Just a friendly tip from a fellow New Englander, born and raised in Salem. DO NOT RENT A CAR - SAVE YOUR $. (AT LEAST IN OCTOBER DO NOT DO IT) There is no parking anyways, and so much traffic! You are better off taking Ubers, or local transportation. 👻
@arlenysanabel like I mentioned in the video we were going right from Salem to Connecticut for a wedding so a rental car was needed for us and because we were going before it got super busy we knew that we wouldn't have a super hard time finding parking! We both get super motion sick so we prefer to rent a car over taking Ubers or public transportation. We actually didn't really experience any traffic and had no issues finding parking but I totally see how if you come later in the tourist season it would be easier to not rent a car ☺️
New Jersey here! My family and I took a trip to Salem last year the weekend around Halloween and we drove our own car there and yeah I gotta agree trying to find parking was crazy we were lucky to find a good spot. I also gotta say I love New England it’s such a nice place would definitely wanna come back again 😊
You hit such a sweet spot for going to Salem! Coming from someone who went to Salem State and lived/commuted to Salem for 4 years, there is always someone in a costume walking around, but definitely more so in October. By always I mean Monday morning classes you can pass someone on the street in a mask 😅 Some additional tips and tricks for anyone still coming to Salem this fall: 1. ALWAYS book restaurants reservations in advance in the spooky season. 2. Take a train in from Boston if driving isn’t an option. The MBTA drops you off right outside of downtown. 3. Weekday mornings will be your best friend for certain historic attractions if you don’t want to fight tooth and nail for an inch of space. So happy to hear you enjoyed it ✨ I am an absolute addict when it comes to Halloween, spooky season and witches too
Thank you so much for sharing all of this! It was such a dreamy trip, I already want to go back next year! I didn't even know you could take the train in which is a great option for those who don't want to get a rental car!!
@@CarterSullivan Yes!! We stayed in Lynn last year and rode the bus to Salem. I definitely think we’ll take a car next time, but the public transportation in that area is great!!! We did a whole week long trip just using public transit. It did limit us a bit on how far we could go simply because it’s takes a lot longer when you’re switching buses and trains, but it was still very doable.
I always thought Salem was just something from the movies, but then I found out it was actually a town and it existed, and I was like, "Oh my God, it really exists."
@@matheusananiasdonato7615 you and I both!! I found out it was a real place when I was probably 15-16 and ever since have wanted to go! Sleepy Hollow is next🤭
@@CarterSullivan The city became famous because of the movie (The Crucible), right? But, it's not even a movie from my time, I've never watched it. But I've seen clips and stuff. Since I like the American fall, something related to this place always comes up.
Your videos are so lovely. Recently in the past two months going through a breakup and heartbreak and your vids are so sweet and comforting for me! Love Salem, I’ve never been as I’m from Ireland, but you showcased it so wonderfully. So lovely ❤
People always miss Marblehead! It’s like a calmer/spooky version of Salem. Good food, cool grocery store, lots of vintage/antique shopping. Park near the landing restaurant and just walk around and enjoy all the homes. Loophe jt there. Beach nearby with big waves when windy. Usually see surfers out when the waves are kicking. It’s a 15/20 min drive away from Salem .
@@deanna3223 we had actually planned on going but didn't have enough time. One of my good friends is from there and recommended it 🥰 if we had more than a day we would have gone & it's for sure on our list of places to go next time!
@@CarterSullivan aaaah!! It was one of our favorite parts of my family’s trip when they visited (pioneer village was also great - it happens only 4 days out the month of Halloween)

Hope you enjoyed! I live like 20 min from here ❤was just in Peabody for an appointment this AM and yes we pronounce town names weird so don’t worry. Peabody Essex Museum is amazing and Jaho is the best coffeeeeee (for your next visit 😊)

@@CarterSullivan ohhh haha I commented before finishing watching (still watching right now 😂). They have an almond joy coffee I love and their Vietnamese coffee is so yummy.
My bestie and I went to Salem last September and stayed in an Airbnb right off Derby street....we would wake up every morning and make a bee line straight to Jaho, lol 😄
I grew up not far from Salem and have spent a decent amount of time there. I had so many memories come up watching you walk around. It does get really busy the closer you get to Halloween, but people do dress up more around then. A car would likely be more of a hassle than anything the weekend of Halloween because of both crazy traffic and minimal parking. I'm glad you had a good time!
