True happiness is inner happiness. Inner happiness is a vibration drug. It's a vibration drug capable of keeping you high for the rest of your life. Inner happiness comes from conscious living and a true feeling of thankfulness for each breath of fresh air, even as you take it. Live in honest thankfulness for your very existence and you'll soon grow an energetic buffer, the vibration of inner happiness.

What indirectly says is that the economical system we are working is not fair and is not in tune with how we used to live for the most of our history. What modern life did is cut our direct connection with the land and other people by dipending on the market. In the past our survival was depending on our direct relation to the land and other people which was called the tribe. So what he showed is that when he returned to that way of living he was working less and enjoying life more with less energy. The underlying question is why when you depend on the market you get a lot less for the same amount of work? My answer is that those that make the rules of the market get a lot more and someone has to lose. Those who lose are the working class and this truth was the argument for communism and we know how that project went. What he indirectly recommends is a return to our ancestors way of living.

He might actually not be very intelligent, compared with his peers, but here's the paradox: if he was intelligent he would still be competing in Bangkok, because the smarter you are, the higher in the hierarchy you get, and even if it's a hierarchy of slaves, the number 1 will find it difficult to leave for something unsure.
He has something that beats intelligence though, he has wisdom. With wisdom he has freed himself, and people are coming to him to learn and work for him. I just hope he doesn't create a new hierarchy of slaves.

Simplicity is the key of happiness. This man lives like that - and me too! I had a very so called “rich“ life for 38 years, but I understood: RICH IS NOT WHO OWNS EVERYTHING. RICH IS WHO DOESN'T NEED IT...! I collected companies, materialistic things, had stress and got sick. So I gave all up and changed my life to a simple one. Now, after 30 years, I live on a beautiful beach on a beautiful island in a warm country with warm hearted people, replanting my own food, getting eggs from my chickens, eating fishes from the sea, learned instruments to play autodidacticly, also painting, and live from playing saxophone in summertime some hours. I live mobile in a horse trailer, after travelling on a boat for many years, together with lots of stray cats and dogs and I'm very happy.

And the worst part is, many people don't do ethical means of business. People tends to follow fashion, because what majority of people in the society do will have an influence on them.

to do this in america, you would need a lot of money to buy land. you would need expensive equipment to plow the land. you would need to pay for water to grow plants. you are controlled by the amount of money you make instead of what creative things you can build. you are also controlled by the government, you have to apply for grants, apply for jobs, and you are forced to live a life serving other people so that you can one day host jobs for other people. it's much more than just capitalism. this is why so many people are depressed. no one wants to help unless they are paid to.

I think some people are missing the point.
I don't think he's saying everyone needs to physically build a house and grow your own food. What I do think he's expressing, is we need to stop trying to "keep up with the Joneses" and not let our society, fashion, peers or anyone else dictate to us how our lives should be lived. We get so caught up in this little ridiculous crap that we'll do things like work 12 hours a day at a job we hate, to come home to a place that has six bedrooms, marble bathrooms and a kitchen big enough to cook for a basketball team. And at the end of the day, it makes you miserable.

"I feel like now is the most uncivilized era of humans in this earth" everything is hard to get. I think this line speaks to most people who are homeless, can't even afford to buy foods, clothes and other necessary things.
There is a real gap between people who benefits more from the resources of earth in which all human beings are entitled to benefit from it without interference. Inequality was born. And now, the more advanced one prevails.

But because my family had a financial issue I try my best to sustain, after 2 years I have decided to go back to my home country which is Malaysia, from that time onwards, I found my very own happiness as a minimalist, I am still practicing it until now, the best part is I found my inner peace, I don't have to be somebody else, I just follow my own path. InTheLight You clearly must be some kind of idiot. Humans can build far more sturdy shelters than animals. They can make them shorter yes, but they don't last long. The same can be said of any makeshift shelter you make in the wild. The time of construction doesn't matter, it's how much it can weather. Termite mounds are one example of an animal building that forms over a long time, but they are very sturdy. Coral is the same.
Secondly, why would I have to build my own when someone else can do it for me? This isn't surviving in the wild.

Daniel Horst focus on you rather than society, if u change you will inspire someone close to you to change too and by and by if many people change then there will a changed society.

@Bingo Bongo you're just a little wrong about the last part. Society is nothing but you. If you think you can change, so can society.

Society is us..we need to show the change. It's all in our perspective. Self realization is what matters a lot.

He's right, life is simple but the society keep telling us that life is hard and we have to work hard in order to be happy, we work 8 hours a day and then it's bed time for 5 days a week, when weekends comes we cannot enjoy fully because we have to work on monday, our life is just about work and we are all waiting for really short vacations or until we retired to enjoy life, whenever I bring this up people around me keep saying that is how life supposed to be and they keep mentioning how busy they are as busy is their badge, something to be proud of. I think that we must look things the other direction, life could be hard at some points but it doesn't have to last 90% of our life.

I agree! Been there, done that and now having quit my job have realised all the stress was so futile. Life was so much better before it. I feel happy again after a decade since I first began working

Yes I felt this when i worked 40hrs a week. Then i reduced my work to 3 days. It is great having all this extra free time. But everyone asks me "why do i want to work less? What do i need more days off for, arent I bored?" They probably think i'm strange but i think they're the strange ones working so hard to have their expensive house and car. I'd rather stay in my one bed apartment that i can afford and have all my lovely free time 😊

I feel this. I try to tell my family and friends about this all the time, and they look me as I am crazy.

I've heard "life is hard" so many times, that it has seeped into my mindset and human interactions. I'm going to start saying "life is easy" to myself and hopefully change my perspective.

I am listening to this talk as I get ready for my corporate job that I’ve been working at for 12yrs with 40 more years to go and in the market for buying property but holding back because it simply doesn’t make sense how expensive it is. This was a very meaningful and impactful talk it made me emotional and grounded me. Thank you for sharing your story and wisdom Jon. You are intelligent. This is intelligence.

The best Ted Talk video. It's not about competing against each other and trying to showoff your life and accomplishments, but to live comfortably in your own terms. Don't follow the herd to chase happiness. Do what works for you, with the least amount of resistance and effort.
