    I'm pretty sure RS knows they are irrelevant and have been for decades. These lists are the only reason anyone remembers them at all, and they know that as well. And it works, because there are dozens of videos on UA-cam calling them out for how absurd this list is. Mission accomplished.

    This quote from the list perhaps explains things a bit
    "Rolling Stone published its original list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists in 2011. It was compiled by a panel of musicians, mostly older classic rockers. Our new expanded list was made by the editors and writers of Rolling Stone. This one goes to 250".
    "In making the list, we tended to value heaviness over tastiness, feel over polish, invention over refinement, risk-takers and originators more than technicians. We also tended to give an edge to artists who channeled whatever gifts god gave them into great songs and game-changing albums, not just impressive playing".

    • @a.scottanderson4490
      @a.scottanderson4490 7 місяців тому +1

      Wtf is heaviness vs tastiness? There's heavy distortion, and I've heard bouncy jam band music referred to as "tasty", that can't be it - I can only assume the children who wrote this preamble just don't know any better.

    • @krob5375
      @krob5375 6 місяців тому

      Any list of "greatest", regardless of how you categorize the entries, cannot exclude literally dozens of the actual greatest players, while including dozens of, in comparison, mediocre players based solely on being more inclusive. Billy Joe has written some catchy tunes, but there's not a guitar player on earth who will say he's more qualified for a "greatest" list than say, Morse, Moore, Di Meola, Emanuel or Holdsworth just to name a few. Terrible list.

  • @rft2001
    @rft2001 7 місяців тому +8

    The list is a joke. After years of agreement on the greatest guitarists, suddenly they change to promote people who are there only because of their gender, race or socio-political views. How else can we explain that after years of fawning over Clapton, they now turn on him and drop him into the mid-30's. How else can they explain why Joni Mitchell was in the top 10. I love Joni as a performer (not as a guitar player) but putting her above Stephen Stills, who isn't even in the top 100, is laughable. And putting her above Tony Iommi? That is just insane.
    Then we have the fact that they didn't even have the taste to put Robin Trower, Frank Marino or Gary Moore in there. Those guys may not be household names but anyone who knows music knows how good those guys are/were.

    I can see Chrissy Hynde ahead of Paul McCartney. She's one of the best rhythm players out there, and guitar is not even Paul's primary instrument. In my mind he shouldn't even be on the list. He's a bass player that has been known to play a little guitar.
    Carole King? As in "Tapestry" Carole King? Isn't she a pianist/singer/songwriter, does she even play guitar? I could maybe see "Carol Kaye" but she was mostly known for her bass work rather than guitar.
    Dolly Parton? C'mon man... She plays cowboy chords with inch long fingernails. She's a great singer and songwriter, but hell she's probably not even in the "Top 250 Country Guitarists". There are probably 250 guys in Nashville alone that can pick circles around her.
    Alison Krauss (according to her wiki page) doesn't even play guitar... she's a "fiddle", Piano, and mandolin player.
    I'd probably give Derek Trucks the "greatest slide player" title. (Although Justin Johnson might have something to say about that). But "overall best"... yeah... No.
    They included the Thin Lizzy guys, but left Gary Moore off the list HAHAHAHA.
    Tim Henson by himself... completely ignored Scott LePage in the same band and equally as good.

    • @Intersectionrecordsstl
      @Intersectionrecordsstl  7 місяців тому +1

      McCartney only played bass because that’s what they needed him to do in the Beatles. He can rip on a Les Paul. Check out the Concert for Monserrat footage from 1997. Carol Kaye plays guitar as well as bass. I am uploading my 100 guitarist left off the RS 250 list. Check it out when it goes up. Thanks for watching and your thoughtful comments.

      @@Intersectionrecordsstl Oh let me explain... I'm not questioning that Paul CAN play a guitar... the guy can play anything he picks up... well. But when given the choice of what he "wanted to play" instrument wise after leaving the Beatles, 90% of the time with Wings he had a bass on. So, I see him as a "Bass player that can play anything".
      I know Carol Kaye was originally a guitarist, but she was kind of pushed to the bass early on and that is what she's on 10,000 or so records playing. So, again I just see her mostly as a bass player.