That's so true! I think I'd love to come up closer to Halloween next time but not sure if I could handle the crowds! But good advice to maybe not bring a car if you go closer to Halloween!
I grew up in MA! Alternative to Uber would be the commuter rail. It takes about an hour to hour and a half to get to Salem by train from the airport. The airport has free bussing/subway to the Chelsea station. A round trip pass is $16 per person (round it up to just under $20 per person if you take the subway to the airport from the train station on your way back). 😊
If you're staying in Boston the best way to get in during Halloween season is the train. It's about $18/person and the Salem train stop is literally 2-minute walk from downtown. -Someone who grew up down the street
I grew up in the area a town or two over from Salem and I LOVE that you stumbled upon Dairy Witch. It's been my family's go-to ice cream spot since I was a kid and love to see out-of-towners enjoy it!
It was so good! We love trying to find lots that aren't super touristy and more like a local spot and I had so many locals recommend dairy witch to us and we loved it so much!!!
For those who are planning ahead for the Witches Halloween Ball in Salem I would certainly suggest buying tickets and booking your lodging early. If your staying outside Salem maybe consider an Uber if you'll be drinking. This is alwlays a huge event.
Pausing the video just a few minutes in to comment. For anyone wondering how natives pronounce Peabody, it’s more like pee-buh-dee or pee-biddy. Likely because it’s named after an old English surname and that’s how they pronounced it. Just wanted to note that for anyone curious lol. 🥰 ETA: (Not sure if this gets mentioned bc I’m early in the video) but for anyone visiting Salem who is interested in the history surrounding the witch trials, you really need to go to Danvers MA as well. In the 1600’s there was Salem Town and Salem Village. Salem Town is where Salem is located today and there are many important locations tied to the trials there, but Salem Village is now called Danvers and there are multiple key spots there as well. Including the location where it all literally started (the ruins of the home of Reverend Samual Paris)… Just a little insider tip that most tourists miss. 🖤
I had a conversation with someone in Salem about the different pronunciations. I'm from Baltimore and we have the Peabody Institute named after George Peabody, but we pronounce it the way Carter says it in the beginning of the video. We were fascinated by they way each person said it :)
@Susan-nm3sx Perhaps when the area was settled English peoples accents were different than they are in present day. Language and accents are interesting and ever changing.
It's also cheaper to stay in Boston & there's a train that will take you directly to Salem. I stayed at a hotel in Boston that was right by one of the train stops. (Also daily passes are super affordable!) And Salem's bus system is pretty easy to use (and cheap) to get around to the farther touristy locations. So if anyone is coming from outta state or country you honestly don't need a rental car to get around at all! Only other thing I suggest is try to do your research / plan out what you want to do during your visit. Some of the location attractions have weird business hours (ex. the pioneer village is not open on the weekends) - Also right down the street from Max's house. So always good to check if something is on your bucket list like those locations! And if you're wanting to go when things are more decorated for the season but are trying to avoid the huge crowds, the very end of September is your best bet! :)
@lisagonzalez413 It really depends on time of year because we were originally staying in Boston but hotel costs were absolutely disgusting for when we were going so it was cheaper for us to stay in Peabody and get a rental car! So I'd defintely tell people to weigh your options based on cost! Yes I think it's pretty common to plan your trip out ahead of time/make not of attractions you want to see and write down hours of operation so I don't ever mention it in travel vlogs. But ya know maybe there are people who just wing it... but as a Type A person I cannot imagine not planning out what we want to do 😂

We went to Boston a few years ago and we rode a train from Boston to Salem pretty inexpensively. We did not have a rental car and we asked our hotel how far it was to Salem and they said about a 15 minute train ride. It was super easy. I want to go back again!
As a local Salem resident, Ledger and Settler are my favorite restaurants - they are on the pricer side and may require reservations but completely worth it. For seafood, try Finz, Sea Level Oyster Bar or the Lobster Shanty and for burgers/pub food, Mercy Tavern is one of my favorites. They also have live music so it's a fun spot. You also do not need to drive or uber into Salem, please take the train! It's $10 round-trip from Boston on the weekends and $16 roundtrip during the week. If you must drive, I recommend driving into Beverly or further north to park and then taking the train south to Salem. Hope this helps! P.S. Dairy Witch opened in 1952 and is my absolute favorite spot as well :)
Ah those 2 were on our list to try but we didn't have time to get to them. I'm allergic to all seafood so sadly none of that for us 😭 Like I mentioned the video we were heading right to a wedding so we needed a rental car plus we knew we weren't coming at peak tourist time . We both are prone to really bad motion sickness so we can't really do any other form of transportation however, I definitely have been telling people if they can don't rent a car because parking will be very limited come, October!

