@@FactsVerse no I never did, although his father spent a lot of time around my Grandmother( his Aunt). I could sit and listen to his stories about his famous son for hours.
Patton stands as a testament too a two great men, one a great, if not the greatest general in US history and a great actor. George c Scott was born to play Patton.
Someone, and a great one too, from Hollywood who has character? You hardly ever see that anymore! A thousand accolades sir. More people should stand up for their beliefs and not merely pontificate. Thank you Mr. Scott. Ken
My favorite George C Scott movie, without a doubt: PATTON. But let me say this, he is excellent in virtually everything he does. WHen you start thinking of them, it’s easy to keep replacing your thoughts. Dr Strangelove was quite something. He made that movie too. And there are so many others that would not have been the same without him. But, in the final analysis: (1) PATTON then, a more distant second, Dr Strangelove.
George Scott was awesome in “Patton.” Great movie! There aren’t any great movies like these in the 21st century. Scott is a great actor. Many great performances. Many many wonderful and accomplished actors in Scott’s era. Sadly, many have hit the dusty trail, like Sean Connery, Charles Heston, Gregory Peck, Richard Burton, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Marlon Brando, Paul Newman, Humphrey Bogart, and many many more! These were “genuine “ actors. Many great female actresses also. The list is endless. Sure miss them all. Price of movie tickets have gone up, but the quality of the actors have not. Today’s movies are focused on visual affects, noise, violence. No real acting, no plot, nothing great to remember when a person walks out of the theatre. No lasting experience. Sad.
It’s strange, because I think his performance in Dr. Strangelove was one of the best in that film. Peter Sellers was great, but Scott and Slim Pickins made the movie for me.
Personally I am not a fan of awards although I have received several during my working career. Because I was relatively young, I succumbed to peer pressure to accept those awards. In time, I came to realize that it is a very personal choice and that many people see getting an award as validation of their work. For me, I do understand it although I never felt that need. Scott had a deep conviction on the subject and stood by it. I say bravo for standing up for his principles regardless of how others viewed it.
I never miss a chance to watch Patton. I practically memorized every line. Patton just never gets too old. I can't think of any other actor who could have played Patton better. RIP Patton and Scott.
@@FactsVerse several, one of my favorites is when he is standing in the street shooting at the German plane strafing the town. Another where he gets out and directs traffic. And when he tells the Chaplain to write a prayer for good weather at the Battle of the Bulge.
George Scott played more Patton than Patton himself in our opinion! What an honor to be alive and to have watched this great film when it came out: And I have probably watched it at least 40 times at least since. It may sound crazy but that is how much the movie- and his portrayal affected me! And every time is like I have never seen it before, which is really saying something!
You're very right to a great extent. Scott's performance as the most controversial battlefield commander of WW2 did more to uplift Patton's image from a legend of armored warfare to a larger than life mythical hero in American culture than Patton's exploits during his 4 decade long career with the US Army could.
Lee Marvin was a Marine and shot in the lower back at Saipan. He accepted. By the way his work in the wild one was pretty close to how Lee lived his life. Rode the crap out of the motorbikes. As a side note, he was given the script for "Patton" and passed on it. He felt it glorified war.
In his place I likely would have done exactly what he did. I offer that in my life I have never watched the Oscars, Golden globes, or any other award shows to back my point.
George C. Scott is one of the few actor or actresses that are NOT full of themselves. He is excellent in all of his parts and will always be remembered by me for his roles!
Good for him, it puts him in good company with Marlon Brando, although Brando’s reasons for refusing an Oscar for The Godfather a couple of years later in regards to the Hollywood portrayal of Native Americans was completely different from Scott’s complete contempt for the Oscars altogether.
Facts Verse It’s a three way tie between Dr Strangelove and Patton and A Christmas Carol for me, although he was always unforgettable in anything he was in even as a supporting player.
Other than archival footages and books, many of us haven't seen or experienced General George S. Patton Jr to compare George C. Scott with him. Nevertheless, George C. Scott put up a superb and charismatic performance in dramatizing the General. He will always be remembered in the annals of cinematic history as the man who best portrayed Patton!
If you don't have integrity, you don't have anything. Sadly this country doesn't have any integrity left. I'm glad George didn't live to see it. Rest in peace Mr. Scott.
Scott was a very complicated man. His female companions will verify this. He should have accepted the award because he was clearly the best in that year and he would have had even more of a platform to affect changes in a system that he found fault with. Great actor, if he and Rod Steiger ever did a movie together I would have loved to have seen it. The intensity would have been unbelievable.
This is the the best movie ever and I respect geroge Scott for the best performance ever in this classic movie I'm proud of him and proud to be American watching him this is the best of all times
George C. Scott was supposed to be an absolutely horrible man! Just accept the award modestly and know that it really doesn't mean too much. It was hip in the 60's and 70's not to show up at the awards show. But, I think that it was merely bad manners to boycott it.

I know it is just a film and an interpretation of a real character, it's not an impression of impersonation of Gen Patton but it would have been more realistic and true to the man to hear that high squeaky voice of his rather than the deep, gruff be voice of GV Scott.
@@FactsVerse it has it's place in the pantheon of warfilms. I was more impressed as a young boy but it hasn't really stood the test of time. The 60s and 70s we're difficult for the US and I think the film has to be seen against this backdrop. Patton for the patriot view and Kelly's hero's for the hippy generation. It was epic in a pre digital age but lacked accuracy in the kit department and a typically simplistic view of a complicated personality. For these reasons I'd have to give it a 6/10. If I was looking through American eyes I'd probably give it a little more.
...further I would add that without G C Scott in the lead the film wouldn't have had the impact it did. Karl Malden did an excellent job as (an incredibly young looking) Omar Bradley. One wonders if the real O N Bradley had as much personality as depicted by K Malden.
Wait, so “to not recognize GCS in his role as Patton, would be a disrespect to the military”!? WTF! Putting aside the great performance, GCS had to win!? Am I hearing this correctly? So he couldn’t be snubbed by the Academy, because of patriotism!?
From what I understand about George c scott, Scott was a liberal that detested what Patton stood for and tried to portray Patton in a light that was unflattering. This only made Patton more influential to conservatives. Hollywood doesn't like giving credit to MacAuther or Patton that they deserve.
From your commentary about Scott's approach to playing Patton, it sounds as if Scott may have been an admirer of Patton's. For some reason, I always assumed this was not the case, as surely, Scott would be considerably more left-wing in politics than Patton.
Scott's glorification of the mass murdering US and their military hero Patton is despicable. Perhaps he knew, somewhere deep inside he did not talk about, this clear fact.
