The ironic thing about Volgin is that he's the only flat out villain in a game about today's good becoming tomorrow's evil. Whereas Big Boss, Ocelot, Eva, The Boss, and Major Zero have sympathetic reasons for their crimes Volgin just does it for the hell of it
Volgin is one of those villains you love to hate like Tempenny in GTA San Andreas. Not all villains have to be deep and have a sad backstory and that's cool, sometimes feels good to just see some sadistic motherfucker get "fried by a bolt of lightning".
It's understandable how anyone, including him, is afraid of the Boss. She floors both him and Snake with very little effort. It's one of the best scenes in the game.
***** Spoilers ahead incase Lmao whining? How is the boss the worst character in the mgs series and the bosses from mgs 4 when those bosses had no background story only a handfull of them being children of war. The boss taught snake everything he needed, she sacrificed everything for her country, she had the ultimate story and possibly one of the most emotional times in mgs. Nobody knows the truth but she always wanted to be with snake and not let him think that she betrayed. And oh snake assrapes her with cqc? Well no shit, you're playing the game and you're meant to beat her so of course lmao. Because if you thought of it logically, how can a normal solider ( snake ) put up a fight against bosses with powers. Cause even volgin feared the boss. Snake/big boss even mentioned the day he killed the boss he was already dead. I don't see how she's the worst character when its the opposite, you had nothing to back up your original statement. What's naked snake without the boss? She even gave her child to her in country ( ocelot ). Its a 1/1000000 to find a statement like yours, so that's why my first reply was like that. If your only argument about her being a shit character is because you BEAT her in the game, then I can say the same for every boss in this franchise.
***** Wasn't a traitor. Watch the endings and more to find out. She wasn't a weakling since she gave birth to the cobras. she wasn't boring since she had lots of background story and it wasn't just a slap on the table of her being a child that was rescued from someone in war. She fought in the ww, was launched in the first ussr space rocket, finished her mission by killing her comrade the sorrow, then she sacrificed her child in war for her country, she taught snake everything, she gave away everything but she still had loyalty in her for her country. Nothing was more important to her than finishing her mission. She specifically tells nobody the truth but eva and that's not even all of it, nobody knows it fully but she leaves it specifically for snake to decide. The boss could have had a game made for her by kojima but never really happened. It just seems she isn't much compared to big boss since she's only been in 1 game. The boss is clearly an icon for all the members of the patriots, and the future generation look up to big boss.
+breadbasketbomb Its a lot, no doubt... but the legacy wouldn't even be enough to run the current US military for just 2 years... and the US already has a yearly military budget of 580 billion dollars. From 2008 to 2011 they even spent a whooping $2,83 trillion. (2832 billion to be precise)
+SuperGeronimo999 Yeah, but all Volgin needed was enough money to build a few superweapons and hire a crack squad of elite soldier. He'd still have a fat amount left over
To the Russians that's allot of money, considering how frugal they. Americans on the other hand... Give them 100 trillion and I bet they'd still loose Vietnam. Not that I'm unpatriotic.
Actually, the reason why Volgin was killed via a lightning bolt was because another character known as The Sorrow struck Volgin with lightning. Though, ever since the Phantom Pain, I guess it's now; "The reason why Volgin was struck was by a lightning bolt was because another character known as The Sorrow struck Volgin with lightning," Since it was confirmed that he survive that lightning bolt, and is now know as the Man on Fire.
I thought the lore was that he did actually die but was resuscitated and experimented on by the USSR and continued to live in a vegitative state after that out of the sheer rage and desire for revenge within him until he gets awoken by the helicopter flying over Naked and Venom's locations.
It's always so difficult to me to watch the scenes of Big Boss getting beaten up tortured... It just shows how much effort went into this game's scenario and cutscenes
It's also kind of funny how Volgin loves torture, but never ends up actually successfully getting any information out of anyone. It's also interesting how rain appears when he is struck. Generally, rain and the Sorrow have a connection to each other in the game, so perhaps it was the Sorrow that finished off Volgin?
