I've been a little like that recently as well. I think im behind on quite a few of my things this year and ive had some casualties. Sometimes i just sit and listen to the birds and the bees and it makes a difference. The allotment is good for that.

My grandad describes this feeling as ‘going offs coming on’ and it’s kind of that ‘meh’ feeling but not really having a reason for it. The allotment and green spaces can be a real healer , even weeding for an hour gives you that much needed vitamin d😅 looking great regardless, keep plodding on 🎉

I reckon a lot of people have been having that 'not feeling it' emotion at times this year. I took on a second plot this year right next to mine and have often felt like an unpaid arable farmer! It's been pretty full on. This week I had that feeling of wanting the season to come to an end, to feel that satisfaction of putting beds to rest, for the commitment to ease somewhat. However, come December I know I'll start feeling an impatience for the start of spring to come along and will experience a growing enthusiasm for the new season ahead.

My allotment has been a life saver for me. I have bipolar disorder and make a point of going there daily unless I'm at deaths door. I'm lucky to live a 5 min walk from my home. My problem is I grow lots of beautiful food, but don't cook since I've been single. Seems a waste, but i still love it. It's nice to be greeted every day by the fox and pair of collared doves I feed too😊

Thank you for sharing your ups and downs. They do happen and I can see-saw between massive enthusiasm and utter despair at the garden, especially this year. I do struggle with SAD and it does feel like it has gone on past winter and spring this year. So lack of sunlight certainly triggers these low feelings and being indoors at a computer all day for me anyway, so maybe for you too. Especially if work is very busy and stressful it can trigger the low mood.
Remember being in nature and outside even if you just go wander around the allotment without the to do list in hand will help even if it is a struggle to get motivated. By the way this is all advise I need to follow too haha I am not very good at doing this but boy it feels better just going out and wandering about in my garden listening to the birds etc.
I could actually see your demeanor change through out your video as you spoke with pride about all the things that you have achieved. 🥰🤗

One of the reasons I watch your channel is because it is true life and I can empathise far more with your successes and failures than 'Gardeners World' or its ilk.. I bet you noticed whilst editing this how much happier you felt by the end of the video. My gardening life is full of triumphs and probably more disasters. My triumphs this year include my garlic, onions and particularly my spring onions which I finally got to grow. I'm trying to forget yesterday's lowlight when I discovered the best truss of beefsteak tomatoes I've ever grown on the greenhouse floor after they'd snapped off the main stem due to lack of support... I think if I were you I'd keep in mind that if gardening was a sport you'd have nearly 14.5 thousand spectators cheering you on. Accrington Stanloy manage an average attendance of less than 3 thousand 😁 Imagine the roar of the crowd as you pan over to those sweet peas!

    Hi JB
Your plot is looking amazing a big pat on the back
    - I think there is a big difference to being a bit fed up, lacking in enthusiasm, a bit, overwhelmed by life/commitments, lack of energy and depression
    - be kinder to ourselves, give ourselves a break, accept we will have these feeling and know that they will pass
    - embrace nature and it's ability to help us heal ourselves
    - always remember that tomorrow is another day
I love watching your videos and the honesty you show😊
and sometimes pressure we put on ourselves

  • @magpie1492
    @magpie1492 Місяць тому +1

It's OK. A lot of us can understand how you feel because if we were honest, we have days like that too.
Throw in a tough time at work and it all becomes a bit much.
Sometimes the ONLY job I get done is to water what absolutely needs it, no weeding, tomato cares, harvesting, tidying. All I want to do is go home and flop with a cup of tea and be left alone in the quiet!
And I don't have the added pressure of a UA-cam channel, Potty Mouth broadcasts, all of which you do freely for us, thankyou.
Something will always lift your mood and you will want to venture back out to the plot and all of a sudden your mojo is back. For me, it's usually popping along to pick something for a recipe and then I start to see what else can be eaten 😅.
Please don't beat yourself up, we do get it. If you need to take a break from the constant eyes on from us, then do. You are a precious human being, dear to so many of us, so please take the best care of yourself x

I'm in awe of anybody who has the discipline to film their gardening/veg work, as both reaquire tremendous commitment and time. Maybe when you feel like that just reflect and enjoy nature at work. (bumblebees in my nasturtiums make me particularly happy). Anticipation is a good motivstor: planning, sowing etc. but general maintainamce can feel a bit unrewarding at times!

I really wish First Tunnels did double sliding tracks so you could have two sets of doors. I’ve debated making separate doors to swap for summer, but then it was 7.8° overnight last night, so that wouldn’t would.
Love your door but just can’t bring myself to remove the convenience of the sliding doors, given it was such an expensive additional cost to upgrade to.
It’s quite a weird feeling this time of year. We are waiting for harvests, so no run of the sowing but there’s a constant need for weeding. They seem to be taking over.
Your plots are really looking fabulous. You’ve made so many changes since last year. Looking fab. ❤

Oh, I've been having that same sort of season, JB. The weather doesn't cooperate, the weeds are undaunted no matter how ferociously I attack them, a bunch of Swiss chard seedlings just up and died for no good reason that I could perceive.... Swiss chard! I mean, come on, now. Swiss chard, my never-fail absolutely ultra-reliable garden green, and they didn't even make it out of the starting modules!
American psychologist B. F. Skinner stated, if I'm not mistaken in his book Walden Two about some experiments he was conducting and which quite perversely were not giving him the results he'd anticipated, that he wanted to shout at the subjects, "Behave, damn you!" Most unscientific, of course.
For me it's been a case of more being in love with the idea of a garden than actually getting out into a garden and doing the gardening. I mean, these things do have to be done, but having a slightly more enthusiastic anticipation for the results would make the doing less arduous. Less *onerous.*
Much gardening love from Northeast Ohio, U.S.A.! 😊💚💚💚💚💚😊

Little tip the shorter grass is kept the slower it grows the roots grow to support the long grass. Also the shorter grass the faster it is to cut it. It takes me 10 minutes to trim the whole of my allotment short. But it takes an hour if it’s long. Good subject for a video.

Heya JB, it may help if you let your potatoes partially 'cure' for a bit after harvesting, so don't use them straight away, but they should develop thicker skins if left for a while. They also need a much shorter cooking time than the ones you get from shops that have been cured and stored for yonks. But also, definitely recommend getting a steamer if you don't already have, rather than boiling them. It's so much better in my opinion, and steaming them also makes for a better mash too :D Yum

It's sounding like you need a holiday in your head. When was the last time you just stopped and sat and enjoyed what you have created? Sometimes we're too busy pulling the weeds to smell the roses.

Could try and find someone who would be willing to edit your videos for you? Maybe for college projects or their own portfolio? That could free up a lot of time for you. Just a thought 😊

Just at the start of the video, so not sure if you come to this conclusion yourself, but you've been so overworked recently JB! I've been noticing on Potty Mouth you saying that you're working a huge number of hours, you probably don't have time for leisure. Look after yourself and make sure you don't completely burn out

maybe try not to set as many tasks for yourself. it sounds like your making the allotment feel more like a job than a hobby. So instead just figure out what your going to do when you get there rather than making yourself worry about all the possible tasks you need to do, when your not there? I wouldn't want to go to an allotment when I have a long list of tasks to do either.
