@@BexMcInulty And there are also way more involved ways . . . the raised hubs on this example are, for instance, a decorative stand-in for the appearance of a book sewn on cords and attached to split boards. As a craft, this sort of bookbinding is all but gone. As an art, however, many of the methods will survive -- with a much smaller clientele and higher prices!
The most awesome part of this clip is that some people are still preserving this beautiful craft & art to this generation...and may be the following generation..hats off to the team!
I love my maths and physics and electronics textbooks, they are my friends. I found your channel, so that I can learn bookbinding techniques and repair my old books and ones I purchase online. Bookbinding is such a beautiful trade to watch when done by Artisans.
Now I understand why the binding of valuable books in leather with golden letters never can be done automatically by machines, and why this costs a bit, and why some editions are limited. Very good and instructive video. Thank you. Regards from Germany.
I'm just watching your spot on Alan Titchmarsh and had to say how much I enjoyed it. My mum was a bookbinder, seeing all the old tools being used took me right back to my childhood watching her as she sewed books making them good again. She also used to work on the big bank ledgers, so many happy memories and I feel very proud of the amazing work she did.
I accidentally landed here and couldn't stop watching this video! Mesmerizing and yes me too, I'd love an opportunity to apprentice to this sort of craftsmanship.
I do not know what to say. The work is beautiful, a true work of art. Impressed with the perfection of it all. I am a student of restoration and I intend to specialize in this area. Thank you very much for the teaching.
I was a letterpress printer/compositor in a small/medium jobbing shop in the North East of England. I have never seen the end result of finished print made into a book. This is most absorbing and thoroughly entertaining, thank you for sharing.
FASCINATING!! Utterly brilliant, and spell “binding” if you will. This is such a beautiful art, and the history alone just makes me admire your skill even more so. I am so grateful to know that you will keep this tradition alive and well. I would have loved to apprentice there with you. I am certain that this would have been a very interesting and fulfilling job. Warm regards, from Canada eh!
Great video. My father was a hand finisher. Always wanted to follow in his footsteps but by the time I started my apprenticeship it had all became mechanised. What I would give to learn this. I'd work for free.
The Chelsea bindery is more meticulous than most binderies, and their prices reflect their devotion to the craft. Some of the books for sale on their web site -- classic books rebound in leather -- are priced in thousands of dollars. Very few are available for less than $1000. Of course, the price is directly related to the quality of the leather chosen and the amount of tooling ordered for the cover. Which is why a sixty year old leather book with fine tooling that sells for, say, $300, cannot be replicated today for twice that amount. The cost of leather, gold leaf, and labor keeps going up each year, and the number of competent binderies keeps shrinking. Collecting fine bindings is not a hobby for the penurious. For those that can afford it, Chelsea is among the very best.
There are several variations on the process of carefully aging and stretching Biltong into a pleasantly scented and malleable leather for this very purpose; in the form of seminars and workshops with qualified instructors and lecturers. Check your local listings for more info.
Wonderful work, however does the value of a fine first edition drop or go up with a fine binding like this, obviously the book is not in its original state?
How do I find popular fiction ready to be cut and put into signatures? I have been binding blank sheeted notebooks but would like to bind books to read. Thanks much. Ps, bloody steady hand in skiving off the edges!
How hard is it to rebind a book? Once the leathers get so brittle and falling apart but the body of the book is still in great shape. Does binding have to be from the beginning all the way through or can old books be saved?
Hello! very interesting video, i enjoyed every bit of it. If i would like to learn the art of lether book binding, how could i do so? are there any institutions that could offer any courses?
I am a videographer for a public library system in Virginia (USA). Is there a contact person if we wanted to get rights to use some of your footage for a promo I have in mind? I really like the hands on shots and the attention to detail, process, precision, etc. Lovely and well done! How can I contact someone? Thanks in advance.

I never realized how much work really goes into this! Definitely a traditional craft. I hope it stays alive.
There are waaaaay simpler ways of binding a book. This is the crème de la crème.

Modern technology doesn’t make better books.the handmade books are still the best
That is a lot of works, time, materials, and patience just to bind a book. wow. It is an ART.
thank you for being a sane vision of a beautiful craft. The Internet is so full of quick fixes and DIY; this is so refreshing and rewarding.
This is wonderful! Beautifully done. I'll watch it again and again.

I’d give everything to apprentice to a master book binder. Move to another state, live on a couch, anything.

Can you do this to my kindle?
So basically most hardback books of the 19th century were actually hand-made? Great video BTW, very informative.
Apparently some still are or at least repaired.
Can you do it without sewing as I have seen a hot glueing machine?
Respect.
