five films of all time. Duvall is a king. So good. And the future Boyd Crowder/Chris Mannix as the young Sammy!
Don't forget Cooper howard aka the ghoul 😊