In MGSV, Ocelot say's Volgin's dream was to build a Utopia. So he definitely wasn't evil for the sake of evil. He was just like Solidus & Senator Armstrong in having somewhat good & honorable intentions through force.
The Shagohod is an electrical machine. The controlling systems rely on electricity. Volgin used electricity to control them. This would require intimate knowledge of the Shagohod's systems.
SPOILER ALERTTTTTTT. Volgin appears again in MGS V: The Phantom Pain as the Man On Fire, having his body being experimented on by scienists. Around the time of TPP, Volgin snaps out of his long coma, and sets off to find Big Boss.At the same time, the boy who would become Psyhco Mantis was involved in a plane crash. He then immediately set off to find Big Boss as well. Both find him in Cyrpus. After the incident, Skull Face, the main villain of TPP, "recruits" Volgin, now being known as the Man On Fire, and the future Pshyco Mantis. Volgin ends up dead at the final main mission, but his body was found out of nowhere. Big Boss goes to retrieve it, only for him to come alive again on his horse. While he was being Fultoned. Then proceeds to attempt to choke Big Boss to death. During this scene, a keen eye may notice the black hands of the Man On Fire becoming a normal white, before the camera pans to the face of Volgin, finally revealing his true idenitity. Though some people who played MGS 3 called it in the first place, mainly the heavy boots and the bits of red on his uniform. After his revenge is burned up (pun intended.),he goes back into a coma. Diamond Dogs recover the body of Volgin, only for it to be destroyed some time later.
Metal Gear has always been a cross between a parody of and a tribute to 80s action movies. Hideo Kojima comes from a family of cinema lovers, and has even said he watches an entire movie before each day at work. Hell, Snake was even based off of Snake Plissken from "Escape from New York" and it's sequels---Plissken even had a cobra tattooed onto his stomach like how the Boss and Big Boss have snake shaped scars on theirs.
Abel Musa hmmm not really lol i actually hoped they bring him back but i wish i could fist fight him like in mgs3....well at least you could drive your car into him right off the cliffside lol XD in Nzoya Badiyabulu
***** yep lol u could shoot mantis after a while of shooting him. and u could also use the other car thats near a pool of water and run him through so he wont stand up. then fulton him XD
Pretty sure he would have figured out without testicle grabbing, snake wasn't even trying to talk (knew that he couldn't) and he was glaring, pretty sure that's not Raikov
Not just at the beginning of the game, but after they sent off the fear to take down snake he says kuwabara as well. Any time there was a storm he made sure that phrase, but like you mentioned the one time he didn't was right before his death.
It's the sorrow.. he strike volgan. When he takes control. Its lole when he thought of the Matis ghost. The sorrow was always good. That is why if you do a non lethal play through theres no consequences
It's covered heavily in the previous (future?) games in the series. In the original metal gear solid game it's revealed that solid and liquid snake are both clones of big boss. (Naked snake.) He was chosen because he was the most successful soldier in history and was a freak of evolution. Also, that cutscene was more realistic than digging bullets out of your arm with a knife and bandaging yourself in the middle of a gunfight like you did in actual gameplay. (Don't forget the bees!)
@HyperBitHero For real! I look forward to Devious Intent. As far as I can think of, you give the best overview of this awesomely rad villians. They are always well written and provide tons of info. Also, I've played MGS3 tons of times so that definitely made this video even better.
Volgin probably gave her the legacy because of events revealed in Portable Ops and Peace Walker. SPOILERS That is, Volgin was secretly collaborating with Coldman. That, and she's the one person he truly fears. It was a fake anyway, right? I always get confused about that bit.
Volgin wasn't working with Coldman. Volgin was trying to take over the Soviet Union, while Coldman organised Operation Snake Eater to kill both Volgin and The Boss. Volgin only gave The Boss the Philosophers Legacy because her father was also in the Philosophers, so he trusted her the most.
