Ya towards the end of the video there’s a clip with one of those on the stock, made outta of an old leather boot lace. Work pretty well especially with a little hockey tape wrap as a pad.
I vote adding a leather belt shoulder sling attached on the top and bottom of the stock to your personal optimal length with a few antique brass upholstery tacks to hold it on 👍 It would look awesome! Plus you could easily remove it later with only some tiny thumbtack diameter sized holes to fill... It may hide some of stock pins too if you decide to dress it into a wall hanger... Which I would accept, but I would be disappointed... 🤣 Nice work 👍
A cool trick I learned from just finishing a 1928 Belgian, If the wood doesn’t hold (time will tell) soak it in a acetone before regluing. (Learned that from Larry Potterfield 😁) It’ll leach that oil out of the wood and make for a real secure bond, and it doesn’t even seem to roach the stain. Then, just to be completely retro, boiled linseed oil as the final finish. This 1928 Belgian is more beautiful than it could’ve ever been rolling out of the factory. All mirror blued, and just as a fluke, it came with the most beautiful wood imaginable for a plain old line gun. All flamed/tiger striped wood front and back! I’ve looked at a couple hundred A5s during my research, and I’ve never seen one with this show quality furniture. The stock guy must’ve been feeling frogs that day.🤷🏻♂️
Was going to say this. Acetone will dry wood out very nicely. Epoxy is a much better idea than wood glue as well. Since it’s a Frankenstein rebuild I’d have half way considered using long brass wood screws and cut them off flush and sanded them. That’s just me though.

You can also get a 2 piece lifter from a Browning, they fit right in no modifications, and it loads automatically when you put one in the nag tube, and you don't have to hold the button anymore
Im a 21year career gunsmith. You can buy nails to use as a pin. Cut them off once you drive them in. I pre-drill a hole thats small and press them in with my vise. Use wood glue or epoxy to hold it from the bottom. This will keep it from pulling out as it expands. Some people use screws and cut them off and fill them. I dont because the head is where the strength is. You could plug cut a wood screw hole if you want. It would allow the head to be hidden. If you use the scrap to cut your plug and for filler it will match. When gluing i would take a dowel wrapped in a baggie with release agent sprayed on it to fill that recoil area.
I've got a Browning designed Steven's 520 in 16ga that I've modified into a trench clone 20" barrel with sling. I love it even though it's a bastard child gun. I'm having the barrel threaded for chokes to use it for more things. It became my favorite shotgun of all time. The looks and shooting and handling are exactly what I hoped. Mne was made in 1917.
Before my grandfather passed he gave me his grandfathers 1920's Auto 5 and father's 1950's Auto 5 (also passed down a Damascus barreled 10ga I occasionally send some blackpowder shells through but it's mostly a retired wall hanger). The 20's has a massive goose barrel and the 50's is just a hair over legal length. My favorite shotguns that I'll never part with.

I bought a Browning A5 from The San Francisco Gun Exchange which was on 2nd St. 1 1/2 blocks from Market St. For those that are not familiar, that is smack dab in the center of downtown. Oh how times have changed. It is a 16 guage, parkerized that looks like a trench gun. Someone clearly built it. I tried doing research on it but very difficult. Im guessing its from around 1930s. When i saw your video, i noticed the similarities to mine. Nice job on yours.
A titebond glue joint is stronger than the original wood. I'm not sure any of those pins were necessary. If you clean up your gluing surface with a high grit sandpaper, you would not be able to re-break it along it's original crack. If you like the idea of the pins, I think you should use wood. A toothpick or thin dowel will hold better than a nail with wood glue because both are porous. If you want the nail, epoxy would be a better adhesive with mixed materials. I only mention this as you went thru considerable trouble putting the stock back together. Maybe you felt the oil was a potential wildcard. Also, a suction cup is a good way to force slightly watered down glue into cracks you don't have full access to.
Ya it was all an experiment, I kinda think I should’ve roughed up the nails a little to give the glue a better surface to hold onto or used a threaded screw. It was just such a tight area to work in I didn’t think I could get wood dowels in there. Thanks for the comment!!
I was thinking the same things. Dowels and wood-glue or epoxy for wood to metal bonding, if metal pins were actually needed, which they probably weren't, but better safe than sorry when dealing with firearms.
Incredible work bro. Ive been considering doing this on a model 11 sportsman 16 gauge. It was 2+1 capacity, i altered it to 3+1. Reblued the whole thing and replaced 5 parts. I want to cut it down as short as possible but i cant hack the SBS tax right now. Great job on the compensator btw I love it.
My WW2 Marine Raider grandfather always said these shotguns were devastating in the jungle and if the shtf he'd cut his down also with a piece of rope for a sling
Next video: 45 minutes of attempting making random sizes of springs from piano wire with a tool collection dating for 1820 to 2020... Which I'm completely down for 🤣👍 If you don't go full modern and find a guy to tig weld on a piece of steel pic rail for a red dot, (another tool to add to the list for this hobby btw😉) then you should try brazing/tapping the vent rib for a classic style ramped brass bead front rifle sight (the larger the bead the better! Maybe the front sight from a revolver would actually be better 🤔) or one of the old-school oddball "big bead" front sights... Think of a modern vent rib snap on tall hi-viz sight but pre -1960's 😂 There are some pretty cool looking, although suspiciously terribly ineffective looking examples online (maybe some of those were profiled down rifle or revolver front sights?) I need to look again lol... And the worn leather belt tacked over the top/bottom of the stock with some oil rubbed bronze/antique copper upholstery tacks is a must do experiment! You can get them from the hardware store in flatter styles than the classic round button if you don't want it ribbed for the bank's pleasure 😂 Also they leave tiny thumbtack sized holes, so it's an easily removable mod/experiment... Just keep it classy and round or taper the cuts on the end, I think square cuts would throw of the slim trim and classy classless gangster look 😉👍