We went to Boston a few years ago and we rode a train from Boston to Salem pretty inexpensively. We did not have a rental car and we asked our hotel how far it was to Salem and they said about a 15 minute train ride. It was super easy. I want to go back again!
Oh awesome!!
That’s awesome they have trains definitely need to look into that
I really loved this style video!!! What a perfect stopover enroute to the wedding!
Thank you so much!!
I'm allergic to all seafood so sadly none of that for us 😭
Like I mentioned the video we were heading right to a wedding so we needed a rental car plus we knew we weren't coming at peak tourist time . We both are prone to really bad motion sickness so we can't really do any other form of transportation however, I definitely have been telling people if they can don't rent a car because parking will be very limited come, October!
I love recommendations from locals! Thanks so much! 🎃😁
until this year I found out about this amazing place... I really want to go, It is one of my dream place to visit. Now my second place to visit in USA.
Thank you. I used to live in Maine and we would visit Salem every fall. I moved to Austin a couple years ago and I've been wanting to visit again so bad lately. This popped up at such a great time for me ❤ missing new england
Aw hope you enjoyed the video and get to visit soon❤️
I live in Maine and I’m only 2 hours from Salem, this video has made me want to go so bad! I’ve never been able to make it down. You made it look so dreamy/cozy, this vlog was so so cute🥰
You have to go!!! It was such a dream in September
I agree with you. I don’t like crowds. Also, love the socks!
@@beacasarrubias79 I mean I don't know if anyone enjoys crowds 🥲 but yea my PTSD is mainly triggered by very crowded places so I don't do well in them at all!
I live in CT and used to have a friend who lived in the next town over so I've been to Salem a bunch at different times of the year but this makes me want to go back ASAP! This year I'm checking out Sleepy Hollow for my spooky season trip!
Omg Sleepy Hollow is next on our fall bucket list hopefully next year 🫶🏻
How fun! I live in this area and it’s always so fun to see people come visit.
Salem native here! You did a nice job showing my town 🥰❤️👍
Loved this vlog!! I visited Salem in July and fell in love!! And I got the same magnet from witch city wicks :))
omg this is crazy you literally went to my job LOL hope you loved!
omg no way!!!! I'd ask you where but don't want to invade your privacy at all! thats so cool🤭
Thank you for this video! We are going Boston / Iceland Trip right now and when we get back from Iceland I wanted to plan a Salem Day trip and this was perfect to see what I would want to check out ❤
Love Salem! We've been a few times. I got married there last October 13th!!
Salem is on my bucket list! I have always wanted to go there.
Right around 5:01 a little orb floats by in the drives seat. Carter, I think you have Casper with you!
@@elizabethseeley4539 I noticed that too!!!! So spooky and I love it. I always like to think its a loved one keeping us safe when we travel🤍
What a neat video. I want to go to Salem someday in the Fall. I love Barebells. My fave!
I was just in Salem the first week of August, right before the Black Veil opened their 2nd shop. So sad I had just missed it 😭🖤
Alll the feeels of fall though…LOVE IT❤
My husband and I went to Salem in 2019 and stayed in Peabody! Best decision!
I'm so glad you enjoyed your trip! I was there the same time last year as the last stop on my US road trip (from the UK) and it was so nice reliving some of those memories! We also got the train from Boston and found it really easy. Love all your content but the fall stuff is my ultimate favourite 😍 🎃🍂🍁
Next year, I'm going to spend Halloween in Salem (maybe). I'm fascinated by Halloween in the United States. I'm from Portugal and in Portugal we don't celebrate Halloween.... But during the summer I will work and I will save money to go, I hope I can go ❤
That sounds like a dream!!
this is perfect, i just stumbled on your channel and been loving your fall videos.... I live and work near salem, MA, and want to explore there this fall season, really looking forward to hearing your experience, recommendations and take on salem :) okay back to the video
Hope you enjoyed & it was helpful🥰
How fun! Great video and such helpful tips for planning a trip! I love Halloween and can’t wait to go!