Tyler Moon That makes sense. In fact, the last Philosopher thing was something I feel like I've either thought of or read before. I was mostly going on what Gene said in Portable Ops, that there was a chessmaster responsible for planning most the events of Snake Eater, and Coldman seemed to be the most likely candidate considering he set up the operation. Not that it worked out the way he was hoping.
+PolarPhantom The film Volgin gave the Boss was the real one, but somewhere after she leaves with EVA, she passes EVA a fake film and gives the real one to Snake just before she dies. Since EVA believes she has the real one and has no idea Snake has the real one, she even tells Snake on her recording that she has it, (ironically) when he pulls it out his pocket, which he hands over to the US Government. Also, Volgin never collaborated with Coldman. The fact Kruschev wanted The Boss killed so America could prove its innocence in Volgins spontaneous nuke launch at Sokolovs research facility just fell in line with the CIA's plan they had anyway to eliminate The Boss out of fear of the influence she had as a legendary soldier.
Metal Gear Solid has a long and complicated history. Half of the important stuff takes place before the first Solid, so a prequel is necessary. It is meant to explain the origin of Big Boss, The Patriots, and in turn, the origin of Solid, Liquid, and Solidus Snake.
i wondered if Ivan was a masochist, making Volgin realise that when he gripped Snake by the crotch and didn't see pain in his eyes, he knew it was an impostor
There are several individuals in the metal gear universe that have powers that are supernatural in origin. (The sorrow from this very same game is a strong example.) It's very similar to the Fringe universe, now that I think about it. I think it's likely that Volgin found some kind of magical artifact that gave him his powers or something.
Volgin is probably best described as an Electrokinesist but should probably be considered an Electropath or Electropsychist, given his ability to control the Shagohod he not only controls Lightning or Electricity but can tell it what to do...
I personally find it obvious that the reason Volgin can conduct electricity and has super strength is the suit he wears underneath and the wires running under his skin.
Good video. I hope you do one on Hot Coldman since he's fascinating me since he's sadistically naive but I can totally see him actually getting far in the government since his opponents don't realize how dangerously psychotic he is and that he always has plenty of people he can pin his failures on. Zadornov plays him like a fiddle.
mano, came to your videos through one comment from yourself on neogaf (about the LoU). Think i watched all your videos already. hehe just wanted to say how i enjoyed them... XD
Anyone find this rather intriguing? The man On fire that is. Someone redirect your attention to the spontaneous combustible terrorist in the latest Iron Man. Ah, yes, the world you know it will Change very soon. :) SATURN ASCENDS!!!
i've had a similar vibe with volgin when i played mgs3. i guess the major difference is i likened him more so twoards the crazy villians that you find in the early James Bond movies. though come to think of it, there is somehing very M. Bison about him.
@HyperBitHero nope. Huge Mgs bro here, GSXP. He has a battery pack built into his rubber suit, that sends electricity thru copper(?) wires, which you can see on his arms and legs and back.
i never thought volgins fear of the boss was for comical effect. to me,it was to drive home the fact that, this woman, the boss, was the most feared and formidible adversary alive. that is,until naked snake defeated her and surpassed her. the fact that she let snake defeat her shows her conviction to her ideal. fuck man, metal gear is deep as shit for a series touting toilet humor, shameless sex appeal, and crotch grabbin.
It's his suit. The it allowed safe passage or "current" through his body. It's why the suit (including the gloves) are almost apart of a full set. Granted near the end he makes use of it without the gloves on to full effect. But that could also explain the scaring on his face and body. He probably was also a slight masochistic.
I remember in the scene when he tortures snake with electricity, he says: *my body carries an electric charge of 10 millions volts* but he never mention anything about his suit
"Well that's Volgin a brutal and incredibly powerful man that can electro-grope a woman until her pantyhose burn off." That always gets me everytime xD
Volgin knew it wasnt Raikov because Snake's Snake didnt go solid.
He just kills and has sex with everything... brilliant.
