2:12 This scene always hits me hard. One minute a man is alive and the next minute, he's dead, lying alone in a snowy field thousands of miles from home. His friends and family will never see him again. He didn't want to fight and he didn't want to die, but he did, anyway. And now the other men in his company will go on to die or to kill. It just all seems so wasteful, sad, and useless.

General Patton, at the end of the day, was quite the asshole to his soldiers. In North Africa in the early days of the war especially, Patton was feared and looked at with disdain by his own men. Does that mean he wasn’t a brilliant tactical mind? Not at all, of course he was that. And of course the enemy recognized him as such and feared him. But to say Patton’s soldiers loved him would be far from accurate. It begs the age old question: is it better to be feared than loved?

Patton (as Schaffner's film shows elsewhere) was a religious transcendentalist who believed in God and in reincarnation. He was also a showman who knew the value of 'faith' in motivating his troops. So try to take a mature view of this. The film clip asks us to think about paradoxes and evil and faith. This is Franklin Schaffner, not DeMille! Stop polarising! Right. God pardons iniquity, and he understands i believe, that not all of us should be brought down with those who are steering the car in the wrong direction. Look to the time in which God brought judgement upon Sodom and Gomorrah. He allowed Abraham and the righteous to leave and live before the city was destroyed. "Satan" as a concept is all around us, tempting us into self-destruction and sin. Whether it be entertainment, politics, or other methods of self-indulgence, we are tempted into it to subdue us and steer us away from the path of righteousness. Those who live righteous life and resist "Satan", believers or not, will be shown the light at the end of their test on Earth and granted eternal life, wealth, and prosperity in the hearth and Kingdom of the all-mighty God, Heaven. It is hard with all of the temptations on Earth, but we need to realize that there is something much greater awaiting us that we cannot even comprehend.

He said that war will make you behave like an animal and do things you wouldn't even think of doing in civilian life. He told me one story where he saw an American and German soldier engaged in hand-to-hand combat. My uncle took out his pistol, went up behind the German soldier, put the pistol to his head and blew his brains out. My uncle said he didn't even hesitate or flinch or feel anything while doing it but that after the war he could hardly believe he did such a thing.

War is cruel. A war fought humanely is an oxymoron.

forgive the ignorance but it makes me wonder if patton's forces ever encountered winters and easy company of the 101st and helped em out,if they did they should cover it like they did band of brothers and do a sequel series.

As a matter of fact, Patton's forces were the ones that broke through the encirclement around Bastogne and relieved the 101st.

Thats why the meetimg before the event. They couldnt afford to loose more of the line troops like that. Plus the ss panzer division under sep dietrich was one of the g1ermans more rutherless and murderous divisions there
The meeting is telling. Only Patton was certainhe and his men could and would do it. Je knew it jad to be done and that it was the turning point that would win or loose the war. None of the others had the sense of purpose or desire to do what had to be done.
History the tells the story with God on his side and that of his divisions the sid thw impossible and wemt into battle and beat the german s hands down. Pattons sense of history and his place in it won him the day and the battle. In two days he fought and won two major battles this in my book makes the greatest II world war general as no others did that

@@kevinklingner3098 The SS Panzer Divisions were not facing Patton, they were on the north shoulder facing 99th Infantry, 2nd Infantry, 82nd Airborne, and 7th Armored Divisions. Patton was facing the German 7th Army with minimal armored units.
