Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

Why buy a book for $5 when you can make one for reasonable price of $400
Ya but $5 is a whole lot cheaper than $400
If I hadn't been able to reuse the extra cotton, hemp, and leather from the suit; having to collect those again would have made the book cost an extra $1400. Good thing I kept some extras.
How To Make Everything you coild have got cotten from old tshirts as well. also nylon is used to make paper as well, the process is the same as with the cotten.
That is a good idea chris, but HTME makes things from scratch, not scrap.
MaterializedBeef Bit Rude 🙄
How To Make Everything iv made homemade ink that was made from fruit juice it smells im sure alot better than yours lol
Ellie Davies It's not rude,he was just saying
$400? That must be how college textbooks are made...
son0of0the0beast lol
lmao, now I'm imagining a big church full of monks writing and binding 'Math 101'
Why can't you get college books on your tablet : (?
@@aoeu256 what do you want to do, put those people out of business? you dumb fucker, stop it!
@@JamieAllen1977 lol
WHY DID YOU CLOSE THE BOOK WITH FRESH INK IN IT?
MasterP48HD I screamed when he did that
I got freaked out when he did that too
He said the ink was too dry
I am so glad I'm not alone!
Exactly my thoughts!
A more effective way to make ink would be to use tree sap (Arabic gum I think it's called) it's sticky and has the added benefit of not smelling like a carcass, it's used here in North Africa and is pretty affective
I just use pencils but that’s just me
Why not just sketch yourself a picture of a freak book
I'm really in love with the book binder's voice, it's really soothing and clear.
Fooly Cooly the old man seems really sweet and nice
I'm surprised you're not using the scene with the page in the printing press that says "How To Make Everything" as part of your opening sequence.
xKatjaxPurrsx yeah that would be cool
No it would be misleading
xKatjaxPurrsx I’m the hundredth like
I just watched the book making series from front to back in one go, and I wanted to say that I really admire the work you put into these projects. I took a book binding class once, and it took us 2 days to make our book, just the binding process. Our modern society makes everything acessible so easily that one forgets just how complex it is to make everyday objects. So thank you for showing us the art behind "banalities" :)
One of the more interesting series on UA-cam,which deserves a lot more subscribers. Glad I found this channel.
Is it just me, or does that guy have a really soothing voice?
i could listen to him the whole day, its also very interesting what he said about binding & calligrafy :)
Nah he has a really boring voice. Like, if you would have a conversation with him he would be boring to talk to lol
oh man when you sniffed that jar, hardest i've laughed all year
$400.. now that is reasonable!
almost as cheap as the apple book ^.^
What a bargain
It is cheaper than some college books
When you sniffed the ink I think I died 😂 great job though👍🏼
+Jade Halley I think he died a little too.
Those times when you close a book onto wet ink.
I like ur profile pic its my favorite anime :p
This guy TOTALLY needs more subs
I don’t know how I stumbled onto your channel, but I loved this series and you have a new subscriber! You should be past the million mark by now
Yay top 222 comments. Love this video. Love this series. Best to you and your family. Happy Sunday.
Hey Andy, I just wanted to say I love your videos and keep up the good work
I love books and reading, but never did I imagine how the books I love to read were made, this was eye opening.
You forgot to dust your ink with ash or charcoal dust.... They used that to help it dry quicker, maybe even to darken it?
you can make ink from walnut husks should you want a more animal friendly ink type. it's also darker. either way this experience has been very educational I'm glad I found your channel!
I love your videos. Keep ut the good work Andy.
Thanks Lukas
Too bad that your ink didn't work out so great. Maybe you should have found someone who makes ink? Also, you forgot to write in your book with an angled desk :)
A simple walnut ink is pretty easy to make. Or just using walnut instead of charcoal as the dye in the glue.
If you didn't know, Japanese ink is made my grinding it off an ink block
@@chickentikka4383 yes but how is the ink block made?
Should have just hunted a squid and gotten its ink
Wow what a quality !!!
Colleges are gonna start playing this on repeat in the book store
When you said you went through 5000 years of book making to make this book, I thought that the book itself looked to be that age. Still, it’s amazing what a little ingenuity and some patience can yield.
Andy is the book version of bob ross. His voice is so soothing
Awesome! I love this serie! :D
why not try going fishing for squid ink
We really wanted to, but there aren't a lot of places to fish for squid in Minnesota and we didn't have the resources to travel to the ocean for this one. Hopefully once we get more support on Patreon we can make more cross country adventures (www.patreon.come/htme)
How To Make Everything have you considered making Iron Gall Ink? Or perhaps Carbon Ink? From the early medieval Era, the recipes are fairly simple, and don't smell like animal carcass, I make it about once a month, in a bulk batch. Fairly cheap too. It also has great definition and writes much more clearly than fat-based Inks. I would be happy to send you my recipes if you are interested. Also look into the north Bennett street school here in Boston MA. They offer bookbinding, silversmithing, jewelry making, Violin making, and fine furniture making. I went there for many years and studied a wide array of trades, that I still use everyday! I feel it might fascinate you as you seen naturally inquisitive.
What City are you in? I might know of one. (I happen to be in the business of connecting artistic social circles, so I might know one or two places you can go!)
How To Make Everything THERE ARE SQUID IN MINNESOTA?!?!?
Yay the finale!
This really made me appreciate books even more. Isn't it amazing, that after several centuries of technological development, bound book is still the most functional form of text based information?
awesome episode
Would the carbon black thing for making eyeliner work well for thicker ink?
Nice vid.
An effective way of getting of the smell of the ink is to simply let the ink dry and turn into a block. From there you can pour water onto a stone and grind the block into the water, only using as much as you need
Great series. Walnut husk makes an excellent brown ink. Not sure what era it comes from though.
