  • Every essential tool you need to Shape a Board is linked down below!
    In today's video I give you the low-down on every basic tool you need to shape a board a home.
    In my opinion, there are three different levels of surfboard shaping tools-Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.
    The level of tools depend on how much you want to get into shaping boards and how much money you are willing to spend on shaping tools. Do you want to one board and be done? Do you want shape a quiver? or do you want to even start selling off some boards?
    You can get the job done with the ESSENTIAL beginner tools, but the intermediate and advanced tools help make the shaping process faster and more efficient. Like I said in this video, it took me 36 hours to shape my first board with the level one beginner tools- just a block of wood, sand paper, saw, and basic planer. These tools are of course not as efficient, however, they are LOW budget.
    As you continue to buy more and more tools, the faster and more efficient shaping surfboards become with a little less money in the piggy bank. ;)
    I hope you learn some essential tips from this video.

    I just started shaping in my garage, in Florida. Honestly, I'd now consider the planer a must have tool. I started foiling down with a hard block and 40grit sandpaper (not nearly coarse enough...), but it just takes wayy too long and with the heat I was sweating buckets. The $40 Wen planer did the same job in about 2 minutes what would have been hours haha. Totally worth it in time and sweat, and cheaper than the Greenlight rasps.

    Great video! Got me stoked to start in my first board, my PU blank just came in!
    Any tips for working with PU?

      Heck ya stoked to hear it! I rough shape all my PU boards with 50 grit sandpaper, life is 100% easier with 50 grit. Once you have got your blank shaped, fine sand with 120 of if your super fancy give it a final polish to 220!

    Haven't ben surfing too long, can stand and catch some little waves. But I feel like shaping my own board, and making it work in the water is the ultimate surf vibe. So... Thanks for this video!! This made things a bit clear. I am curious on how to get some finboxes in on a budget, haha. Anyways thanks so much, decided to subscribe as well!

      Hey stoked to hear you want to make a board, it’s a fun process and so cool to actually surf something you made, glad my vid was informative, when I started there just wasn’t a ton of info out there and it was so confusing figuring out what I needed so decided to pass along the info! Check out these knock off brand boxes, I use them on my personal boards and they work great, they are probably made in the same factory honestly amzn.to/3bHODf5

      Normal boxes cost something like $14 a fin box, with upsurf you can get a full set for that much !

    Hey man this is my first time shapping a surfboard can i know how do i measure the thickness if i’m using the level 1 tools? Thank you

    • @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
      @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop  7 місяців тому

      Sorry should have included this! I use this “framing square ruler”. Before you start shaping your rails, while the board is still boxy, you use this ruler and measure the thickness, get the board right to the thickness you want then move on to shaping the rails amzn.to/47kN0LZ

    How do you drill the fin boxes holes on level 1 tools? Thanks

    • @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
      @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop  8 місяців тому

      You can shape a board with super basic tools, level one is all you really need. But for popping in fin boxes, you really need to go all in and buy the router jig setup ua-cam.com/video/zOXwxiaNG-8/v-deo.htmlsi=I8LTfDT7ZDOUjKpu One way around that, especially if you just testing the waters and getting into it, you can hand shape your first board, and then take it to your local glass shop, when you have them glass your board you have the option for them to put in the fun boxes for you! You can technically free hand route fin boxes with just a router and normal bits, but to really get true tight tolerances you pretty much need the jig kit. Hope this helps!

    Been considering getting the Rail Runner tool however I exclusively shape PU foam. You said it tears it pretty aggressively? Would you recommend a different tool for the job?

    • @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
      @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop  11 місяців тому

      I love the Rail runner for eps, really can’t beat it. But for PU I actually prefer using home made 90 degree wood block jig with 50 grit paper glued on. The rail runner is even lower grit, it does an amazing job on eps but it is so low grit it actually doesn’t cut as fast as 50 grit

    Lol these are the tools that would be nice to have yet I do NOT NEED them, remember people has been building surfboards for decades WITHOUT all these capitalist gadgets. I have seen also people doing an excellent job WITHOUT many of these tool.

      @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop  Рік тому

      Yes sir, actually mentioned how you didn’t need most of these 20 seconds into the vid. Shaping boards is such a fun fulfilling craft, don’t want to scare away people trying to get into it because they think they have to spend a ton of money to buy all the fancy stuff. I shaped my first few boards with essentially no tools, works fine just takes longer. I do have to say I’m a bit of a gear head, it’s pretty fun to slowly save up for the next fancier tool, modify them to your liking, or best of all make your own tools that fit your need perfectly. Kazuma has a bunch of handmade sanding tools each specific to sanding a part of a rail etc… super cool
