Immensely enjoyed the Orkney series. I’ve been to Kirkwall, Stromness & places in-between. No worries AT ALL about the reroute from Papa Westray. Like you said, it’s a darn good reason to return. Happy trails & travels! 🥾
For me I think sitting by the pilot would be definitely worth the price. Flying the shortest scheduled air route would come a close second. A great video as always.
Scott you'll never live that one down :D Aye, I'm with you on that, I'd still love the flight for the channel one day, but it's an awfy long way to go for another fail!
A funny thing happened to us on Westray. We had booked to stay in the Pierowall Hotel and were arriving on bicycles on the ferry. If you drive there from the ferry its very quick - its not a long distance by bicycle but of course its slower than by car, maybe half an hour (cant quite remember). Anyway, we cycled down there from the ferry and when we got there they were very surprised to see us. “But we booked”, we said, to which the landlord’s response was “well, we knew you were coming and when you didnt arrive off the ferry we presumed you would arrive on Friday”. The point is, thats how time works on Orkney. If it takes a couple of days who cares - time is very relaxed there - as you found out when the flight didnt go to Westray, nobody bats an eyelid, you will arrive some time. Maybe that’s how you should think of visiting Westray .. maybe it will take a few attempts to get there :-)
I really enjoyed this video because the remote and sparseness of the small villages and locations, I'm amazed to see the unique places that people live - and Steve if it weren't for you putting the effort to make it possible, I'd never get the chance to see these very unique and wonderful places people live. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!
The issue will be due to "density altitude" if its a hot day. The warmer air is thinner, and therefore its the same as operating at a higher altitude. The engines have less power and the wing develops less lift, so the aircraft doesnt perform as well. If Westray is a short airstrip and the aircraft is heavy (fuel, pax and freight weight) it may not meet the legal safety margins for a commercial operation. In winter when the temps are colder, the air is denser, so this is less likely to happen then.
@@hanscattini468 Probably a number of factors including weight. If the atmospheric pressure was low, that would have a similar effect as well. Best results always come on cold, crisp high pressure days...
Sitting in the front on the right side. We used to fly with our dad so often in Lilydale, on the outer eastern side of Melbourne Australia, when I was in primary school. It was magical, dad was an excellent pilot and a bit of a perfectionist so we always felt completely safe. Our lovely dad is gone now and I’m so glad that I have these memories with him ♥️
Ok, I know you were disappointed, but let’s be honest, wasn’t that the best flight ever both going there and back, what an absolute honour to be sitting right there to enjoy the spectacular views. Though I’d be terrified about touching anything! Lol I don’t have a car now, but still want to head up to explore Orkney mainland and will use the Stagecoach buses when up there
You're right mate, it was still a pleasure! Would love a wee trip around on public transport too, but I think outside the mainland it'd be pretty limited eh!
I think you need to update your accommodation web site Steve. The first place you visited didn’t even have a roof 🤣Bril travel log as always. Thank you.
Great viewing once more Steve, you vary your places to visit, some out of the way places, which folks like us oldies will never be able to visit, makes for more entertaining viewing for us. Thanks for sharing, Noel Philips of Scotland 👍.
I have just discovered your videos. I LOVE small aircraft - your filming of the flights was so exciting! And it's a dream of mine to visit the Hebrides - one day!
Hi Steve. I love the fact that the local school has a little basic exercise book... (well that's what we call them in Australia 😂)...; in a Ziploc bag, and in a tin to protect it, for visitors to sign ❤. And the "wee hoose" at the Bothie museum, full of so many interesting items. I noticed, of all things in it , the bottle of Swan Ink ! Way, way back in primary school, in Victoria, Australia, it was the compulsory ink for our fountain pens ! And I got into trouble, because my mum got me a different brand !! Now...back to the flight. What a lovely pilot you had, to take on the role of your guide as well, including the small detour to show you and all of us the sights, on the return leg ! Looking forward to when you succeed 😊
Between Scott @planestrainseverything almost being arrested in Germany and your almost-but-not-quite flight it's been quite the week for a couple of our favourite Scottish youtubers. Not a bad thing to have to return to Orkney, really. Interesting that winter is the best time to have a greater chance at catching that flight. I have to say I loved the little guestbook in the ziplock bag in the tin, and the fact that the museum is open, unattended, with its exhibits set out, labeled, to be enjoyed independently and unsecured. That trust (that seems to be rewarded) restores faith in humanity in some ways, doesn't it.
Hey Steve, you might have missed the shortest flight in the world, but you enjoyed the best seat in the house on another one greetings from Los Angeles
Runway selection is determined by the direction of the wind, especially in small planes. Headwinds are preferred when landing. The shorter taxi route was just a bonus.
Flight audio…… if you want to hear the audio in the aircraft from the headsets you have two easy options. Firstly get yourself (if you haven’t one) a lavalier mic that you can plug into your GoPro and touch the mic into the headset ear cup. Secondly record same on a dictaphone that can use an ext mic. Loved the vid 👍😊
You'll get that certificate sometime, another fine video. Neat little museum. Good to see the Islander again and encouraging that Britten Norman are ramping up UK production.