I love how he uses every thing natural that he's taken from nature
If the apocalypse ever breaks out I’m living with you and primitive technology
Dr Deutschland Better invent a teleported between Minnesota and Australia then...
Love the video so I tried to bind a book and it's hard
I now know how to make a book of shadows from scratch just like Andy’s.
Flippin awsome
love how in the end it looks like he just filmed it in a library
i would have so liked to see ink made from berries
but i still enjoyed watching :)
I wonder if ironing the sheets would of made them strait, I ironed paper (sandwiched between two other pieces) when I did paper Marbling
+Gold_Two the main pages that are very wrinkled are the parchment pages, which probably won't respond well to an iron and may even create an unpleasant smell since it's animal hide. There might be other ways to help parchment relax, probably some chemical treatments but we wanted to keep it natural. But the cotton and hemp paper could be ironed for sure.
+How To Make Everything Thanks for replying and answering my question
Should have ground the soot in the ink finer. Even lampblack, which is fairly fine soot, still needs to be smoothed out to make the best ink.
Nice 🙌🏼
for the ink, you simply put the charcoal in a plastic jar with some steel balls and then shake it until it's crushed into a really fine powder
Oh man. I would like to work in the traditional way, instead working on a hi-tech offset print machine. The videos ' How to make everything: Book' were awesome. Self made things are something special, aren't they? =)
Thumbs up for Out of Their Minds by Simak on the bookshelf!
I ve made my own book just not from scratch but I binded it with a Copic stich and a leopard print fabric card board gover
Andy, do that, Andy I recommend that, Andy...Andy... Andy 😂😂😂
I use a similar method to bind my leather journals
Holy Christ, the punchline of this video is the best.
When he smelled the ink 😂😂I died hahahaha
You did not let that dry long enough before closing it, I'd like to see what the page across from the one you wrote on looks like.
that guy got a bob ross vibe when he started explaining how to bind the book with the thread
400?! Wow. Was the most expensive part the parchment and leather?
I had to do bookbinding for a class project once. Buying th epaper and tools cost nearly $70
Just mix soot, bone meal and honey with water until the desired tone and consistency is reached
You could've used an inkstone and ground up charcoal and water on it
I'm doing this for my history class, and say it was from
The old days. Lol
3:40 But first a good high for the rest of the video =)
Is it just me or does it sound like they made cuts in between or even during sentences? I onl heard it in this video and the previous video.
I do appreciate the effort that is put in the series, dont get me wrong.
I think it's because his microphone cut out so they had to use the cameras microphone
Good catch! Yes we had to edit Dennis quite a bit to keep the video moving. With UA-cam its important to keep the videos short to retain audiences and that is what we strive to do when we can without sacrificing the content.
DID YOU MAKE THAT GLASS JAR ANDY?!
I like to bind my notebooks as Coptic-style books...
Andy, when you calculate the cost, does it include the lessons you get from the people you visit and the machines and such you use at their stores? Or is it just the resource costs?
+Isac Andersson I'm not sure if he counts those things, but apart from the materials he does count the hours it took him; paying himself minimum wage.
Help from the experts is not included as a cost to the final product. It is purely based on time spent on the project if Andy were getting paid minimum wage and expenses related to travel or buying/renting items to attain the product (i.e. renting a boat to get sea water to make sea salt)
+How To Make Everything That' e.g., not i.e.
i.e. means "that is" or "more specifically". e.g. means "for example"
Keep up the good work HTME!
How To Make Everything okey thanks for the response!
When he writes "Andy" it reminds me of Toy Story when Andy wrote his name on the bottom of all his toys' feet.
Maybe I am missing something, but is there a video that shows the making of the ink?
We did it in Pencil and Brush ua-cam.com/video/38v7AVTZpMw/v-deo.html we will be doing future videos where we make oak gall ink and squid ink.
Denis is like the book maker of Bob Ross
why does andys mic always sound shit in most vids but everyone helping is crystal clear no echo
nice
Why in the world have I watched this whole series, I’m not planning on making some paper or a quill how did I get here😑😂
I know it would add alot of work but I would like more detailed videos for all your videos your channel is based on making things and the more detailed the better
The title “f the books should be how to make the book your reading right now explaining how to make the book
Is it just me or does the book look like a death note??
I said book of shadows.
oh no XD for ink its always best to grind the coal between stones extremely fine and then mix it with a small amount of liquid. your chunks where too thick so it didnt let a lot of color through
4:58 looks like the necronomicon from the evil dead^^,
Why Reid you start writing in the middle of the book?
maybe adding oil for the ink could work to make it thicker and alcohol to make it smell better... maybe
Why didnt you just use pokeweed for the ink?
I think you should sell this stuff on ebay they are cool and you can make up for the spendings
Andy's story.
This guy just made the Necronomicon.
boy when he opened that ink and smelled, whew, i could smell it through the computer
I hope this man passes on his craft.
That’s some toy story writing right there
I swear to god that old guy is the voice of Garfield
That'll teach you to sniff things. lol
Is it me or did the book in the end look like Tom Riddle's diary from Harry Potter?
primitive diary, so when you are lost your corpses can let a good mystery easter egg(?
Damn I wish I had the time money and resources to do the things he does
Who else got anxiety seeing him close the book on still drying ink?
400 DOLLAS
OH MAW GAWD
well that explains his hard work anyway
WACH 3:40- 4:05 we're the mistake
You really should have ground up the coal more finely using a mortar
Awesome but you could have used ink from berries which wouldn't stink...
You need to put the book at an angle that's why the quill writing turned out weird
You should've used blood as ink
Why did you smell the ink? Why close the book with fresh ink?
Book Bidding Home work Done