People that notice and get excited about noticing Allison’s house right away are true fans
This is a dream of mine, traveling to USA with the person I love and exploring these beautiful small towns ❤
Truly nothing like it🥰
Truly nothing like it🥰
Southern Tier Brewing is in my tiny little hometown, so cool to see it everywhere!
No way!!!
I recommend a visiting Salem Maritime on Derby Street.Take a walk on Derby Wharf out to the lighthouse.
Yes we had both of those on our list but it was pretty rainy/windy the day we were there so most outdoor activities didn't happen. Next time hopefully
I live right next to the witch museum and love it. So glad you enjoyed Salem!
Ah no way!! do you think it's worth going as someone who already knows a lot about the witch trials for future trips?
@@CarterSullivan I would say no. I think most people are disappointed in it. I think you made a good call skipping it on a time crunch!
It’s maybe a 20 min overview of what happened, so good if you know nothing about the trials
i love YOUR SWEATSHIRT! WHERE DID YOU GET IT??
@@lorilemere9088 moon gift shop!
Doing this in two weeks! Thanks for the recommendations!
Hope you enjoy Salem!!
@@CarterSullivan thank you!
Oh I’m so jealous! I’ve been wanting to go for years!
Thank you so much for all that great info. And tips. I would love to visit there sometime during the fall someday soon and this will be helpful. Looks like such a good and witchy time. Thanks for this awesome video.
Love this! Thanks for the info! 🎃😁
I am literally so excited that you where here. I was there filming vlogs for my channel the day you left, and am always posting Salem content!! thank you for sharing your time with us!
Ah no way, that's so cool!!!
@@CarterSullivan I always go to the book club that is hosted at Nocturne! It’s so much fun
OG's remember your horse Salem ❤
Yes love my boy❤️ That was the reason I felt called to him is because I was obsessed with the witches and witch trials as a kid!!!
Love the fall colors
You can also take a train from Boston to right in downtown if you want to avoid taking a car!
@@sarahlieberson1803 yes we did learn that after!! We were driving right to CT for a wedding so we needed a car but a great idea for anyone who doesn't want to drive!
When you 14:52 corrected your pronunciation of Peabody I squealed YESSSSS. Bahahaaa 😂😂😂😂😅 I’m 20 minutes north of Pee-Biddy lmaooo 😂
I get it tho nothing here is pronounced the way it’s written 🥸😛😅😅😅😅
I absolutely loved your Salem vlog. It’s been over 18 maybe easily 20 years since the last time I visited Salem. Yes I live 20 minutes maybe 40 with traffic north but the crowd is insane. lol I might plan a trip next year now that my kiddos are older.
@@HSSbyNairo I do not understand this weird way that New England people pronounce things completely different than how its spelled 😭😭 Pee-biddy just sounds silly to me hehe
We stayed in Pea-ba-dee last year when we went and boy do the people who live there hate when we pronounce it pea body 😂 love your vlogs as always!
But like it's literally how its spelt... I don't get it at all. New England has weird not obvious names for things😂😂
@@CarterSullivanI moved to Florida from Massachusetts & they make our city names sound simple 😂 like Ybor always gets me or Dunedin
@@CarterSullivanIt’s from the Old English, so not “literally”.
@@TheGamine84 maybe you should find something better to do then reply something negative to every comment left on this video. do better, be kinder. this is a lighthearted travel vlog sharing my travel, that's all. this is clearly not the channel for you and that's ok❤️
@@CarterSullivan Where was I negative? Maybe you should respective a local with an opinion. You be kinder and more patient.
Generally the street performers show up mid September. Right now is "First Weekend" so the crowd is here.
I am from India 🇮🇳 I love Halloween festival we also celebrate this festival in India 😀😆
It's too bad that some stores are not available in some cities. 🎃🍂👻🍁Salem is a wonderful place, everyone should definitely visit it, of course, when the economy is normal lol. Life is getting really expensive. We think twice before doing anything lol . Thanks for sharing Carter your videos best ! 🫶🏻🤗
INSTANTLY made me crave some good witchy films. Please suggest some!!
