    As we learn new things we haven't encountered before, our interests change, perhaps becoming more refined, more specific, sometimes involving a drastic change. Considering that at 12 or 14 there is far more that you haven't yet encountered than that you have, it's hard to define a very specific party to your career, double your lifetime into the future. By the time you finish a PhD, you may be married, may have children of your own. It's good to investigate your interests through clubs at school or in the community, but also good to develop a wider knowledge. If you turn out the be the XYZ specialist who can handle some important but off-topic requirement, your science buddies will love you.

    You should know how to program in every profession. Today knowing AI and big data set are very usual because you let computer to help you in decision making. But as for the computer scientist, most of them write good code but can't analyze the problems and break them down to a simple solution. That's why you need a degree in physics and engineering. You can lean how to program but you can't learn how to think efficiently.

      Hey Andrea! You’re still in high school so it’s no surprise that you’ve only been exposed to math and physics. As tibees said, if you want to pursue astrophysics then she suggests that you study computer science. Definitely not to late to start. Also you can start learning to code on your own:)

    • @RiverTechJess
      @RiverTechJess  5 років тому

      Hey Dhruv, as Tibees said maybe computer science is the best degree for astrophysics:)

    • @berserker8884
      @berserker8884 5 років тому +1

      @Dhruv Gupta DEFINITELY pick math. This is a no brainer tbh. The fundemental knowledge the math major will give you will put you at ease when it comes to theoretical physics. I went into the physics major at first, but it was just WAYYY too hand wavey, experimental and you simply do not know enough math to even begin doing any kind of real physics(most of the time prof is just like, youll understand this math in 5 years, or physics is so basic that its just not that interesting and you are learbing just random equations and facts. You have to get to grad school to really understand classical mech, field theory in things like EM, QFT, GR, dynmaical systems, etc). That frustrated me to no end, morevover the physics major will throw shittons of random heavy workload at you(labs labs labs, chemistry, more labs, even more labs, random boring electives that are just some specific skills or applications, etc), so you wont really have the time to go deep on math, not to mention that the math classes will cover things like real analysis in a single semester, which means that you will simply not have the depth in knowledge a math major would have. Finally, you will learn A LOT more super interesting and powerful mathematics as a math major too, which is obvious, but it is sth you might forget.
      It really depends on what you like and aim for, but you say that you like pure maths, which screams that you wont stand the physics curriculum. Its just not rigorous enough at the undergrad level. Thats why I suggest you go major in math and then take some physics courses part time(classical mechanics, star mech, EM upper division and QM/modern physics). Then you will see if you want a master in theoretical physics or not and later a PhD, or simply directly a PhD. To me, all of the above holds, plus the fact that I just want to learn as much math as possible regardless of its usefullness, the only math field that does not interest me in this moment is number theory tbh. So to me it is super important to learn abstract algebra, analysis, general topology, differential geometry/topology, introductory lie theory etc. and hopefully the third year some intro in functional analysis and meassure theory.
      Hope this helps!

    • @jacobharris5894
      @jacobharris5894 5 років тому

      I think most people will be impressed more than anything. I’ve met a few older friends in college that took very different paths and now are going back to school to change career paths. Which I find very inspiring and motivates me to keep working hard to get my degree. If people are anything like me they’ll look up to you and be impressed because you showed the determination, grit and courage to make a big change in your life. Ignore the people that doubt that you can do it and prove them wrong. The people you meet that believe you can do it and encourage you are the people you want to be around and these are the kind of people who will be lifelong friends.

    I have a question regarding MSc application that I am planning to do. I want to study Masters in Robotics, Systems and Control, but I have a background in mechanical engineering ( studing BSc of mech). Some universities are offering Robotics, Systems and Control inside the mechanical engineering department ( for example ETH Zurich) ,but some of the other universities offer it inside Electrical Engineering department ( for example Georgia Tech). So, my question is that if I apply for those which Electrical Engineering department is in charge, will I decrease my chance to get accepted, because I think I will be evaluated in irrelevant way. What do you think about this?

    • @RiverTechJess
      @RiverTechJess  5 років тому

      Hmmm, I think in BOTH cases you will need to relate how your past experience has prepared you for the program (regardless of mech or electrical). Did you watch the PS video I made?
