  • A walkthrough of the long-dead the Westgate Mall a few weeks before it closed forever. All that remains is the craft store while Hy-Vee works out a plan to redevelop the site.

Hard to see this place ever being active again. If there is to be a redevelopment it will involve demolition. It’s a rather odd place in any event. Very narrow hallways makes it feel small and claustrophobic. Glad to see you posting again. Have a great holiday season.

The mall felt more like an office center than a mall. I'm back to posting for the holidays!

Used to live in Madison Wisconsin for almost 12 years when this mall had rocky rococo’s and Hancock fabrics and I think there was some kind of toy shop there too and a little more still open it was moderate business. But east Towne and west Towne mall was where everyone shopped. When I was in high school the east and west Towne malls were the hangout spots plus the movie theatre.

Parts of that mall look more like a medical facility rather than a festive shopping center. 👍 😆

The way the hall curves is scary because somebody could be waiting. Looks depressing and dated. Great video.

I had an idea since hyvee owns the mall. At hyvee they have pizza, Chinese and hot chicken places with a cafe to eat at. So they could put some of those restaurants from their grocery store in the mall with a cafe to sit and eat the food at. Then add other stores and maybe put a small convenient store hyvee in the mall too. Like sell milk and cheese and the basics for people looking to get in and out quick. The midvale mall has a Whole Foods grocery store in it so they could do it.

As a child of the 90s, I remember this mall very differently than the old timers. Dockter’s hobby world was always a favorite. The center of the mall had a University Book Store. I learned martial arts at Karate America. At one time, there was an arcade. I used to get shoes at Famous Footwear. When Pokémon came out, the Pokémon nerds would flock to the card shop. I knew the old rockstar at the express dmv. It’s sad that the mall deteriorated like this. It’s seems as though malls in general fell out of fashion almost as quickly as the gained acclaim. The west side of Madison has changed dramatically, since I grew up there.

You'd think for a winter city like Madison, malls would be popular during those cold days. It's sad how much malls have declined.

When I lived/was growing up there (about a decade ago), I remember there being a bead store, I think a toy store, Hancock Fabrics (which went out of business during the time I lived there), a sports Clothing store, a hair salon/beauty school, and a Tj Maxx. Even as a kid/teen I wondered why so many store areas were empty

Westgate mall was opened in 1960 with 3 major department stores.. Montgomery Ward, JCPENNEY and Manchesters . Also a Kresges and Piggly Wiggly supermarket. Wards closed and Manchesters expanded Penneys and Manchesters moved to West Towne in the 70s. The mall was enclosed and the center court area was created from the penneys space Kresges closed when they opened Kmart down the street .

You should visit the Allouez Center, a small enclosed mall with mostly local tenants located on the corner of Libal Street and St. Joseph Street in Allouez, Wisconsin, a suburb of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Allouez Center is mostly filled with local businesses plus a laundromat, a liquor store and a dialysis hospital...

You should do a video on the Roshek Building in Dubuque, Iowa. It was formally a department store that closed, that was then turned into a downtown mall (sort of) that was then pretty much abandoned, that is now in the process of turning into a downtown shopping court.

Have to say - that was really strange. I would recommend going to the Quad City area to film one of their malls - one is without two anchors. Otherwise, West Des Moines has one with one anchor gone that is not doing great.
