i used to go to your channel to look up lenses im specifically looking to buy, but now i just watch every video because i like how reliable your reviews are! keep up the good work
Once upon a time the only 85mm f/1.8 that you could buy was the overpriced Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8, allegedly a Tamron design. Now there are so many options I have lost track.
I still love my Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8 G lens but in comparison, this 7Artisans lens looks very sharp in the center. I would get this 7Artisans if I didn't already have an 85.
That’s a great lens. I still love mine and intend to stick with it and DSLR for a while longer as thanks to mirrorless cameras, you can get DSLR lenses very cheap. All I need is a super telephoto zoom and my collection will be complete.
And native lenses have become just that much more expensive. A dilemma is posed for Canon shooters however. The improved 3rd party lenses (with auto focus especially) are generally not available, and Canon's native lenses for the enthusiast market are overpriced.
We overheard a conversation between 7Artisans engineers: “So, we were told that we should supply a lens hood along with the lens. - What is a lens hood? - No idea, let’s look at Google images.”
Hi Chris, love your reviews which I have found to be very accurate and telling of the lens quality. I just watched Dustin Abbot's review of the same lens a few minutes ago. His sample does not seem to have the same corner softness issue when shot at f1.8 and lens gets substantially sharper in the corners at f2.8. Perhaps a sample variation?
I was wondering about the same thing. The QA must be pretty bad to get such large differences when the test methods are so similar. It might be pot-luck whether you get a good or fairly bad copy.
Yes. And also the lack of or weak indent on the "A" setting of the aperture ring. We could, hardly, feel it in the 50mm f1.8 although the ring has a rather tight feel to it. Also for the focus ring.
Greetings Chris, this question is off topic. Chris as a married man, who has to answer to the "BOSS" [your good lady wife], are you intending on purchasing the the recently announced Canon EOS R5 mkii? God Bless to you all, and keep up this fantastic work, your lens reviews are essential viewing prior to any purchase I make [Canon user].

I am still sceptical about Chinese Lenses, so in 2023 I got the Zeiss Batis Sonnar 85mm 1.8 T* used for US $550 (taxes included) in excellent condition. I think the Zeiss 85mm will outlive the Chinese ones !
Why everyone produce the 85mm 1.8, the give almost all the same results. They should produce new stuff, things never seen (cheaper smaller or better performing)
Watching Mr Frost's video's are always a treat, especially if a "non-conformist" lens(eg Fuji 90mm f2) sends the fan boize into a feeding frenzy of lame justifications and disbelief. Goodness gracious how can a Fuji lens be any good??? They' all supposed to be be a bit rubbish right?

And losing track of the many good lenses is a problem I enjoy having.
Thank you as always for the great review 😊😊

i dont think native lenses are worth it for the enthusiasts anymore. 3rd party lenses have become just that much better
One correction: lenses like this are also native lens, because they are produced for the same lens mount. Probably you mean 1st party lenses.
And native lenses have become just that much more expensive.

So… why choose system where u can’t afford lenses? Choose lenses, nit cameras
@@ioanandrei8814 Agreed, although I have Canon EF glass that I can adapt to a Canon mirrorless body.
I wonder which is berrer, the Viltrox 85 or the 7 Artisian 85..
at f1.8 7artisan is more sharper and no visible CA compared to the 85 viltrox
$299 is insane in itself but with this quality both IQ and build wise. there's no reason why you won't get this unless you need gm
Great thorough review, as always 😊
Biggest oddity to me is... the lenshood. It is one of a wide angle! 😮🤔
Bokeh does look fab in deed

@@EdvardKALEN 😁😂😂🤣
Ill have to wait a few decades to get this on RF
I got their new 50mm 1.8 and it’s a keeper. I’m sure this is nice as well.
Thanks for the review , APSC lens performance .
no it's full frame lens

@@trollfiddler Very True. Returning a bad copy to Amazon is easy but buying it direct form the manufacturer and returning may not be so easy.
This is cheaper in hongkong. It's only $206 with free shipping to my country. I'm thinking of getting one
nicely explained
Any word on a review of the new nikon 35mm 1.4? Would like to see that reviewed. Not seen a proper one as yet
how is this compared with the new Yongnou 85mm f1.8 DF DSM?
Great Video
I have the 50mm 1.8 7artisans and it annoys me to not have this sooner hahaha
Goooood eeeeevening
I just hope they fixed their flimsy AF-MF focus like the one on their 50mm.

I hope u notice this but their 50mm doesn't work with all camera bodies
At the same price of the used Sony... i think.. the Sony is better?
Buying used lenses are always a hit and miss experience for me. They are called "used" for a reason. 😅
@@Vendetta725 :) you are right
Used might mean "a very short life remaning" because the damage on lenses sometimes is not visible

Why some people believe cheap wired chinese lens makes their hobby photography any better or more enjoyable?
It's nice seeing 7artisans grow, but we're not there yet. That performance at F2.8 was strange to say the least. And what is going on at 5:50