One thing I'm good at is spooky season movie and book recs but I feel like there are not a ton of good witchy movies😭 I do love Witches of Eastwick, Practical Macic (obvi), the original The Witches movie w/ Angelica Huston & The Craft!
Thank you for this video! I’m planning my first trip to Salem next year in October and this was very helpful!! Also I found your sweatshirt online from Moon’s, and if you don’t mind, I wanted to know what size you got? I want mine to fit similar to yours lol
I got an 2 XL! I'm 5'11 so typically have to size up abit for it to fit me length/arm wise!
Jaho is great, there's a location around downtown on Derby!
You should have stopped by BitBar.
So while we love and embrace Halloween the lifestyle is more about inclusivity. Many of your local shop keeps, particularly in the witchy shops are Witches, pagans, Wiccans, etc all year round. We have everyone else too!
We went to Jaho as well the morning we got in but didn't take any clips! Our coffee was good but we also got bagels an they were so fresh and yummy!!!!
wow it looks nice!
I love this so cozy. 🎃
Such a wonderful video. I enjoyed it very much. Happy Fall to you! I’m new just subbed! 🎃🧡🍁🍂🤎
Ah welcome to our little corner of the internet!! We make fall & halloween our personality this time of year around here😂🫶🏻
I live like two hours from Salem I was just there last week lol glad you guys had fun
Omg it's fantastic❤❤❤❤❤It's one of my dream
Massachusetts resident here. It's pronounced P-biddy. But said kind of fast. If that makes sense. Thank you for this vlog! I've lived in Western/Central Mass my whole life and I've only been to Salem once as a kid. Now I'm getting my boyfriend to go during a week day soon for a date day! 🩷
Yes a few friends told us that at the wedding but it makes no sense to me because its spelt Pea-body 😭😭
@@CarterSullivan hahaha understandable. I've lived here my whole life and pronounced Worcester like Wore-ses-ter until I was a teenager. 😂
Carter your vlogs makes me so calm and peaceful, Thank you so so so much for making such a wonderful beautiful vlogs for us and I will always be your supportive🥹💫💗
i need this omg! love it
I would love to visit Salem!!😊
thanks for those interesting spots and showing us around ::)
i love Salem!!
I think we were there at the same time! But your reasoning for not going to the Salem Witch museum is interesting to me. Cuz I didn't go to learn information. I went cuz it's THE Salem Witch museum. As in, for the fun! I guess I'm learning ppl go to museums for different reasons.
That's so fair! If we had more time we would have considered going for sure but since we had a harsh out time to leave that afternoon it was the one spot we cut from the itinerary since I knew alot already!! But if we had more time we may have considered going or may go next time! But since I already knew so much it was the first item to go compared to something we had never seen/didn't know!
I’d love to visit one day!
I bet it was extra busy the weekend after you went since it was officially the first day of fall! 😅
Ah that makes so much sense actually!!
Great video and inspo for our upcoming trip to Salem next week. My husband is allows fire fighter, do you remember the shop's name where you purchased the patch from? 😊
It's from Moons Gift Shop ☺️ It was one of our favourite spots to grab souvenirs
Thank you for asking! I kept looking for a store called Merimento lol
Yesssssss NE is the best time for fall spooky season
THE BEST
Excellent vlogg
Salem in Kazakh means Hello 😂❤
Loving this 😮❤
Loved your video! I’m going next month for my birthday (it’s a tradition) and I was curious, where did you got the Witch City Fire Department patch? I love the size of it and would love to add it to my patch collection. Thx!
It's from Moons Gift Shop!! They had just got them in when we went 🤭
Hi!! Thanks hope sharing your Salem trip!! Fantastic !!! Please tell me what shop you purchased your sweatshirt ? Love it !!! Arleen
Moon Gift Shop!
@@CarterSullivan Thank You!
Ahhh this is SO cool!!! I didn’t know this was a real place! Is it like that all year round? I am planning on going to Boston in May (from the UK) and now want to go here 🎃😮 x
Yes you can visit all year round!
How fun! I need to watch Hocus Pocus now this evening 🎃💕👻
I’m a scientist and I love the scientific history behind the Salem witch trials
Looks amazing
Amo este video✨
You didn't visit New England if you didn't mispronounce the name of a town!! Welcome 😊 also there is a ferry and commuter rail from Boston and 100/10 do that over driving if you stay in Boston. They have more service specifically for spooky season.
Good to know!