So impressive hah I’m not gonna lie I have seen that stock listed on eBay for the past year when trying to source parts for my model 11 and wondered who tf would be crazy enough to buy it. You made it look perfect I’m jellous I didn’t think of that. Also I strongly suggest you replace the big recoil spring you can use any browning auto 5 reproduction spring I bought one for 18 bucks from MGW. Also any browning light 5 or savage 720 forearm will work in your gun. Sometimes the forearms get pounded out from the barrel contacting the forearm wood so I put a pvc buffer in mine. Also the malfunction at the end of the video is most likely because the buffer spring is weak and wasn’t able to push the shell hard enough when they occasionally bind any a5 buffer spring can be used and MGW sells them too. Have fun with this wonderful gun they are literal tanks!
Thanks!! I emailed MGW about if the springs would work in a M11, they said they weren’t compatible I guess they just have never tried it. I’ll pick up a recoil spring and buffer spring and see if that smooths out my problems.
Not sure if you're aware, but the A5's spring and friction ring set up is how you tune to the types of loads you're shooting. No doubt the busted stock you had was from someone shooting the wrong ring set up, they're known for busting the stock from violent recoil due to collapsed springs or the wrong friction ring set up. Ohh I’ve done a lot of research on that, it’s currently set up for heavy loads and recoils fairly soft for a chopped down stocked gun. The feeding issues seem to be a worn out carrier spring or something similar.
@@MaximusOverhead I saw one a few years back that someone had cut the barrel to 18", cerakoted in dessert tan and put aftermarket black synthetic stock and foregrips on. gotta admit it was pretty sharp. I'd never do that to a Belgium Browning, but If I ever run across one of the savage or sears or other A5 copies they made without the vent rib I might just try it.
What did since I also hacked down my Model 11 was used a pipe cutter to bring the barrel down to 20 inches since its a easy thing and i just needed to debur it and drill and tap a new sight.
oh and somethings I wish i found out before wasting money like a doofus is Savage 720 parts will work will some modification but the barrel and magazine tubes will not, nor will triggers, and if you want more shells a choate magazine extension for a Remington 870, 11-47 or 1100 will fit giving you more shells but it will need a 1 and a quarters inch spacer since it has the same thread pitch but not the same thread length.
Great looking mod, but you might want to check on how your muzzle device needs to be attached in order to not make an SBS My understanding is that muzzle devices. (In order to be counted in barrel length) must be pinned and welded. I am not sure soldering will meet the requirement.
It’s 1200 degree silver solder, it’s as permanent as a TIG or MIG weld. You’d honestly probably destroy the barrel if you tried to get that thing off at this point, I also made sure to check the ATFs website as long as the solder is 1100 degrees or more it counts as permanent.
Good job. I like it. Ive wanted to make one for years now. One suggestion, ive repaired my handgaurd and found the best way is to reinforce the inside with fiberglass matting and either acraglass or a strong epoxy like devcon.
all good. made a whippet sling when i was making uts-15's, but my lop was still a bit short. only objection i have to that rig but with a short enough barrel you really don't need precision, haha.
As an Orthopedic Surgeon you would be surprised on how similar it is working with wood as with bones and joints. Especially the abutments and nails. Great video!

