I don't understand why you would even dislike this? Seriously, what's there to dislike? This is a well structured guitar lesson, making it easy for beginners like me to learn.
Those who can't learn to play this song by watching this tutorial dislike due frustration. It's easier to project hatred into others than to internalize it and use it to improve yourself.
if you use the Filosofem tuning (As Dev Gohil calls it, it's the tuning that Varg used when he recorded the songs on Filosofem and it's E Standard but tuned at 450 Hz and not 440 Hz like how normal people play this song on) and if you hit the power chords from the 5th fret like he did on 1:26 and play it an acoustic or an electric without it being plugged in, it turns this into dsbm
Subscribed on the strength of this video alone, thank you for the effort Simon - you've got a great way of teaching by being plain. Now to explore the rest of your videos. Cheers pal.
I talked with him erlier, when i pointed out that Simon often does diffenrent than album version, like live for instance. Nothing wrong with this ofc. He ofc had a problem with me pointing that out. I think this guy has a typical fanboy mentality, just ignore him. He was not as hostile though back then. PS: I noticed that Varg in his videos not always played the version from the album also. I man i think in one of the songs he played 2011 version instead. So simon might not be wrong about that perticuliar part.
it doesn't matter how it's played you there are many different ways you can play a riff and it still sounds the same I think it just depends on the player
Well, it matters how it's played if it DOES NOT sounds the same. If it sounds the same, than yes, it's up to you. But if it dont... and we are talking here a case, in which it doesn't sounds the same.
Hello, Simon, bit of a Burzum fan here. I actually grew up not too far away from the maker of this himself. In your intro, I suppose what you're playing is what's also on the album version, but with a rythm guitar on top of it. Playing this solo, I'd suggest just merging the two upper strings into power chords. I'm totally sold on your intepretation of the main riff, I love it! Pretty sure Varg just plays the two power chords on one guitar, with a second one playing 0-2-2-0, (open first string, 2 second etc) after first power chord and 2-5-4-0 after the second one. I've got a request! Windir - Arntor Some classic norwegian folk metal from our beloved Valfar who sadly died way too young. Not particularly difficult, but I'm pretty sure you'd be the only interpreter on youtube giving it a proper sound :) Cheers
+Simon Smith ...one more thing. I have learned harder version of this song, where in chorus you "barré chord" each riff through every strings istead of only powerchords with G string. It sounds better ;) I sugest to try to play this way. Perhaps I will upload tutorial about it someday... Now I will do interpretation on acoustic guitar :) greetings!
Omg, I don't really like metal that much but your channel has tutorials to every damn song my boyfriend likes, so I'm gonna make him happy with some burzum, Watain and dissection covers. Thx
@Simon Smith, Varg plays with some barre chords and strums all strings from the 6th to the 1st string. In his video, in the comments area, he says that the way he plays in the video is the same he used to record it. Do you think you can reverse engineer his method? Thanks!
If I’m gonna be honest i like both versions of the main riff. This version is slightly more unnerving. And from my experience it sounds great in half step down.
Nicely done but have you seen Varg's own tutorial? It's under his channel Thulean perspective, has incorporates this kind of raking into it. Will you see how that fits into your interpretation of the song and do a new video?
Awesome lesson, first time I've learnt a song so quickly, mind you I've only been playing for maybe around 8 months, anyways, how many times is each part of the song actually played?, I want to make sure I'm getting it right on point.
I prefer to sweep descending barre minor chords instead of power chords + open strings individual, sounds darker and colder lol And this is how Varg played it
Barre 3. and play E minor shape and barre 2. and play e minor shape. Alternate it. The main riff all uses this shape. Watch the varg video again with this in mind and you should get it. He does nothing special. Easy and amazing riff
One question on the first riff. When I play it with distortion, the open G string keeps resonating and gets more and more intense, muddying the rest of the riff. Is it a problem with my technique (i.e. you actually need to mute the G string after playing it) or is it a problem with my set-up? I am using Harley Benton guitars (Roswell HAF pickups) in a Positive Grid Spark Amp; I already added a compressor in the signal chain and that helped a bit, but not really much. I don't know how Simon gets that clarity in the first riff with so much distortion on. I'd appreciate any hint. Thanks!

Its easier because its not entirely correct (still a good video)

that opening melody, so simple yet so dark and beautiful. varg is a unique soul. thank you simon.

Slightly different. The sound is basically the same.@@nihilism7444

I've decided that this would be the first complete song I would learn, your video has helped a lot!
Love your channel.
I wanna lern it to but i cant see how he is playing the main riff? Maybe im to dumb but can u send me tab maybe
So, have you improved?

All his work before prison was tuned to 450hz
Before Varg was sent to prison, his guitar was tuned higher than standard tuning... His guitar was tuned in F, not E.
Norwegian logic lmao
Your teaching talent is great!
Muhammadreza Haghiri Thank you my friend! :0)
I can't wait to come back home and try this. The best tutorial I've seen!
The fact that varg wrote this in standard is actually kind of amazing, given how eerie it sounds, I love it
