Well you don't have the power to force people to work there, but you do have the power to change contracts after a continental move and threaten jobs (which would mess with living in a new country)
Pretty much all of the work LMG does could be done remotely, and seeing as the vast majority of his employees are more than good enough to get paid double what I suspect they get paid at LMG. Moving to another country would not be required. And then you build up enough goodwill with that new company to just move wherever you damn well please. Because very few countries would reject someone who gets paid $60+ cad an hour to work from home

So if you handed in your two week notice then on the first day after those 2 weeks you could be working for that new employer so there would be no gaps in paychecks, If you want to see an example, look into that incident where rivian poached I think it was 170 Tesla engineers, most of those 170 or however many employees it was. We're all done working at Tesla within the span of a week and they we're all employees of rivian that next week, assuming my memory checks out. Lmg employees would be of a similar value to other media companies as those Tesla engineers were to rivian. And there would be a lot of media companies that could easily afford to double the wage that they pay some of these people. The fact that they stay at LMG tells me everything I need to know
@@scottbuck1572 also another thing I just thought of, Even if what you're saying is 100% correct for all LMG employees, if what you're saying is the case, I would expect their turnover rate to be dramatically higher because a lot of people are completely unwilling to tolerate these kinds of bosses regardless of how dangerous of a position they would be in if they just quit their job without any prospects of getting a new one. But LMG has a turnover rate if I think they said it was like 12% or something like that. When with an actually abusive boss, i would expect that turnover rate to be at least 35% usually closer to 50%
@@the_undead If expect that high of a turn-over rate in ANY business, you fundamentally dont understand how workplace and societal pressure work. Honestly, after some of the stories OGs like Luke and Taran tell about early LMG and their financial situations, I'm not surprised if they are a bit miserly and "cheap". Being destitute tends to ingrain a lot of that into your personality, and its really hard to let a lot of those habits go.
As an employee I enjoy going away from my usual task to do something else somewhere else as long as my boss acknowledges the time spent doing that other thing. It's fun and I enjoy doing off site stuff that are different. People just love complaining
I feel your frustration, Linus. I for one love the joke and always figured such content was scripted. I've also always been under the impression work for you at your company is a blast.
There is no way the people who work for you absolutely hate it... It's easy to see how much fun you and your team have working on projects. Everyone seems happy to be where they are professionally. Never doubted that.
Every time I have helped people "move" because I have a truck, I have showed up with my work truck and they say "grab a box and start putting things in it." smfh. Get your SH!t together BEFORE your friends show up to help you MOVE IT.
Helping people move can be fun but only if it's a ton of people, like more than is really needed. When a friend asks YOU. And ONLY you. That gets... Rough lol.
The storage company I used to work at, the CEO used to do exactly that. He'd regularly get the movers to move his stuff around and take stuff to the dump for him. Linus seems to be a nicer guy than him.
@@FoxDren Is it, though? If your job is "move stuff, get paid" and the CEO says "hey, guys I pay to move stuff, today you still get paid but the stuff you're moving happens to belong to me" I don't really see why that would be an issue.
@@Alucard-gt1zf they were paid (but they rely on tips to supliment their wage and he never tipped), but he never paid anything. He did a lot of stuff like this, and I wouldn't be surprised if the "free extras" he skimmed from the company was in the realm of 20k per year. Linus has explicitly stated previously that he tracks these kinds of benefits because at a certain point they're taxable (I think it was in a video about putting in electric car chargers at the office).

I know right sometimes I think Linus does the whole 5000 Intel upgrade series just to see how much stuff actually they take which i don't think he cares since I'm sure most of that stuff will never be used again anyways 😂
A comment I saw on another video, their boss would rather pay their employees than pay a moving team they don’t know. Also in the past, Linus has mentioned paying people for shots and then camera team etc. Yeah. Never had this worry.
Spot on. It's never appropriate for an employer or manager to ask their employees for something like helping moving. Doesn't matter that it was "purely optional." Doesn't matter that he paid them-especially since LMG almost certainly has some sort of "no moonlighting" policy. Look-is this super egregious? No. Is it one more piece of evidence of a company culture lacking in healthy boundaries? One where everyone was constantly crunching? where a female employee would be tasked with running the company's OnlyFans on the weekend? where the CEO would see _nothing wrong_ with pushing to have a business meeting with a female content creator at his hotel?
@@GSBarlevIf the employees were uncomfortable with the boundaries set by Linus and their contract, they would either not sign it or leave, which very few of them have. They don't need people speculating about what's appropriate because every work environment is different, ESPECIALLY in their line of work. Also can't speak for the onlyfans thing as this is the first I've heard of it, but the hotel meeting was cleaned up when they released documentation that proved that it was essentially a misunderstanding - Linus was busy in the day since he was at the hotel for other commitments, so although asking for them to come round at night/ the evening is strange when you consider his situation it was probably just the only option on his end. It's a pretty big leap from "can we meet in the evening because I busy all day" to "I think he wanted to SA me" Not trying to defend Linus too hard because there have been genuine reports of mistreatment, but most of the things you mentioned are either a complete non issue or provably false.
except it isn't actually a choice, what he, and tyhe idiots defending him in the comments, fails to understand is that their is an uneven power dynamic that means him asking may not infact be seen as asking as refusal may have negative implications down the line in terms of pay rises, promotions and training opertunities.