We've just got back today from our latest trip to Orkney. Can't wait till we can go back, it's lovely up there! I can see why you and Alicjia keep going up there too :)
Ha, yes they clearly built that house so close to the airport for the same reason they built Windsor Castle so close to Heathrow! 😆 What a shame you didn't achieve your goal though. Oh well, as you say, you have an excuse to go back another day. Plus you still managed to make a beautiful video. 😊
Just means you have to go back, and that's not a bad thing. This part of Scotland is so beautiful and appealing - tho' i don't imagine I am tough enough to be able to handle the winters. Thanks Steve. And as always, AWESOME!
Some people definitely struggle with the dark winters, though tbh they don't bother me (lived here nearly 20 years) - the wind can take a bit of getting used to though, some days it's like constantly being slapped on the face whenever you leave the house....or at least that's how it feels!
Felt for you there mate! Your time on Papay though at least brought back some great memories for me, I got a sticker from the school box, walked some fantastic beaches and yes the hostel on a Saturday night I can definitely recommend. Looking on the bright side, you’ve got multiple times more views on this video than mine where I did actually do the flight! 😂😂 There’s always a next tme 👍
Steve I am not sure if we could have heard much audio consider the drone of the aircraft engines. They don't bother me. I am an aviation enthusiast. I don't have a private pilots license but I still love planes. I am almost 70 and I think flying is a young mans game.
Oh what a shame and I can well understand your disappointment, but also how totally brilliant to be able to sit in the front seat on both legs, now that really is special, I'd have loved that. Great video
Fabulous. This video brought back many happy memories of my time living on Orkney. The hostel on Papay is a wee gem of a place. I have managed the shortest flight and I look forward to watching your return to get it done.
Fantastic vìdeo, a great reminder of our flight from Papa Westray in April 2014. We were lucky enought to do the shortest flight, sitting just behind the pilot and the empty seat Thank you
I'd have just stayed the night and tried again the next day, as long as you were there. But, that is probably easier said than done in such a remote location. Orkney is on my short bucket list. Thanks for the video and the info on requesting the "catbird seat."
You certainly look the part with the shades and the David Clark bins. A combination of the aircraft's total weight and the ambient temperature, wind direction, and strength determines the length of the fake off-roll. The higher the temperature, the lighter the wind and the longer the take-off roll. It is quite possible that the combined factors ruled out using the available runway.
Lovely video. Thanks for including the engine sound, i love to hear them. Looking forward to when you go back and do the shortest flight so we can ride along with you on UA-cam. Greetings from Jamaica.
Thanks for showing me round the island and it will be nice for you to stay there for the night and sitting next to the pilot having the front sit and it nice weather thanks Steve and I am doing ok
Poor Steve. You had to be so disappointed. But the views from the return flight were amazing! And you had a front row seat for it. Hopefully you’ll be able to try again. Onto the next adventure…. ✈️ ✈️🚌🛩️🚉🛳️
No fails here! My hubby once bought me a one hour flying lesson as a surprise. When i arrived at the aerodrome I found I was to have my lesson in a tiny two seater. A heady mix of terror and excitement...thanks for sharing.
Hi Steve, nice hooses one more desirable than the other! Gutted for you not getting the shortest flight, but at least your the co-pilot again. Better luck next time Steve. All the Best.
Great video . Any time I can see Orkney I’m happy and now you have a reason to return. Then you get to have a wee wander around the lovely island of Westray!
Enjoyed the video as usual Steve. It's a shame that you didn't get the chance of the shortest flight, but hopefully next time. That wee house was quite special to see and the Bothie was awesome. Front seat again, cool. Thanks again mate. C u on the next one.
Reminded me of my grandparents house in County Sligo in 1968!! They had no running water and electricity had only arrived in 1966. But we loved that house - it was magic!!! We were originally from Scotland (though our parents were Irish).Ended up staying in Ireland(don't ask) .But of course if I can remember 1968 I'm a fair bit older than you Steve!!
you made that look easy but sitting next to the pilot is a full body clencher for me, i wouldn’t be able to move the entire flight for fear of touching anything!
Thanks Steve, great video. The same effort and dedication throughout even though you couldn’t get there. I wonder how many of the 8000 viewers so far have managed it? Not too many I’d say… Please keep up the great work showing us these beautiful islands. ❤💥
Gutted for you but at least there will now need to be another visit. What an experience, your videos make me want to visit some of the islands and do some exploring. Love your content, now going through your back catalogue and have even got my 82 year old dad watching 😊
I flew in the seat beside the pilot on the short hop from Connemara to Inis Mor last year. Exactly like this. BN Islander also. Fantastic little planes. I loved the sound of the twin 6 cylinder boxer engines when they started up also.
Ahhh that's so close yet so far! At least we'll be treated to another future video from Orkney, there's a plus. :) Also, in the Steve Marsh bingo, I had 'this is my dream hoose!'. Wasn't far off Hahaha.
