Funny company Xmas party story... I used to work for a local retail music/entertainment chain distribution center. The one year we had a guy win concert tickets to a band on the tail end of their popularity. He loudly proclaimed that he didn't want them. President of the company said "Look, you can take the tickets and try and trade with someone, or you can have the broken microwave in the kitchen." "Microwave?!?! I've never had a microwave! I'll take that!" He did. He was never seen again. I can only imagine the browbeating he took when he got it home and that he was too embarrassed to come back to work for us.
The real question here is, how f-ing good is Linus's memory that he knows which stuff is from work and what's not? That's impressive. Or is it really as simple as; "I know how much this person makes, their personality, and what they'd spend money on, and this $100 BS cable we tested and debunked isn't something they'd go out to buy themselves."
I used to work for Argos in England, now I've got about 500 of those little pens they had. Just get home and find one in my pocket and forget to take it back to work. 😁
you don't need to wait for Luke to be chosen for an upgrade. Just have a Channel Super Fun video Dennis walk through his house "What has Luke stolen"... or even make it a game, "we found this, did Luke steal it or Dennis? (or both?)"
Sadly in many places, it is just such a very convenient and smart thing to do, even if you don't want to do it. Like, I got all my PCs, private mobile and a bunch of other stuff (even a fridge last year) through 'company scrip' for the past 10ish years, because the company can procure those items tax free, and get additional deals by making bulk order from a wholesaler, and as such, can offer the items to the employees with 30-50% cheaper than you could buy that specific item from a retailer. Cheaper for the company to pay employees this way, cheaper for the worker to buy items they would buy anyway, only their range of choices is more limited by it.
Managing assets in a corporate environment has its gray areas. Things you don't tag are typically things you're not overly concerned about getting back because it's not worth the overhead to maintain the record. Old hardware is an interesting one. Where I work, we have an unwritten policy where old hardware that cannot be repurposed for anything is available for people to take home. It's usually stuff out of warranty or software support, but still very useful. You really have to have something like this in place, official or otherwise, because if not, the storage room becomes a laptop and server graveyard.
I mean, every company has this category in their balance sheet for "unaccounted" stuff, where the "lost" stuff is put and given that most of the things taken by them are consumer grade hardware which I doubt would account even for the cost of two or maybe three of their cinematic professional 8k cameras, and I mean all the stuff taken, the impact on the unaccounted category in the balance sheet should be small, even smaller than legitimate more expensive stuff lost in actual work related operations.
i had the same thing when i worked at small startups, noone really cared because it was a small bunch of us and it would we would all understand it's owned by the company.

Eh, most people take something from work. A lot of times its unused old inventory or stupid regulations where they would toss it in the container instead of giving it away.
