It's definitely in my top five. I don't know I'd go greatest ever, but it's up there. I love how Duvall didn't do what every other Hollywood person would do if they made a movie about a preacher. He really treats the characters and the subject matter with respect. I've watched it probably twenty times, read the screenplay, I love it.
See, now I’ve always believed that. I really don’t think that when Christ said to “turn the other cheek” that he meant be a total pacifist and don’t ever fight.
That's not what is meant by defending his flock. You protect them from the wiles of Satan by preparing them and teaching them so they don't fall victim.
@@MrBastilleDay Jesus was speaking of insult and disrespect. You turn the cheek and not lash out because you are called to be a redeemer. Christ is not a pacifist. When he returns, he is coming with a sword to execute judgment. Also, Jesus of 2009 years ago was not the Christ
It's sooo good, man I remember watching this as a young teen and I loved it. My parents were super religious, but I loved how this movie just had a fantastic story to tell.
I love the way Sammy (Walton Goggins) gets up and follows EF while he approaches this guy clearly looking for trouble. Sammy was so very loyal to EF and even when the cops come he follows them outside to make sure EF is ok.
I grew up with Walt. Known him all my life. Nicest guy you will meet. Here's a fun fact for you. His two front teeth are false. We were at the local ball field and my brother hit a foul ball that smacked Walt right in the mouth as he was walking by. LOL...He will never forget us! But he really is a genuinely nice guy. He has always been this way. Douglasville, Ga.
My Favorite of this Great Legends Many He has this Special Quality that the Other Great Old Hollywood Stars before .I Belive he became this Role Unlike Any Others .The Lord Blessed Robert Duvall with his Great Gifts he Shares Robert Gave the Lord a Return on His Investment. This Film Reminds me of my Current Struggles as I falter with my Walk with Jesus .
"You want the Lord to watch me kick your ass?" "I don't need the Lord." 👊👊👊👊👊👊 ".. I'm gonna come back to see you." "Yeah.. you'll be coming back seeing the same thing. Won't you?" Stone Cold. LMAO
Then when he does come back with other thugs and a bulldozer, instead of responding with violence and anger, EF embraces him and prays for him and tells him he loves him and would do anything for him. Such a beautiful film.
That's jus like the devil..he'll come right in the church n distract the service the but the devil is liar..the saints kept on praising God..n they sang "There is Power in the Blood of the Lamb" callin on God to intercede even as a pastor u have to be ready to fight the devil spiritually AND sometimes naturally like the pastor did..he was scared
BACK IN 1999, I GOT INTO CHRISTIANISM by my late wife will, i mean, i was in there because of her, but i immediately assumed the many faces of my own spiritul and moral situation, not that i had ever commited a murder or something, but i carried burdens really heavy from when i was a kid, and the death of many of my pets, some done as euthanasia when they got older or brutally sick, so i had this weight on my heart... it was during one of those late night marathons at tv when i came across this movie and i gotta say it touched me deeply, not because the kind of church but because the way you could free people from their own burdens, the songs were also a discovery for me, used as i was with those cheesy marcos witt music and the like , it was a breeze of fresh air... a year later, my newfound faith grow colder as i faced the realities between the ´´should be´´ and the actual thing at churches, the greed, the vanities, the immorality made me question the whole thing and i had to quit , but the good impression this movie left in me persist to this day, sometimes when i am alone i begin to sing ´´victory is mine´´, even when the kernel of that faith i had one day has dissapeared... nowadays, after my wife and kids died between 2006- 2007 , and i had no church or religion to rely on, this story comes to my mind , will i find the ´´path to damascus´´some day again??? i doubt it, but this movie will always bring a smile to my sad face... just my comment...
Abdul, the rapture is imminent, please don't quit, you are precious, don't give the enemy the pleasure of torturing you anymore, I pray that you are Born Again? if not please surrender your life to Jesus, I'd love to meet you up there. In His love, Praying for you Brother.((0)) ((0)) ((0))
Abdul please read Romans, particularly 8:18. Come back to the fold friend. Suffering is not proof that God doesnt care. In fact He promised us that we would suffer and go through trauma and loss. He also promised to send His Spirit to aid us. I pray He comes to you. You matter. I added you as a friend. I pray that you see this post buddy. May The Lord bless you.
Séamus Ó Dálaigh During a recent snow storm up hereI helped push out a few stuck cars. I am not old but I am 43. I helped some young men in their late teens push a couple cars out and it occurred to me while watching them struggle to push out this car that they have no strength anymore. I pushed it out and a few more. I hurt a bit the next day but it occurs to me that many of these young guys don't have the same core of muscle that we did at their age. These kids were skinny and weak. That is from this shit modern culture. We all grew up working, playing hard, chores, family projects, and weightlifting and walking and riding bikes everywhere. They grew up getting rides everywhere from mom and having no natural male activities. I feel so sorry for this generation of kids.
Séamus Ó Dálaigh I never did.the military but work was a part of life to us. We played a lot too. But play back then was far more work. Yes, we dug snow forts and the regular kind. Played ball and walked and rode bikes everywhere. At 40 I was unemployed and found a job in a papermill. The owner's wife hired me (small mill) and I was told I would have to hand pallet paper behind a fast line. I told her I could do that but might have to build back up to it a bit. She told me that looking at me she figured I was stronger than most of the men half my age. I initially thought she must be joking but quickly bound out otherwise. They were not all weak. Some kids still were physically active but most of them were weak. The ones that were not when I learned their backgrounds I realized they had old fashioned families and upbringings. The funny thing is that I am overweight. The doctors always tell me I need to lose some real weight and I should but yet I see these kids who are skinny but have no muscle mass in their body core. I am fat but have that past of hard work and still keep active. This young generation is doomed. Not by any means all of them but most think that life is on that computer they are carrying. Very bad.
@SpiralSelective the Lord loves their pureness. Some people can't understand the main goal is not the best job, the prettiest girl, better car. You name it... The human way ignores God, only to get that instead of love. There is still a big hole in your heart to be fulfilled, son
This film is so amazing. Duvall really had a passion for this story and wrote, directed, financed, and starred in.
His faith was so strong.
got nothing to do with faith. the man was angry and desperate
This is the greatest movie ever. There is not one scene that doesn't impact you.
Indeed