If everyone acted like this, as you claim, there would be NO exploitative work places, yet Google, Meta, Tesla, Amazon, exists. Yes, some people will leave an abusive job because they know they can get a better one, but most people stay because they think ALL jobs are exploitative, regardless of if its true. Please, for the love of god, educate yourself on the science of labor and socioeconomic structures
Wow, aged like a fine wine.....
You misspelled "milk"
@@GSBarlev have you heard of wine. And how good wine will be if it is older.
@@smasherlol351 yes, that was my comment. That this aged very poorly, unlike wine and very like milk.
@GSBarlev i think he means it aged like wine because he finds it funny. I do too.
I’ll help anyone move an entire mansion for an RTX 4090 when it comes out lol.
Dude I'd single handedly transport anything for one of the *20* series cards nevermind a 30 or 40
this didnt age well with the Madison situation
I have not seen any evidence to suggest that the claims Madison made or anything more than fabrications just to kick a man while he's down. If they were accurate and Madison had any meaningful evidence to support her claims every you don't pay unless we win lawyer in Canada would be lining up to take that case because winning that case could cover all their expenses for the next 12 months
@@the_undead wow someone loves the canadian that stole from America
Her word against theirs and there is zero evidence. If it were real it would have gone through the courts - which it didn't.
LMAO Linus playin his best Oprah, you get a laptop, you get a laptop, we all get a laptop.
That milk is so spoiled
Loved this during the stream LOL Can't get enough of this bit when it shows up in random videos.
I loved Luke's comment about the socks at 7:20, the passion, the drive, the sincerity. Make Luke some custom socks!
Now someone is gonna accuse you of bribing your employees with laptops to keep quiet 😅
I like the friendship you two have
Should totally have had a "Wait, you guys get paid?" scene by someone.
Luke being poor is the best joke that I hope will never go away (it prob wont looking at the Linus / Luke relationship)
I would happily be the slave wiping floors in lmg office and be kept captive in the server room
I dunno. I feel being kept in their server room would actually count as some form of torture. Imagine the sound being locked in there with all access closed off and everything running full tilt all day and night.
Ah u probably wont wanna be in that server room when it catches on fire...
That is pretty sad
You probably need to re assess a lot of your life
@@zm5668 joke went over your head.
@@tyrannicpuppy sounds nice
Love the video! Enjoy the repartee. Linus you have a great staff.
Everyone seems to have fun while working hard.
Well this aged badly
"If people don't like it here they are free to leave" No one whil ever see them
Got to say you guys are awesome.
Running in the background while doing some fpga shift.
Honestly, after some of the stories OGs like Luke and Taran tell about early LMG and their financial situations, I'm not surprised if they are a bit miserly and "cheap". Being destitute tends to ingrain a lot of that into your personality, and its really hard to let a lot of those habits go.
Lol
This aged soo well.....
Linus is only a monster to the tech he 'accidently' drops. To his employees, he is a scholar and a gentleman and a source of ongoing hilarity.
I've never heard a podcast so relaxing, so soothing. Rational and mature people just speaking.
"Look sad it will be funny for the audience!!!" I was a bit worried their boss forced them into doing this.
1:55 exactly my thoughts. Moving is fun as long it's not you that's moving.
Luke - 'As long as there is duel monitors on each end'
Linus - 'Theres whatever you want'
Luke - 'eyes up a 52 inch 4k quad display'
Linus - 'sweats'
To be fair, there is something fun about seeing how long you can make a failing laptop or car last.
When Linus says "in fairness" it is a sign he is about to say something slightly unfair
"it's funny when people HAVE to help someone move" - Way to go trying to make it sound optional 🤣
"Gary and the developers" sounds like a band and they totally need a music video
Had the same thought. Knew someone else would beat me to it
Every time I have helped people "move" because I have a truck, I have showed up with my work truck and they say "grab a box and start putting things in it." smfh. Get your SH!t together BEFORE your friends show up to help you MOVE IT.
I love how linus and luke can give each other shit bantering back and forth.
Helping people move can be fun but only if it's a ton of people, like more than is really needed. When a friend asks YOU. And ONLY you. That gets... Rough lol.
"they were told it was optional!"
"Ja mein fuhrer, of COURSE I would love to help you move house! Please don't have my family killed!"
You're alright Linus. It's been fun watching you grow up all these years!
The moving vlogs have been great with all the sassy sarcasm and jabs at Linus.
The storage company I used to work at, the CEO used to do exactly that. He'd regularly get the movers to move his stuff around and take stuff to the dump for him.
Linus seems to be a nicer guy than him.
