I like how MGS3 and The Boss basically serve as a way to turn everything you know about the franchise around. Suddenly you're not sure of who the good guys are. And then the story of Big Boss continues and it is revealed how the Patriots came to be and why Big Boss tried to rebel against them. By the ending of MGS4 you realize that perhaps you've been playing as a pawn of the "bad" guys all along, that the real heroes were Big Boss and Ocelot. Man... I'll miss MGS, one of the greatest pieces of art, videogames or not, that man has seen. I seriously hope Kojima, now with full creative freedom, manages to create something as great if not better with Death Stranding.

You definitely didn't pay attention ... The end of peace Walker expalins EXACTLY what big boss mindset was to eventually becoming the "villan"
He was broken after snake eater
But in peace Walker he takes action to becoming and building a mercenary group, making war a buissness and fighting for his own ideals and own missions.
The phantom pain shows big boss/venom plan in making the war economy come together
That is what made big boss the antagonist in other games. He and Zero ruined the world by going extreme routes trying to unify it

the first time I played MGS3 or MG Origins to be exact.... back in 2004/2005 right when I got to the final part where you beat The Boss and she hands you her Patriot and tells you to kill her.... I stood there for a good 5 minutes.... I didn't even press R1 at all or the fire button. I just stood there as the music played on and the meadow grass and flowers swayed. I was thinking maybe if I don't shoot her, she could be saved. But as she said "There can only be on Boss"
Because of the US Government using Jack (Big Boss) and forcing him to kill his best friend in existence...... He would slowly become the villian as time progressed. I am guessing that no-one really understood the Boss's mission at all. They all tried to copy it and fullfill it.... but most of them failed.
In reality the Boss wanted a world of peace, where people wouldn't have to kill eachother and where love can exist.
The Boss truly was the hero of Metal Gear period.

17:38 Here's something that was thankfully removed from the game. In-game voice files of The Boss heavily imply that that scene was to include an aiming mechanic, and you could mess up the killshot as she would tell you to "do it right this time".

I like how pretty much everyone connected to the field of operation for Snake Eater is a double agent. Even though The Boss had respectable and unshakable loyalty, I can't help but to think that her faith was misplaced. All her work is doing is promote war profiteering through the Philosophers. It's easy to see how anyone else would grow to reject the ludicrous orders handed to them after being treated like a disposable handkerchief for decades.

Great video. I would love one on Hot Coldman from _Peace Walker._ He's interesting since he fully believes no one has the stomach to use nukes even though two people in the MGS universe has. Volgin nuked Sokolov's research facility for kicks and the Boss nuked Grozni Grad under orders. Coldman's so ruthless but his naive belief that all humans are naturally too weak-willed to kill themselves baffles me. No wonder Zadornov manipulated him so easily.

Neat summary. Although I'm pretty sure The Boss tells Strangelove she wasn't sent to the Bay of Pigs; that was a cover for her being sent to Russia to spy on the Sputnik team. And _then_ she reunited with The Sorrow and had to kill him as part of that mission. (I like to headcanon that she also bumped into a tiny kitten Ocelot and that in Snake Eater, she always knew who he was. Hence the rather mom-like way she takes his guns away and gives him a smack xD)

Still one of the most confusing story in video games but still fun also. =) And The boss is so complex and a wonderful character. I do wish you put in that she also "returns" in MGS Peace Walker even if she not really meant to be the focus in that game but still it could have been worth mentioning. Anyway great work BitHero. as always. =)

The relation between The Boss, Snake, Ocelot, EVA and Volgin is so goddamn good! Every scene with more than two of them puts most of today's Hollywood movies to shame. The plot of this game and its scenes are such a pleasure to watch. And without being overly convoluted!
20:15 This scene. This fucking scene. My favorite scene in any video game to date. You can see Snake's disapointment and bitterness in his eyes.

I though I played each of the games in the main series. it never felt like a stealth game series since a majority of the characters acknowledge Snake's identity and at the same time attempt to be cinematic. Then for me to consider that one guy was able to take on a Metal Gear. While another pleb named Raiden takes on at lest 10 Metal Gear Rays. It seems that the series actively attempt to completely undermine its own selling point with the franchise.
I know the games can be played at higher difficulties but the nature of the series is still marred of the boss fights and the active need for the characters have long winded monologues with each other.
Not a series that I think deserves a stealth title but a decent one.

    • @citizenchris2455
      @citizenchris2455 7 років тому +2

Sons of Liberty makes the point that its entire premise is a carefully orchestrated reenactment of the Shadow Moses incident, ala the VR missions, meant to mold people like Raiden into soldiers like Snake. It's set up in such a way that Raiden was meant to win, along with the fact that he was also a child solder trained by Solidus.
Big Boss was aided by the likes of Ocelot and EVA during his mission, with intel from the CIA, not to mention the Boss herself. He was meant to succeed, and he certainly didn't do it alone.

When you mentioned the fact the Big Boss would die early due the Exposure to radiation, he lived to be 79 years old he died from foxdie due to Solid Snake having a new strand. He outlived his life and the only side affect he ended up with was he was sterile due the radiation. While others in on that test site had suffered worse a lot worse. Maybe the Boss would had died early in life due to the fact she had to deal with radiation twice in her life once in Outer space and Nevada. But we will never know because Big Boss killed her. However great video.

I like how you just sort of barely acknowledge the retroactive stuff MGS4 did with The Boss and stuck to her character and motivations from MGS3. Although an Uncharted 3-style exploration of the narrative jank in the MGS4 villains would be an interesting round-out to this Metal Gear Solid D.I. marathon.

Fun facts: Bikini Atoll actually had nuclear weapons tested on it. A popular theory on SpongeBob is that all the fish can talk because they are in bikini atoll, and mutated by radiation. This is backed by the fact that many explosions in the show are accompanied by black and white clips of nuclear testing from you guessed it :bikini atoll. The reason this is related :the voice actress who plays the big boss, plays pearl ; Mr. Krabs daughter in SpongeBob. The more you know ;)
