  • Between her role on 'The Big Bang Theory' and a degree in neuroscience, Mayim Bialik is as qualified as anyone to diagnosis Stephen as 'nerd' or 'geek.'

      ...are you *sure* he challenged her? I mostly just saw him interjecting a lot of mindless banter in between obvious attempts at humour as he bailed himself out of topics that he'd made too awkward to continue with, then giving her shamefully weak prompts for the next topic which she still managed to expound eloquently upon. The only way I'll concede that he's "challenging" her is by forcing her to feel awkward and switching the topic every few seconds to see how quickly she could handle rapid-fire complex topics (and stupid questions) without getting flustered.

      @Simon Belanger Yeah, I think Mayim stymied him more than once but being the clever person that Colbert is, he held his own....if barely, especially the obviously clumsy segue to mention her book at the end. But still, all and all, it was a fun exchange to watch.

      She insulted Stephen with her stupid characterisation of the "geek". She assumed there is no intellect on Phantasy and by saying that she proves how uncultured and stupid scientists are.

    • @QuirksOfTay
      @QuirksOfTay 6 років тому +51

      Are you serious? It didn't seem like that at all. I don't think Mayim meant to imply that 'geeks' aren't smart - she just said that they aren't necessarily geniuses like in TBBT. Also, I hope you understand the irony in your last statement, especially since Mayim is an actress as well as a scientist, so she is obviously 'cultured' when it comes to media - she even said she likes LOTR. From the way she described it I think she would classify herself as both a 'nerd' and a 'geek', and would think neither are bad or weird.

      I am under the impression that expertise plays a role in these definitions. In other words, you might like math or science, but until you excel or are accomplished, you are neither a geek nor a nerd.

      Nope, expertise shows how 'good' you are, not if you are. Eg: you can be a baseball fan...or you can have all the stats memorized. Just levels of fan. Unfortunately, I have met ignorant nerds and geeks...I have also met a couple which made me feel weak. Just levels of knowledge.

    Geek: May the force be with you.
    Nerd: May the force be an influence on a body or system, producing or tending to produce a change in movement or in shape or other effects.
    Basically a geek is obsessed with something fictional like Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, His Dark Materials, The Hunger Games, etc. or with something close to fiction, like a good book that is actually realistic.
    A nerd is someone who is obsessed with the real world, such as history, math, science, literature, even the art of dancing. As long as you are obsessed. E.g. a dancer may not qualify as a nerd, but if you look up facts about types of dances, memorize moves, find out interesting things, physics, history of a certain dance type, etc., you are a nerd.

    One of the best piece of interview I have ever seen. Short, but kept me glued to the screen and smiling till the end. She's so brilliant as actress and as an academic, proving you can do both. I hope some day such women will be on the pedestal and shown as an example, instead of celebrities with zero talent and IQ. This is the essence of XXI century's woman.

    She has pretty much the same description of nerd vs. geek as I do. I always said that a nerd will talk for hours about the science behind a sci fi show, while a geek will talk for hours about the character motivations and metaphors of their favorite sci fi show. Of course there is a lot of crossover.

    It's so sad to see all these negative comments about her appearance (I think she's beautiful, by the way). Yes, appearance will always be an important aspect of a person, but she is so much more than that!! She is witty, obviously intelligent, talented, and completely well-rounded as well. Yes, I know we all have freedom of speech, but how constructive is it really to just harp on such a strong woman's looks based on our preference?
    Mayim, I think you are amazing.
