that is a huge issue with this list...there's a huge difference between an incredible songwriter who also plays guitar, and a guitarist who is unbelievable/influential on the instrument, which is what you would "expect" from a list with this title...

Agreed. He’s probably the one and only guitarist that I can think of that completely transcended the possibilities of the instrument in a way that could never be matched. Not only did he change guitar forever, he changed harmonic language forever, and left an incredible impact on a huge variety of genres, from jazz and fusion, to rock and metal, and so many more. Genuinely my #1 guitarist ever, and even without my bias towards him because of that, it’s absolutely criminal that he wasn’t anywhere in the top 100 or top 50, much less not even included in the top 250

There's a lot of bad stuff on the list.
Gilmour at 28 is bad, Clapton at 35 is awful, Vai at 127 is ridiculous, Allan Holdsworth not being on the list should send someone to prison.
I don't understand a lot of people trying to discredit what Clapton did. I get that he said some horrible stuff, but we should separate it. His 60s run is enough to have him around top10. Beano album, disraeli gears, wheels of fire, layla....EVH said Clapton was his biggest influence, Brian May said he was his hero, Gilmour mentioned the beano album as one of his favourites, he was the guy the Beatles called to record the solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps (and what a solo!). Yes, his solo career went on a different route, the drug problems and all that. But he did more then 95% of the list only during the 60s.
Paul Gilbert, Riche Kotzen, George Benson, Albert Lee, Marty Friedman, Mustaine, Peter Frampton, Gary Moore and we can keep going.

    • @UR_Right24

Exactly, the fact that the guy on the left seemed to intimate that Clapton could even be lower on the list for him but Frusciante already at 10 spots higher on this list than Clapton checks out fine is absurd to me. I can't stand Frusciante or the red hot chili peppers. Clapton is a God.

@@CoverBandConfidential Agreed. It’s interesting to wonder why. What makes Hendrix so different from all the other guitar greats. Part of it I believe is the fact that he died so young. So not really to do with his playing. He was ostensibly a blues player. But undeniably he had a sound that was immediately recognizable and unique. He reminds me a little of Big Bill Broonzy who no one seems to talk about, but who was incredibly influential, again because no one sounded like him. Even when you play Broonzy’s tunes, no matter how skilled you are, you can’t sound like him. Case in point, Claptons version of Hey Hey.

If body of work was a criteria that had weight behind it, Alex Lifeson should be top 10. BTW, Jeff Beck should be top 3 easily. The thing about Beck that separates him from most of the greats is, he uses the mechanics of the guitar to get melodic sounds you generally don't hear coming from a guitar. This adds to his creativity and he took guitar playing to heights never seen before. Lastly the biggest omission from RS's list is Gary Moore, when it comes to makes the guitar speak, he's just might be my favorite guitarist of all time.

Even if a person had the best techniques, a very good understanding of theory, modes, and scales doesn't mean you can play like Malmsteen. IMO many guitar players (Randy was not the first), have tried to incorporate a classical fusion into their playing. Malmsteen took the neo classical rock/metal genre a lot further than most.

It's not all wrong and I understand that more than just guitarists created it, but wow. No room in there for Allan Freaking Holdsworth!? They never heard or read what other guitarists, many on this list, have said about him? You can't forget all the many non rock and blues players, either? If they truly had a thorough history of the instrument, Andre Segovia should have been in the top 5. In the early 20 century, when guitar was widely considered just an accompaniment style folk instrument, his playing totally changed the public's view of what the guitar could be. He single handedly made it a respected, concert solo instrument, still influencing millions of guitarists to this day, some not even realizing it. So, that's not historically significant enough for ya, Rolling Stone? What's next, "The 250 Best Composers" and not mentioning the likes of Bach, but somehow Ed Sheeran makes it in there? You can't really take them seriously, I know, it's an ignorant list, but.... I guess I need to take a walk right now.

@@Walesktf I mean, after his game changing material with John Mayall and Cream and Derek and The Dominoes....what more does he need to prove? He has chosen to play in a more song oriented style, a more laid back approach to playing, and I too wish he'd cut loose more often, like he did on Out Of The Cradle album (you heard that one?) but there is still a lot of high quality tunes, scattered across his solo catalog, especially the first four or five albums he made. I do understand the feeling people have about his solo career, though, and would have welcomed him focusing on music with more edge and attitude. The man should never be considered less than a guitar genius, when all is said and done, though! Cheers!

I propose that the most glaring musical injustice is the omission of Buckethead as tied for first place with Hendrix! How can any modern guitarist be as great as Hendrix and be completely overlooked by Rolling Stone and most of the Rock community? Don’t trust me, TRUST YOUR EARS after hearing the Rock, Gilmour-like, and Wah Pedal Mastery playlist links at the end of this post. Some of his career highlights include making over 500 multi-genre studio albums, playing in Guns N Roses from 2000-04, offered to work with Ozzy’s band in ’05, Gibson manufactures his signature series guitar in 2010, & his music featured on Guitar Hero 2 video game. I believe that he is the most important rock guitarist since Hendrix and EVH because he has pushed the boundaries of what can be creatively accomplished on the instrument. His style has elements of Gilmour, Hendrix, EVH, & Vai, yet has its own virtuosic uniqueness.

Gimme a break with Cobain, he did nothing that many, many others didn't do just as well if not better. Don't get me wrong, I can enjoy Nirvana, but talk about a band being propped up by a ridiculous amount of nostalgia.
Not to mention the number of people I've encountered that wholeheartedly believe Nirvana, or mostly Cobain, wrote each and every song in the unplugged set, and I have even encounter those that will vehemently argue against proof that this is patently false instead of being happy that considering how much they like the songs that now they have several new bands to delve into that they'll probably enjoy.

I am not a musician (middle school drummer and clarinet do not qualify). I am a lover of music and at the age of 60 have heard pretty much everyone who plays the guitar from Segovia to Hendrix to Pass to Keaggy. What I truly am is an academic. In the academic world, methodology is foundational to any academic project. The first question asked of PhD candidates at their oral defense in my field is--"How did you arrive at your conclusions?" What criteria did you use to justify your findings?
The first strike against this list is that Rolling Stone fails to publish the methodology they employed in generating the list. Essentially, the magazine is stating that "We can rank any guitarist in any slot with no explanation or justification for the decision." This list would have been failed. I take that back. It would not have been green lit in the first place.

The word "underrated" gets way too much use when describing musicians, but in Chris's case is fully warranted.

Advice to Rolling Stone the next time they put together a list like this: A) Don't rank anyone. Just say, here are the best 250 or 300 guitarists of all time in not particular order. B) if they want to rank them, do it by era. and C) if a player is not as technically proficient as others but were or are a major influence on other players then do a separate list for that.
