  • This is a demo of Tallinn, an extraordinary sample library by Orchestral Tools. It comprises a celestial choir, a minimalist string orchestra and two sparkling church organs, all of which performed in the Niguliste church in Tallinn, Estonia. Please let me know in the comments what you think.
No other libraries were used in this demo. No external reverb was applied.

I found your demo via your comment in the Dirk Ehlert stream of Talinn. You, Sir, have done a marvelous job in showcasing this library. But in all honesty, maybe even more your talent for composing.

Thank you, Temme! It was a comparatively quick composition. I found the library to be extraordinarily inspirational.

Very nice demo! I've bought also this library and the special mood that it contains is so amazing. Not easy to make a good composition that fits the tonality of this library, but yours is certainly a successful attempt! Well done!

Thank you, Dirk! With its church background and acoustic, the library does evoke quite a specific mood. I found it fascinating to see how well it worked when transferred into the context of the underwater world, which seems to be a completely different one at first sight. I think it is a library that is splendidly suitable for anything otherworldly or in any way ‘sacred’.
Ben Botkin said something to the effect of working with “Tallinn” having been a quasi therapeutic experience. I agree wholeheartedly!

Overall: great work, Frank. I can see and feel the attention and creativity you put into this. Your technician mixing on this is good, Isn’t it thrilling to take a musical & cinematic idea from concept to completion?
A few suggestions (based on my personal taste): maybe write a simple narrative script for these scenes. From the music and images, I sensed a story unfolding but I wasn’t hearing the story clearly.
Second, I suggest simplifying the arrangement at the start, until the diver appears in the kelp forest. The music was to full, sonically, with too many instruments and parts. Maybe use that intro time to solidly establish a motif, melody, or rhythmic pattern that is the root of your story telling.
I was glad with the mood/theme changes when the seals appeared, and again with the manta ray, I would have liked to hear a few similar theme changes before then.
    Then ending was just right.
    Best wishes to you!

Thank you for your detailed feedback, Russell! I see what you’re saying. Actually, the beginning was quite sparse at first. I then added voices to better demo the sound of the string orchestra on its own. I suppose, I might have got carried away with the number of voices there. You’re absolutely right: the introductory measures are meant to be calm and provide contrast to the choir part that follows. This would certainly be enhanced by thinning out the harmonic content again. - Writing a narrative script for this could be an exciting project! - Thanks again for sharing your impressions!

@@francolupo23 First, where did you get the video. I'm going to be buying the Tallinn samples soon, and I might just write my own soundtrack to the same video, so we can compare styles and artistic decisions.
Second, I watched your video several times more and I realize I wasn't correct in my references to time spans in your music and where I thought it might be improved. Here are more precise reactions and suggestions:
0:00 to 0:13 (On the shore) Very nice intro and compelling harmonic dissonances. Gives a feeling of foreboding. I'm expecting to hear some of those chords or motifs explored when he goes under water.
0:13 to 0:20 (Diver submerges, water gets darker) Good dynamic build, evoking an ominous feeling. I notice you left behind the chords and motifs of the intro, but OK. We must be in some new territory, I am guessing.
0:20 to 1:18 (In the bottom of the kelp forest, looking up, diver swims in with camera) Here is the section where I lost the sense of the story. Seems like the theme/emotion is now "majestic" or "awe-inspiring". Visually, the diver seems relaxed, at home, and not in any danger. Maybe he has dived here many times before? I get the impression that the choir, especially the men, are singing the "theme" of the kelp itself, invoking the "old as time" reverence and dominance.
      > Suggestion: simplify and focus 0:13-0:20, with less of an ominous feeling. Maybe something more processional -- since this diver is following a familiar and comfortable path between two of his worlds. The section 0:13-0:20 is the portal between those worlds, almost like locks in a canal for boats, or castle gates.
      > Suggestion: For 0:20 to 1:18, you maintain the fullness of your arrangement, but it would be good to focus the chord and melodic progression so they tell a more coherent story or evoke more focused emotions. It seems like the diver is simply exploring the ecosystem, but also inhabiting it along with the other fish. The light from the sky creates some interesting contrasts.
1:18 to 1:44 (Modulation, school of fish,...) Very nice modulation. It evoked "ooooh... this could be interesting", since I have now caught on to the theme of exploration.
1:44 to 2:17 (Seals frolicking) Everything about this section of music is great -- Great orchestration (though maybe an opportunity to use the organ more), great arrangement, great chord changes, great counterpoint.
2:17 to 2:34 (Diver frolics with the seals) This music also great, and nicely tied to the previous section. The diver is no longer exploring (no camera) and is clearly just joining in the frolicking -- being "one of the seals", on their terms.
2:34 to 2:52 (Solo Manta Ray) This music is also great, and such a nice progression of music since 1:18.
2:52 to 3:14 (surfacing) Very nice ending. Simple orchestration evokes the intro section, though doesn't quote it directly. Nice finish on a major chord evokes a sweet feeling about the whole experience for the diver.
      -----
Overall: the music from 1:18 to the end was spot on. I think the whole video score + production could be taken to a whole new level of excellence if the (Intro, up to 0:13) and especially the sections between 0:13 to 1:18 were rewritten to evoke themes of exploring a majestic "second world", with anticipation of what might be discovered. The "payoff" comes 1:44 through 2:52. Also, you might take harmonies, chords, and motifs that you use successfully in 1:18 to the end, and introduce them earlier to help build anticipation.
      -----
That's all I have. Again, great work. If that video is freely available, I'd like to download it an take my shot at composing a score with Tallinn

@@russellcameronthomas2116 Hi Russell, I am overwhelmed by the meticulous depth of your analysis. Sensational! This is the type of constructive feedback that really pushes us forward. Thank you!
All your points make complete sense to me. Especially your remarks about compositional coherence through consistency of rhythmic, melodic or harmonic elements.
It is interesting that you should find the first underwater part after the dive the weakest section of the composition because putting it together gave me a lot of fulfillment. I went for simplicity here and felt that the beauty of the voices radiated exactly the awe-inspiring quality of emotion I meant to evoke in the section. Yet, I totally respect that you feel differently about that, of course. I am all the more delighted that the later parts of the piece feel completely adequate for the scenes to you.

Thank you again for your valuable multi-faceted commentary. Much appreciated! All the best to you!

Why every UA-camr pretending to be a composer feels the urge to spam their mediocre music on every forum? I know you desperately look for validation, however, 1) This is not as good as you think; 2) Nobody likes a spammer; 3) Get a real occupation that suits your real skills, like marketing.

Thank you for your thoughts, Eally1979! 1) I'm not much of a UA-camr, 2) I'm not sure I think this is good. I make demos like this one for the community, and so far a lot of people seem to have benefited from them. At least, that's what they have let me know, 3) I don't usually risk being thought of as a spammer. I am sorry if anybody takes me for one.