OK, you won your self a subscriber... if you have time or interest in experimentation mess around with original gorilla glue. its a Polyurethane Adhesive that foams when it contacts moisture. so whaI I like to do is dampen all my surfaces then i mix a few drops water with gorilla glue in a cup or on a piece of foil until it starts to foam. Its my opinion that it is thinner than tite bond and its equivalents. when used properly gorilla glue is much stronger than tite bond. ITs extremely messy to use but cleans off with vinegar.
All those pins are making it more metal than wood. Good if you don’t have strong glue but, just use clear epoxy and it’ll be an even stronger bond with less work! Even some wood glues are more than enough to hold it together. Pretty sick shotgun though!
It's a recoil operated action. There is a good chance it isn't cycling because the butt stock isn't against your shoulder. This type of action requires the gun to remain relatively stationary to allow the barrel to travel the full lenght of its operation
Yeah, I kind of realized that while screwing with it. Every time you get a new mechanical action in a firearm it’s kind of a learning experience of what it likes and doesn’t like. I learned that it likes being real lubed up, helps since it doesn’t have the full butt stock.
Looks like an enjoyable project. Id like to offer a little insight on glue joints, for future projects. More Titebond does not increase the strength of the glue joint; its the absorption of the glue into the wood fibers of the two adjoining pieces. If the glue is spread thin throughout the surfaces, and clamped tight enough to allow the fibers to swell with glue before drying, then left to completely cure, the pins are unnecesary. (The clamping must not be so tight that the majority of yhe glue is forced out befor drying, there is a happy medium). You could use hardwood dowels to help keep ot aligned, and the goue would allow the dowels to become structurally part of the joint, which metal pins will never be. Properly done, a glue joint will never fail at the joint. It will become more stiff at that point, since the fibers are no longer going to have the natural flexibility of solid wood. But it will survive the same stress that caused the first break. Gibson guitar necks are testament to this. There are probably thousands of necks that have broken from a fall onto the stress point near the headstock, and have been properly repaired with no metal support and played for decades with no more failure despite having 200 lbs or more of tension on the thin neck.
If you go to a dry cleaner you can get wire hangers for curtains and heavy blankets, etc. That brass wire is very sturdy and you get lengths of up to 18". That would be a great solution for osme of your pin needs.
Saw one pop up complete on eBay with all parts and original box starting at $79 but figured a fat brass bead would fit mine project just fine. But who knows what the next project would entail hopefully a whippet, only time would tell! Keep up the lords work man @@MaximusOverhead
i really like the model 11 especially the sportsman even though its low capacity i like the look of the short grip. A5's are great too but i really like remingtons copy.
You're supposed to use a pipe wrench and you're supposed to cut it 18 and 3/4 inches that is the legal length and you're supposed to measure it from the inside of the barrel all the way to wherever cut the barrel off
It was a ribbed barrel you cannot get a pipe brunch around it, it’s 18 inches the extra 3/4 is not required. Plus once the compensator was permanently welded on it’s 19 inches overall so I’m good.
Technically a whippet gun is pretty old school roaring 20s gangster stuff is over a 100 years old at this point. And Remington did make police and riot models at the same time as commercial hunting models.

I been watching this a couple times I think you will get farther polishing the inside of the barrel where it feeds into the chamber plus your shell extractor may be shot or just the spring in the shell extractor but the way them other springs are I would tend to think they are ok. I would start by cleaning and polishing every part on the inside of it before i spent money on more parts that seem to be ok
It’s a repro cutts lookalike bushing comp, found it years ago on eBay. Always wanted to find a real Tommy gun cutts compensator and put it on a 1911 barrel.
You fired 6 @41:44 That was an old duck hunters trick called floating the forth. A shell is manipulated on top of the elevator but not inside the mag tube. That was your malfunction.Nice build btw.
But the malfunction happened before that and I only fired 4 shells with the fifth getting stuck on the carrier. Thanks for the comment I didn’t even realize I fired six, did that by complete accident haha.
@@MaximusOverhead that's what I'm saying the gun only holds 4 + 1 and yet you managed to fire six. The malfunction from the previous rounds one got trapped on top of the elevator that's how you were able to get six rounds in the gun.
Makes me want to do this with my model 11... or maybe buy a cheap one for $150 off gunbroker or pawn shop and do it with that one since mine is in pretty good condition.
I counted 6 rounds fired at 41:48. If I’m not mistaken the factory magazine capacity is 4 with one in the chamber giving you 5 rounds. I’ve watched it a couple of times and get the same count on fired rounds.

