  • Doug Berry of the Eastern Sierra Region of California and Nevada visits the Land of Wovoka along the Knife Edge of the Wilson Canyon trail. Wovoka was raised by the Wilson family at their ranch in the nearby Mason Valley, Nevada area and was known by the name Jack Wilson. He lived from 1856- Sep 20th, 1932 and is buried in Schurze, Nevada. He was a prophet of the Ghost Dance Movement amongst native Americans. Followers of the Ghost Dance experienced the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29, 1890 at Pine Ridge, South Dakota. This was the deadliest shooting in American history with 246 people killed or wounded. This hike takes you to remote Lyon County, Nevada

What an amazing hike through time. Neraly 20 million year old volcanic melted rocks called breccia, with cemented pieces
of older sedimentary rocks (probably mixed with rhyolite as the base) which also can be seen exposed on a hillside and andesitic tephra with sandstone piles everywhere buried many ancient cottonwood and pines trees here amid an ancient lake. Over time the trees buried here turned to petrified wood. The larger lake subsided into the few remaining smaller lakes around here. Lake Tahoe is biggest because it is higher into the Sierras. Amazing amount of erosion later exposed the now petrified trees. Don't know too much about this area but it is otherwise totally fascinating to see. Geologists and hikers field day! Nice vlog Doug and Kellie!

Thank you Steven, I knew about the breccia with the rocks cemented in, there are two massive examples along the route I skipped in this video. I think this area was completely covered in water at one time in the past, but I am no expert. Look forward to your thoughtful comments, have a great weekend!

Another great adventure, referencing a deserving person from the past... I couldn't get over how desolate the area seemed. Then you stood on the cliff, and we saw the roadway below. We barely saw any wildlife, but noone minds missing rattlesnakes. YIKES... The wildflowers were lovely, and unexpected, as were the petrified trees...WOW... I KNOW you already are, but be careful on those high cliffs, Doug. I guess that's one of the meanings of 'walk the walk'. (I'd be with Kellie hiking down below.) Thank you, as always, for the interesting info, and history, you impart to us. You're educating one of those, old Yankees, here.😉😮 Another very, very enjoyable video is in the books. Thank you both, Doug and Kellie, for bringing us along on these exciting journeys. As I've stated before, there's nothing better, and safer, than to experience these ventures with a soul mate, who shares such similar interests... Seeing those snowcapped mountains, in the distance, was an added treat. Hoping you both enjoy a marvelous weekend.

Hi Rhonda, "but noone misses rattlesnakes"....the exception being the out of state herpetologist who slithers into the museum every so often unanounced, as if to just come inside to get his cold blooded attitude warmed up. He slinks up to Kellie and slyly tries to get any information he can from her. He is always looking for information; information on snakes. "Where did Doug see that snake exactly?" She said he appears nice enough, but I don't trust him. It is as if this cunning scientist's only friends are the snakes around here. He implied in his manipulations that the rattlesnakes I am filming in my videos are rare and protected. Protected by who? The mob, politicians, the government? He said one of the government agencies .....I guess one of the cold blooded ones that disseminates misinformation like some wicked slippery snake! Anyway, this guy researching his friends the snakes has never bitten me and neither have the rattlesnakes, so I'm good with that. Enjoy your New England spring my friend...till our next adventure! 🇺🇸🩵🐉👀🦖🐲

@@CalNeva That is rather strange. Neither of you EVER interfere with the wildlife you encounter... and certainly would not provoke a rattlesnake! If anything, I would say you're both conservationists, thank goodness. I hope you and Kellie have a lovely weekend, Doug. I know I won't have to remind you to go outdoors, and enjoy nature.

    Fascinating formations,nice little canyon!
If anyone has spent time in outdoor Nev. , the wind is just a part of basin life!
When you include it in your videos it just adds to the
    Realism of your presentations!
If you don't care to listen to the wind,go to Disneyland !

My only concern is I sure hope you weren't as close to the edge as it looked like you were, I got vertigo just watching! Kellie may have to put you on a short leash my Brother, haha 😄

Hi my Brother! It was a good time, especially since I didn't roll off the hill due to gravity. It was odd: we were going down towards Tonopah, but it was even too cold there that day...so we ended up in Wilson Canyon because Kellie wanted to warm up after a recent trip north. It was the warmest place for many miles around. She is making some original recipe cookies that are amazing with hot drinks like coffee. I ate them all, but she should be baking more soon....so I can show them and make you hungry next time. 🇺🇸🍪

Great video Doug and Kellie. I have traveled through Wilson Canyon several times. The Walker River is flowing from all of that snow melt in the Eastern Sierra's. Have you ever been to Berlin Ichthyosaur SP and Ione? They are located just East of Gabbs. I was there in 2018. Hard to believe that Marine Reptiles were swimming around Nevada many, many moons ago.