Another great video Steve! Such a shame you didn't make the shortest flight this time. As you say it's a good excuse to return. Brings back memories of trying to get to Fair Isle from Shetland for my 40th a few years ago. 2 failed attempts during our weeks holiday up there, oh well. We did however make it over to the Out Skerries to watch a film in the tiny Schoolhouse cinema which I'm led to believe has now sadly closed. All the best, James
2:37 I saw a similar door lock mechanism in old countryside houses in Latvia. Industrial heritage is also interesting. I wonder if it was made by some famous company and exported around the world. Those museums used to make me homesick, especially The Black Country Living Museum in Dudley
Is that the earliest premier inn, so near the airport. What a nice idea and project by the papay school, I wish them well. Well one day we’ll see the flight, but still a very enjoyable video. Love seeing the islands
As the wife of a Cessna jet engine mechanic, I love small aircraft and how they can get into places the jumbo jets cannot. I love Steve’s big and wee adventures! Thank you! ❤
Sorry you didn't make it Steve. I think the reason that it is more likely to happen in winter time is that the air termperature is colder. Since cold air is more dense than hot air, the plane is able to take off and land in a shorter length of runway which is especially important in this case given that the runway on the island is so short. I think he said the air temperature was 17 degress celcius which means that the air is less dense so the plane was too heavy to be able to take off / land in the amount of runway available to it. He said that there was 150 kilos knocked off so basically the plane was too heavy to take off in the amount of runway available to it. Had the plane been less heavy or the air temperature been colder (thus making the air more dense), then it might have been OK. For the same reason, a plane taking off from a runway at sea level is able to take off quicker than the same plane taking off at an airport that is at a higher level above sea level since the density of air reduces with height. A plane will perform well at low temperatures at airports near to sea level (due to the dense air) but performance will gradually reduce as the air temperature becomes warmer and the height of the airport above sea level increases (since the air becomes less dense).
The best “fail” video possible. Gorgeous in all respects. One day you will return to experience the shortest flight, and hopefully you will take us along for the ride. 👍😎
Great video footage Steve, its a shame that you did not do the shortest flight. Apologise I have not watched your videos for a while, as I have been busy doing a lot day trips stock photography and celebrating a certain (50) birthday. Will start to watch them again as they are sooooo good and very interesting!!!!!!
Great footage Steve, if a disappointing premonition, I admire the pilots that fly these light aircraft, that was the best take off although my heart was racing like crazy, thanks for another enjoyable flight ✈️ I agree front seat on a bus just does’t cut it! 😊

Gutted for you but at least there will now need to be another visit. What an experience, your videos make me want to visit some of the islands and do some exploring. Love your content, now going through your back catalogue and have even got my 82 year old dad watching 😊
Aww that's so cool, thanks so much to you both!
Also, in the Steve Marsh bingo, I had 'this is my dream hoose!'. Wasn't far off Hahaha.
Haha you know me too well! :D
Haha love it mate! :D
Great adventure Steve……I could happily live in that wee house.
I'll fight you for it pal! :D
Thank you Steve...!it's people like you we need now in a time with all the bad news!🥰
Thanks mate! Oh I tend to avoid 'news' altogether now!
Never a fail…that was great. Would love the seat you had both here and back!
Yeah I must admit that was a bonus! :)
Not a failed video m8 just one with a different ending than we thought. Up front again though so that's a bonus. Look forward to the day you do it.
Cheers Michael! Aye, still a cracking experience
Unlike what happened today, your videos never fail! Cheers Steve!!
Ah cheers mate!
Hey thanks so much for this!
Good Pilot
The best “fail” video possible. Gorgeous in all respects. One day you will return to experience the shortest flight, and hopefully you will take us along for the ride. 👍😎
Wow steve I am so jealous what a trip worth every penny m8 1 day you will get there pal all the best John 😊
One day mate! So true though, a bargain adventure when you consider what some organised day tours cost!
Lovely POV for the flight ! 🙏
A joyful watch, thank you
Thanks so much! :)
What a shame, Steve but it was still a good trip for you, riding beside the pilot..TWICE! 👍👍
Yeah, every cloud eh! :)
Great video despite the disappointment. Thanks!
Cheers! One day I'll get it on the channel!
Great video. Sitting up top fantastic. Enjoy the ⛴️!
Cheers Simon :)
Great footage Steve, if a disappointing premonition, I admire the pilots that fly these light aircraft, that was the best take off although my heart was racing like crazy, thanks for another enjoyable flight ✈️ I agree front seat on a bus just does’t cut it! 😊
Haha yes the bus felt a little underwhelming :D
That was a wonderful tour of the Knap of Howar. Not a fail for me!
Thanks Susan :) Just as well I'd filmed a bit of footage there eh!
Thanks for the great video, you are so lucky to sit in the front. I love Scotland and often make the trip from Yorkshire.
It was a real treat to be sat up there!