Mark Novak on the Anvil channel has excellent videos on repaired cracks and complete splits on gunstocks. I like his methods.

The Remington model 11 is greatly under rated. Mines in even worse condition and runs like a champ.
Mines in greàt shape, has trouble cycling, and sometimes when it does cycle, it'll double feed. Would a rebuild kit help out or am I just dumb?

So impressive hah I’m not gonna lie I have seen that stock listed on eBay for the past year when trying to source parts for my model 11 and wondered who tf would be crazy enough to buy it. You made it look perfect I’m jellous I didn’t think of that. Also I strongly suggest you replace the big recoil spring you can use any browning auto 5 reproduction spring I bought one for 18 bucks from MGW. Also any browning light 5 or savage 720 forearm will work in your gun. Sometimes the forearms get pounded out from the barrel contacting the forearm wood so I put a pvc buffer in mine. Also the malfunction at the end of the video is most likely because the buffer spring is weak and wasn’t able to push the shell hard enough when they occasionally bind any a5 buffer spring can be used and MGW sells them too. Have fun with this wonderful gun they are literal tanks!
Thanks!! I emailed MGW about if the springs would work in a M11, they said they weren’t compatible I guess they just have never tried it. I’ll pick up a recoil spring and buffer spring and see if that smooths out my problems.

Not sure if you're aware, but the A5's spring and friction ring set up is how you tune to the types of loads you're shooting. No doubt the busted stock you had was from someone shooting the wrong ring set up, they're known for busting the stock from violent recoil due to collapsed springs or the wrong friction ring set up. Ohh I’ve done a lot of research on that, it’s currently set up for heavy loads and recoils fairly soft for a chopped down stocked gun. The feeding issues seem to be a worn out carrier spring or something similar.
@@MaximusOverhead I saw one a few years back that someone had cut the barrel to 18", cerakoted in dessert tan and put aftermarket black synthetic stock and foregrips on. gotta admit it was pretty sharp. I'd never do that to a Belgium Browning, but If I ever run across one of the savage or sears or other A5 copies they made without the vent rib I might just try it.

What did since I also hacked down my Model 11 was used a pipe cutter to bring the barrel down to 20 inches since its a easy thing and i just needed to debur it and drill and tap a new sight.
oh and somethings I wish i found out before wasting money like a doofus is Savage 720 parts will work will some modification but the barrel and magazine tubes will not, nor will triggers, and if you want more shells a choate magazine extension for a Remington 870, 11-47 or 1100 will fit giving you more shells but it will need a 1 and a quarters inch spacer since it has the same thread pitch but not the same thread length.
Great looking mod, but you might want to check on how your muzzle device needs to be attached in order to not make an SBS My understanding is that muzzle devices. (In order to be counted in barrel length) must be pinned and welded. I am not sure soldering will meet the requirement.
It’s 1200 degree silver solder, it’s as permanent as a TIG or MIG weld. You’d honestly probably destroy the barrel if you tried to get that thing off at this point, I also made sure to check the ATFs website as long as the solder is 1100 degrees or more it counts as permanent.

Good job. I like it. Ive wanted to make one for years now. One suggestion, ive repaired my handgaurd and found the best way is to reinforce the inside with fiberglass matting and either acraglass or a strong epoxy like devcon.

instead of a syringe or poking at it, an air compressor helps to get glue, resin or glass into cracks and holes.

all good. made a whippet sling when i was making uts-15's, but my lop was still a bit short. only objection i have to that rig but with a short enough barrel you really don't need precision, haha.

@@beargillium2369 you can easily look it up you’ve got a mini super computer in your pocket or on your desk with all of human knowledge and understanding seconds away. But if you must ask me, the simplest answer is a whippet gun is a cut down auto loading shotgun that the gangsters of 1920s prohibition America popularized.