Many virtuosos are in flamenco and gypsy music like Paco Pena or Manitas de Plata (Ricardo Baliardo) who is from my region and he knew Picasso, Dali, he sold more records than most of the guitarists on the list and he played at Carnegie Hall. Steve Jones was the sex pistols, not the Clash (mick jones), and yes indeed, Chrissie Hynes should be ahead of paul mccartney by any sane measure because she performed as a guitarist in a variety of ways for at least 20 years, whereas mccartney was the beatles bass player and not known for guitar work as solo. I enjoyed your video; it's clear that you put a lot of thought into it. I've been listening to music for 60 years and I love the guitar. Of the 250 players on this list, I didn't recognize 122 of them, Some because of the world music thing, some because, although I might know a band, I didn't like their music enough to pay attention to who played the guitar. I simply never bought any of their albums. Plus, you must admit that some are pretty obscure.
    Next, most of these lists, yours included, pay no respect to Southern Rock. There are some fantastic guitarists in Southern Rock. Six SR guitarists are included on the list - Dicky Betts, Warren Haynes, Alan Collin, Gary Rossington, Billy Gibbons, and Derek Trucks. Most of them were underrated. Dicky Betts at 145, while his bandmate, Duane Allman, s at #10, a place he deserves. Allen Collins and Gary Rossington were listed together Bad) at 113, Warren Haynes, Billy Gibbons (102), and Derek trucks (80) - all low rated. SR's not on the list, to name a few, Toy Caldwell (Marshall Tucker Band), Hughie Thomasson (and others) from The Outlaws, and Ed King of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Ed King created some of the most recognizable guitar parts ever. He created the intro and solos for Sweet Home Alabama and the third guitar part for Free Bird. Charlie Daniels, who you listed as country, is more like a southern rocker.
    Here are some other players I think have been two lowly rated, in some cases ludicrously low rated -- Robbie Krieger (248), Keith Urban (241), H.E.R. (233), Eric Johnson (205), Vince Gill (202), Steve Lukather (186), Rory Gallagher (175), Johnny Winter (166), Carl Perkins, Stephen Stills (140), Joe Perry (136), Robert Cray (133), Nils Lofgren (132), Joe Walsh 130), Steve Vai (127), Steve Howe (117), Lindsay Buckingham (110), Mark Knopfler (96), Wes Montgomery (82), Eric Clapton (35), Brian May (33), & David Gilmour (28). You may notice that most of these are classic rockers. Many of them I have seen in the top 50 on many lists in the past, including Rolling Stone. Do they grow old and their greatness fade out of mind with some folks? How many times has Eric Clapton been in the top 10? Almost always. When Hendrix went to London, he met Eric Clapton. Who did he ask to tune his guitar before he played? Clapton. How many kids became guitarists after hearing Clapton? Many, including Joe Bonamassa sadly noton the list.
    Others left off the list - Greg Lake, Terry Kath, Gary Moore, Rick Derringer, Elliot Randall (Reelin' in the Years), Robin Trower, George Benson, Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, Andre Segovia, Leo Kotke, Steve Miller, Mark Farner, Neal Schon, Randy Bachman, & Peter Frampton. Disclaimer: I made this list before I watched your reaction.
    A final word. In the last ten years I've seen George Benson, Joe Walsh, and Mark Farner. All of them were great; age ain't nothin' but a number!

      Wow!! What’s a comprehensive comment. You are so right. I love Charlie Daniels on albums like Fire on the Mountain and Saddle Tramo. Southern Boogie Rock right up there with the Allman Brothers. How about Marcus King nowhere on the list. Like you said no Terry Kath, Toy Caldwell or Gary Moore. It's should be about impact with the instrument. Not opinion about the music. Not woke bs. Not I held and strummed a guitar and sing. Who created a style or started a music genre? If the guitar in the band isnt the main instrument or foundation of the music then its wrong, regardless of genre. Also contrary to popular belief longevity or amount of songs should count.

    I’m of the opinion that there is no “greatest guitarist” of all time. In fact, it really makes me wonder why RS continue to do these stupid lists. There’s literally 1000’s of guitarists better than Hendrix and David Gilmore. Ok, they had their moment, now move on. Just in the last 2 decades has produced some awesome guitarist. Devin Townsend, Quan Yeomens, Cornelius, Alex and Thomas White from The Electric Soft Parade, to name just a few exceptional guitarist. The Strolling Bones magazine needs to lift its head and start to focus on tomorrow, not yesterday. Rant over