Where they paid to do so? If so I really don't see the problem since its basically the same job except you're going to a skip instead of a warehouse
@@Alucard-gt1zf because it's an abuse of position and power.
The cost just came out of the company's budget, which means he was getting thousands of dollars of free labour every year that he didn't have to pay tax on.
It's the same reason why a CEO can't just roll up and take money from the till.
Linus is not a boss, he's a leader
he is always working alongside his team
even in the moving video... he took the thing on his back upstairs
I like the innovative approach of streaming / uploading internal meetings as a form of content. Gutsy
Of course you are. It's the basic definition of an employee. You keep part of the value that they generate through their work. The question is are they happy with the arrangement?
Yes but I would say Linus does it pretty ethically from all observable angles I have seen
The overly wide anticompete is not ethical imo.
@@gyroninjamodder that's just normal business things........you wouldn't expect the maker of the big mac to be able to start working for kfc and tell them the recipe would you? That's the whole point of anti competes
@@Alucard-gt1zf An NDA / other agreements make the recipe property of McDonalds. Also in the metaphor you would also be banned from coming up with a cuisine recipe at a high end restaurant or cooking at home for guests.
It would be reasonable to prevent them from making videos that compete directly with LMG such as a tech review on the same kinds of products LMG reviews. If an employee is streaming Minecraft it seems like a stretch to me to say that content is competing with LMG.
@@gyroninjamodder i think linus said their employees can stream and make content on their own. Just not tech stuff
The day I completed my apprenticeship I spent the week pressure washing my bosses pool deck and cleaning his gutters!
I love luke's laugh. Makes me smile :)
I just love the fact that I have the same laptop as Linus’s daily driver, but I didn’t pick it from his video. It was the only good one that Best Buy could get me in store at that time.
if your boss asks for your help..its NOT optional
If I was invited to Linus house after the move, I’ll clock in and listen to all his dad jokes.
Bosses asking to help move is coercion.
Can tell Linus is such a easy wind up and Luke's the perfect wind up merchant
5:03 Linus’ Strong Bad Email references get me every time.
Well this title didn't age well...
Aren't you worrier that Luke is gonna hurt his back carrying all those laptops you gave him? you're such a meanie
It's weird thinking about it, but Luke lived in Linus' house in much the same way Gavin lived in Geoff's house at Roosterteeth...
I love that people think he is abusive or a terrible boss that forces people to do things, but there are videos where he does cross the line in his mind and he apologizes because he feels bad. He knows where the line is for each person for the most part.
The only unrealistic thing about this video is Linus actually carrying those laptops without dropping 3 of them
I agree with Luke it’s so much fun helping people, moving yourself sucks.
imagine luke on ltx and everyone going to offer him their laptops.. HAHA
Evil Boss Linus: If you don't want to work here, you can just leave.
Linus has the same energy as the "I'm a people person! I work with people!" person in Office Space.
If I could legally migrate to Canada I'd apply to a LMG position... Working in the lab would be really cool!
ironically enough, i have a video recommended off this video call "How to Stop People From Taking Advantage of You"
Linus: Take a laptop, take 10 laptops
Also Linus: Why do my employees take stuff from the office home???
I know right
sometimes I think Linus does the whole 5000 Intel upgrade series just to see how much stuff actually they take
which i don't think he cares since I'm sure most of that stuff will never be used again anyways 😂
If you listen closely you can hear the banging of the enslaved interns in the basement
First you make your employees move you and now you're going to make Luke and the new guys walk up STAIRS! Worst boss ever!
A comment I saw on another video, their boss would rather pay their employees than pay a moving team they don’t know.
Also in the past, Linus has mentioned paying people for shots and then camera team etc. Yeah. Never had this worry.
What was that ending? Did the inflation bum then out like that or did something else happen?
Yes, he is abusing his power.
It's a pretty big leap from "can we meet in the evening because I busy all day" to "I think he wanted to SA me"
Not trying to defend Linus too hard because there have been genuine reports of mistreatment, but most of the things you mentioned are either a complete non issue or provably false.
I actually left a joking comment about this but knew that Linus probably paid them or gave them a choice. Linus even ordered lunch for them, how nice.
I do wanna say, in a lot of places, your boss may tell you something is optional... But it's really not.
@@rpm10k. if you're getting paid who gives a fuck?
except it isn't actually a choice, what he, and tyhe idiots defending him in the comments, fails to understand is that their is an uneven power dynamic that means him asking may not infact be seen as asking as refusal may have negative implications down the line in terms of pay rises, promotions and training opertunities.
@@FoxDren Why are you spamming everywhere bot? He is the boss, he pays their salaries. If the expertise of the job is similar why not? Logistics department did the moving job. If a cameraman or editor was made to do that job then ur argument is valid. Spamming everywhere won't help.
Luck does not have a laptop, this is intentional, every employee that had Intel Tech upgrade had at home parts or computers from office, Luce could literally walk to logistics and take any laptop for his liking, but chose not to, probably because it is a pine in the butt to migrate from one machine to another