@@A.R.American1 ya I do a few projects a year, and a bunch of old projects I could just do overviews on. I kinda tacticooled a 1950s polish PPS43, and have a 30-40 Krag in the back log that I was gonna un-sporterize plus some reloading type vids maybe.

OK, you won your self a subscriber... if you have time or interest in experimentation mess around with original gorilla glue. its a Polyurethane Adhesive that foams when it contacts moisture. so whaI I like to do is dampen all my surfaces then i mix a few drops water with gorilla glue in a cup or on a piece of foil until it starts to foam. Its my opinion that it is thinner than tite bond and its equivalents. when used properly gorilla glue is much stronger than tite bond. ITs extremely messy to use but cleans off with vinegar.

All those pins are making it more metal than wood. Good if you don’t have strong glue but, just use clear epoxy and it’ll be an even stronger bond with less work! Even some wood glues are more than enough to hold it together. Pretty sick shotgun though!
It's a recoil operated action. There is a good chance it isn't cycling because the butt stock isn't against your shoulder. This type of action requires the gun to remain relatively stationary to allow the barrel to travel the full lenght of its operation
Yeah, I kind of realized that while screwing with it. Every time you get a new mechanical action in a firearm it’s kind of a learning experience of what it likes and doesn’t like. I learned that it likes being real lubed up, helps since it doesn’t have the full butt stock.

Looks like an enjoyable project. Id like to offer a little insight on glue joints, for future projects.
More Titebond does not increase the strength of the glue joint; its the absorption of the glue into the wood fibers of the two adjoining pieces. If the glue is spread thin throughout the surfaces, and clamped tight enough to allow the fibers to swell with glue before drying, then left to completely cure, the pins are unnecesary. (The clamping must not be so tight that the majority of yhe glue is forced out befor drying, there is a happy medium). You could use hardwood dowels to help keep ot aligned, and the goue would allow the dowels to become structurally part of the joint, which metal pins will never be.
Properly done, a glue joint will never fail at the joint. It will become more stiff at that point, since the fibers are no longer going to have the natural flexibility of solid wood. But it will survive the same stress that caused the first break.
Gibson guitar necks are testament to this. There are probably thousands of necks that have broken from a fall onto the stress point near the headstock, and have been properly repaired with no metal support and played for decades with no more failure despite having 200 lbs or more of tension on the thin neck.
Ya I definitely over built it, but I’m learning and the next project should probably be better. Also just have a habit of over building things haha.
Everyone will enjoy this: you can’t wear a spring out from compression. Only cycling a spring between compression/relaxation can wear it out. 🤗

If you go to a dry cleaner you can get wire hangers for curtains and heavy blankets, etc. That brass wire is very sturdy and you get lengths of up to 18".

You're supposed to use a pipe wrench and you're supposed to cut it 18 and 3/4 inches that is the legal length and you're supposed to measure it from the inside of the barrel all the way to wherever cut the barrel off
It was a ribbed barrel you cannot get a pipe brunch around it, it’s 18 inches the extra 3/4 is not required. Plus once the compensator was permanently welded on it’s 19 inches overall so I’m good.

Technically a whippet gun is pretty old school roaring 20s gangster stuff is over a 100 years old at this point. And Remington did make police and riot models at the same time as commercial hunting models.

I been watching this a couple times I think you will get farther polishing the inside of the barrel where it feeds into the chamber plus your shell extractor may be shot or just the spring in the shell extractor but the way them other springs are I would tend to think they are ok. I would start by cleaning and polishing every part on the inside of it before i spent money on more parts that seem to be ok

It’s a repro cutts lookalike bushing comp, found it years ago on eBay. Always wanted to find a real Tommy gun cutts compensator and put it on a 1911 barrel.

You fired 6 @41:44 That was an old duck hunters trick called floating the forth. A shell is manipulated on top of the elevator but not inside the mag tube. That was your malfunction.Nice build btw.
But the malfunction happened before that and I only fired 4 shells with the fifth getting stuck on the carrier. Thanks for the comment I didn’t even realize I fired six, did that by complete accident haha.
@@MaximusOverhead that's what I'm saying the gun only holds 4 + 1 and yet you managed to fire six. The malfunction from the previous rounds one got trapped on top of the elevator that's how you were able to get six rounds in the gun.

I counted 6 rounds fired at 41:48. If I’m not mistaken the factory magazine capacity is 4 with one in the chamber giving you 5 rounds. I’ve watched it a couple of times and get the same count on fired rounds.
