  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. On August 23, 2014, Sara Khatib left 4 objects, symbolizing 4 lessons, in our shared time capsule. These were the lessons she wished to share with the world.
Little did we know that this would be her enduring legacy.
Sara passed away 14 days later, but not without ensuring that her call to action would be heard by all.
Sara Khatib - 4th year pharmacy student at LAU - had experienced a lot of hardships for her young age.
Battling cancer, living with an amputation, and enduring the accompanying pain left her with the capacity for so much wisdom, happiness, and humanity. Giving this TEDx talk was on her bucket list as she wanted to share her message with the world!
Exactly two weeks after standing on the TEDxLAU stage, Sara passed away on September 5, 2014, leaving behind her a huge following that continues to live by her inspirational message.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

She loved dancing, and was one of the best students I had. Determined, perfectionist, and never complaining. She had a mission in life and star to follow and she did it to the best of her abilities and excelled.
She is a true exemple to follow in the way she dealt with the constant pain. Her speech made her immortal in our hearts and minds.
I love you Sara, your heart and soul will always remain with me where ever I go and what ever I do.
Thank you for bringing light into our lives

She is so wise for her age. How I hate to see her go.
I met Sara when she was 14 and we've travelled together with CISV, an NGO that fosters peace and global friendship. She could've conquered the world with her smiles and determination.
    A loss for everyone.
    RIP

Very inspiring. A lesson for all of us - never to lose hope, keep high will power and struggle till the last moment of life. Do not wait until it is too late. We all know we have to go one day then why to give up. Let us do whatever we can to contribute to the welfare of human beings. Life is precious, let us value it, let us help to save it, let us do our best to fight all kind of illnesses spreading in the world whether cancer, whether ebola, whether HIV/AIDS.

8:29 ; The reason in regards to the pain towards something that she no longer has is due to the brain sending pain signals to the arm in order to receive feedback to whether the arm is still there or not. However since there is no feedback to the pain signals sent by the brain, the brain sends more and more, the pain grows stronger. One way fixing this issue invented long ago when doctors didn't believe their patients that they still felt their arm even tho it was amputated, it was to make a box with a mirror in the middle of the box making it half, where you have a hole for the non-amputated arm, since the mirror is in the middle of the box and reflecting the non-amputated arm as if it's the other non-existing arm, the brain thus cancels it's ongoing pain signal delivery. That way the brain receives message from the eyes that there are 2 arms. Some parts of the brain do not processes as a whole, so it requires an illusion in order to stop it's unending pain signals to a non-existing organ.

    • @yzarwehbe394
      @yzarwehbe394 10 років тому +3

You can read more about it if you look up "Phantom limb pain". And the mirror box therapy is effective and was invented by V.S. Ramachandran in the 90s.

Robert Frangie We didn't really miss the point, that's why I specified the time in the video, simply because she mentioned that she is constantly under meds and pain, I simply wanted to list another solution where Yzar kindly stated the name of the issue and who invented the therapy.

My beautiful Sara. It's so incredible to see her smile. Although we lived half a world apart, she in Lebanon and I in Tennessee, she has always been in my heart since the moment we met. I 100% believe that people cross paths for a reason, and I couldn't be more grateful that she crossed mine. In 2009, we were camp counselors with a program called CISV where we were inseparable. Although I haven't seen her in person since then, she still remained in my life. More than anything I wish we had more time together, but I'll never take for granted the time that we did have. Distance is irrelevant when someone touches your heart. And from halfway across the world, she continues to live in my heart. She always will. Sara, I love you in every language