So true
I agree with u 💯
Thornton's characters in these movies are always great. I've met men in real life like his character in this movie and he nailed it.
I love how they sing Power in The Blood while he's whooping the troublemaker.
C. Dawg Knight Me too! It was so perfect! 😂
Aw man, what a scene!!!! Love it
“You gonna preach to me?”
No sir, I’m not.
This was a very powerful an accurate scene! A Sheppard is suppose to defend his flock!
Gotta be a tough loving Shepard

Lol lol lol

Boo Radley just kept looking out for the children.
Duvall is a legend.
Not only are Duvall and Thornton 2 of the finest actors they are made for smaller town characters as anyone.
Thornton did this film as a favor to Duvall because Duvall appeared the year before in Thornton's film Sling Blade as Carl's father.
Walton Goggins is really good southern actor too.
I love the way Sammy (Walton Goggins) gets up and follows EF while he approaches this guy clearly looking for trouble. Sammy was so very loyal to EF and even when the cops come he follows them outside to make sure EF is ok.
Powerful film
Amazing performances
One of the best
Nobody moves that book.
E.F obviously stands for Excellent Fists
He's lucky he didn't give him the bat.
He laid hands on him!😂😅
Ha ha, good one.
The Corleone family taught him well
enjoys fighting
Please never think I don't need Love. That is exactly what has always been missing from my Earthly life. Genuine love and respect from a real man.
1 John 4:7-10.
My favorite perhaps after “Lonesome Dove” and “Second Hand Lions!”
Walton--you have been under-rated and undervalued as an actor. Your work on "The Shield" and "Justified" have proved your brilliance.
"Sons of Anarchy" 😂😂
"The Fastest Indian" too 👍

@@Southernguitar74 I assumed most of his perfect front teeth were false since his teeth look so perfect. They even make a reference to it on Justified
The good shepherd protects his flock.
Incredible film. The character was so flawed and so human.
That's what made this movie so great.
We're ALL flawed; including those called OF GOD.
King David is a classic example of that.
2:19 The Kids made this scene even funnier lol 😂
Why do I love this movie?
Because it's amazing, and it was made by the guy who stars in it because he loves God and wants to inspire people
Are you a Christian?
You are still loved even if you do not wish to be.
One of the most entertaining scenes I've ever seen in a movie I mean real through and through.

Damn I miss the southern churches
Norma the same up north ?
Lol!!!!! The little boy in the window ahhhh lol!!!

"I don't need the Lord."

don't worry about religion, you don't need it, you're fine
Billy Bob Thornton was in this movie because Robert Duvall had been in Slingblade as a favor.
"I reckon I don't wanna sit in church around a buncha french-fried-potat-ers mmm-hmmm"
@@michaeltaylor7332 It's a cross reference between tye two movies Mikey. Have a nice day.
Billy Bob Thornton & Hunter Hayes, you can't get better that😀
Hunter Hayes?
Hunter Hayes is the little blonde boy with the accordion at the beginning of the scene.
phenomenal flim by Duvall
He was welcome back into the church if he would act right.
Then he received a bit of reproof with love ❤️ ……….
This is hilarious
I'm an atheist. This is one of my top 10 favorite films of all time.
A great film.
Preacher man fix'n lay hands on somebody.
An old Baptist pastor brother of mine used to say they may have to have a come to Jesus meeting LOL
Let's see what you're made of!!!
I don't think worshipping the Lord is any kind of problem either!
Amen!!!!
I forgot the troublemaker was the same man in Sling Blade, but did remember he was the same man playing Bad Santa.
Billy Bob Thornton
“E.F.” I guess he found out why they called him “E.F.”
Classic
He got a holy butt whooping!!
I did not recognize Billy Bob Thornton in this
He still hadn't lost the weight he gained for Slingblade... both were filmed around the same time
this movie seems like was filming in Brazil
there's no transsexuals in this. sorry.
what is the song name?
Power in the blood
Poor Billi Bob Thornton. Got his ass kicked by an old man.
