One of the best films ever produced! I'm not Christian, but this movie is extremely meaningful. A man who had built up his own church and congregation, only to have it taken away along with his children and home by his adulterous wife and her boyfriend, let's his emotions get the better of him. Commits murder. He leaves, ends up in Louisiana, and finds a way to help people with nothing but his faith and love. Like he's finishing what he had started before the "devil" ruined his life. And before they can lock him up for life. But you're left thinking he's gonna do fine in prison and touch even more lives. The Apostle was a perfect title. It captivated me.
Wannabe Bonsai, don't forget that the reason his church and congregation were taken from him was because he himself was adulterous....and he drank. I'm agnostic, and I also found the film meaningful.
I'm not saying that Horace deserved to get a bat to the head, but when an angry drunk guy whose wife you are screwing tells you to back off, then it might be a good idea to pay attention.
Advanced Raymondology Exactly a real man will go out and get a woman of his own, not take another man’s wife. I understand that Sonny was a womanizer, and a cheater too. But 2 wrongs don’t make a right.
A powerful swat across the face and head with a baseball bat and "One for the Road!" I love that line! I think there are many of us who would love to do that to somebody we hate. The problem is, we can't get away with it! Sonny didn't.
I've known a number of preachers just like Sonny. Desperate to keep feeding the illusion that 'all is well' with the family and within relationships.. And when they can no longer keep it behind the veil... they lose it. (perhaps not as violently as in this scene, but eventually something has to give.) Duvall's performance was amazing.
John Beasley is a great actor. His acting in some of my favorite films will forever hold a special place in my heart. I’m from Omaha and I had the opportunity to meet him many years ago. He showed a genuine warmth and kindness to me and encouraged me to not stop believing in my dreams and to keep pushing on. When he passed, it was a very sad day. A great man who made the world a better place through his craft and genuine humanity.
He deserved to be stoned, him and the adulterous wife. It’s what’s paid for adultery. It’s the rightful wage for such a sin. But God is merciful, is slow to anger and has long patience not willing that anyone should parish but to come to repentance. We are to judge a situation and what is best, we will judge the angels. But, also how we judge, we will be judged. We will be shown the same mercy we displayed. According to the Torah, it is the right of the cheated spouse to expose his cheating spouse and lover to be stoned because that is just. However, let the man who has no sin throw the first stone. We all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. We all deserve a righteous punishment for our transgressions. But God has provided a way where he took on himself the punishment for the sins of everyone. So, with a debt paid, only repentance is needed, trust in the Lord Jesus the Messiah like one trusts a parachute jumping off a plane, forgive and love those who hurt us or our loved ones, die to the old sinful self and be reborn as a new creation in essence. The old self is crucified with Jesus and God can now cleanse us from all wrongdoing of the past. Therefore, though the punishment is just, we are not just. We are thieves wanting justice when another thieve steals from us. Instead, if we forgive and love our enemies. With our transgressions, we have all crucified His precious son who sacrificed himself for us. Because Jesus had no sin, he was the perfect sacrifice whose blood could pay the punishments of all people. And when we repent God forgives us, remembers no more our sins because His mercy is eternal and makes us his children and as such, princes with a crown to rule over nations of angels in the world to come. How great is His mercy! How great is our God? There’s none like Him in all the universe that could match His love and beauty. This is the Lord I serve, the Lord that redeems, though I was his enemy, He offered His own son. Though I was his enemy His son wanted to save me and gladly gave himself for me. Though O was his enemy He called me to repent. I responded and His love filled the very core of myself. He made me His own precious child. And one day I will stand before Him with clean hands because I accepted his sacrifice. Bless the Lord oh my soul!

I have to laugh at all these judgemental backward misogynistic comments about a man being deserving of violent retribution at the hands of another pig ignorant mn without even considering the woman's right to independent thought, decision and autonomy. It seems to me that the woman played brilliantly by Farah Fawcett has already told Duvall's character ( to all intents and purposes ex husband, they're already living separately!!) Duvall's character is clearly phychotic. It's tragic what's happened to this gentle young man, whose only sin is misjudging the immediate danger he was in, but then that's psychopaths for you!!!! Plus her kids will be scarred for life as well. What with seeing their father murder their mother’s adulterous lover in broad daylight and exposing that poor family’s dirty laundry for the whole world to see. Oh, and their father will be a convicted felon and sent to prison for a long time, possibly for the rest of his natural life. A good movie but a tragic one at that. Word to the wise, there is NOTHING WRONG with being single. Even if it’s for your entire natural life, The Book of Proverbs says so. Especially if a man can’t find the right woman to marry. Or vice versa.
I guess it's some testament to Duvall's performance that so many here find him sympathetic, but...come on. Not only didn't the other guy deserve the bat to the head, but I'm surprised no one is trying to see the wife's side. Does this violence and bullying (dragging her across the field) seem like the isolated behavior of a bad day, rather than character pathology? Do you imagine their marriage up until the point she cheated on him was a happy one? (He admits elsewhere in the film that he was a womanizer.) Everything we see suggests the kind of abusive guy you'd be advising a friend of yours to leave.
Well said. Yes, the movie implies that he has not been a good guy and has likely cheated on or abused his wife in the past. Those who say, "look at how this one moment screwed up his life" seem to be missing the whole premise of the film. This guy has been screwing his life up for some time and his preaching has become little more than a path to money and celebrity.
Forgiveness of sins is part of Christianity. His wife wants out of the marriage. And, through legal but shady maneuverings, she also deprives him of his church and his job. Sonny gets drunk, wades into a Little League game being coached by the youth minister and bangs him on the head with a baseball bat. He regrets it and the alcohol consumption played a big part in what he did. That is why later on in the movie he chases a drinker away from a bar.
That's total BS. A real man of God is still a man and capable of incredible acts of evil, especially when pushed to the edge. King David was called the man after God's own heart and he committed adultery. Moses was considered God's greatest prophet ever and he killed a man in Cold blood. Samson was at times filled with God's holy spirit and yet he still was a whoremonger at times. Even Jesus turned over tables in righteous indignation. Anger is a part of any human and their experience. When somebody cheats with your wife and puts you on blast like that in public, anything is possible. You sound really naive.

Everything we see suggests the kind of abusive guy you'd be advising a friend of yours to leave.
I see the wife's side, but cheating on your VIOLENT husband, with his subordinate, and flaunting it. Stupid move
He not only lost his wife and kids but he lost his church as well since she managed to get him banned from it.
Im like a double shot of novocaine. I ain't really feelin for him.
Le Texas doit devenir son propre pays, des millions de camionneurs sont nécessaires
The man should have minded his own business and not come between a man n his kids
Dorong. Push.
Para que aprenda a no quedarse con la mujer y la familia de otro! Un adultero DAÑINO
Are a lot of people from the United States going to move to Europe
A real man of God would never act like this.
🎃🎃💀💀
Sonny is evil.
farraw got to heaven and asked god for a small favour, please god she said, look after the children down on earth. god delivered, four hours later guess who hit the road .. a a a aahahhahahahaa
One of the worst films ever.
great scene from a massively overrated film. duvall is great in a performance that doesn't matter, in an unnecessary movie that glorifies the cult of chris-cheat-yanatee. pretentious snooze-fest, complete vanity project.
You're pretty much standing alone with that opinion. This movie is universally praised it's one of the best Independent films of all time. It doesn't glorify the crazies at all. It shines a light on the reality of a whole subculture.
@@andrewwiggins7374 i have no problem standing alone. however, in this one, there are plenty of cinephiles that agree with me.
Guess he shouldn't have been running his mouth