The ironic thing about Volgin is that he's the only flat out villain in a game about today's good becoming tomorrow's evil. Whereas Big Boss, Ocelot, Eva, The Boss, and Major Zero have sympathetic reasons for their crimes Volgin just does it for the hell of it
The Boss committed war crimes
Well she just followed her mission. The crimes she did commit weren't because she wanted to.
A crime is still a crime regardless of the intentions
Hm.. but is it a crime when it was her mission given to her by the highest authority?
Or is it just a tactic?
Remember, this was 100 Billion dollars IN THE 60's!!!
SettingItToWumbo Adjusted for inflation for today that would be over 8.3 trillion dollars.
That’s country buying money
Yeah, 100 billion dollars just doesn't go as far anymore, lol.
Then Volgin became, as Raiden would put it, fire: the gas transformed.
You know, creating an epic fire unicorn with wings, and riding it like a beast.
Wouldn't it be lightning transformed, seeing as how because he was struck by lighting caused him to be set ablaze?
^Not after his defeat.
Raiden is still "Plasma Snake" in my eyes
@@crescentmoon3764 yeah lol

I hope you do one on Hot Coldman since he's fascinating me since he's sadistically naive but I can totally see him actually getting far in the government since his opponents don't realize how dangerously psychotic he is and that he always has plenty of people he can pin his failures on. Zadornov plays him like a fiddle.
son of bitch came back
mano, came to your videos through one comment from yourself on neogaf (about the LoU). Think i watched all your videos already. hehe
just wanted to say how i enjoyed them...
XD
Yes, it is. Only the best for you guys.
i have not checked but im sure this is the voice actor for the soldier in team fortress 2
Good to know!
Dude...you just blew my mind away.
Anyone find this rather intriguing? The man On fire that is. Someone redirect your attention to the spontaneous combustible terrorist in the latest Iron Man. Ah, yes, the world you know it will Change very soon. :) SATURN ASCENDS!!!
He has 100 billion dollars. He'll do whatever the hell he wants! :)
I had a feeling, but wasn't sure.
i've had a similar vibe with volgin when i played mgs3. i guess the major difference is i likened him more so twoards the crazy villians that you find in the early James Bond movies. though come to think of it, there is somehing very M. Bison about him.
@HyperBitHero nope. Huge Mgs bro here, GSXP. He has a battery pack built into his rubber suit, that sends electricity thru copper(?) wires, which you can see on his arms and legs and back.
Room to interpret it as both, I'd like to think it was the Sorrow he was pretty much on board with Snake and Eva at that point anyway.
i never thought volgins fear of the boss was for comical effect. to me,it was to drive home the fact that, this woman, the boss, was the most feared and formidible adversary alive. that is,until naked snake defeated her and surpassed her. the fact that she let snake defeat her shows her conviction to her ideal. fuck man, metal gear is deep as shit for a series touting toilet humor, shameless sex appeal, and crotch grabbin.
oh and he became the man on fire in metal gear solid 5 phantom pain
+James Terry Spoiler spoiler alert
He dies when he finds out your not big boss.
I always wished they explained why he has Electro powers. I assume Whodini was involved.
It's his suit. The it allowed safe passage or "current" through his body. It's why the suit (including the gloves) are almost apart of a full set. Granted near the end he makes use of it without the gloves on to full effect. But that could also explain the scaring on his face and body. He probably was also a slight masochistic.
Marko Rabasovic I believe they do mention the scars is from the electrical abilities.
+Ozbrithian Nanomachines, son!
I remember in the scene when he tortures snake with electricity, he says: *my body carries an electric charge of 10 millions volts* but he never mention anything about his suit
Funny,in the Phantom Pain trailer you can see his silhoutte on fire, just like in the time of his death.
I pushed everything back about 2 weeks because I was focusing on school. I'll be sure to get the next one out quicker.
"Well that's Volgin a brutal and incredibly powerful man that can electro-grope a woman until her pantyhose burn off."
That always gets me everytime xD
Volgin, to me, is kinda like a stereotypical Bond villain which doesn't surprise me since MGS3 does resemble a James Bond movie.
I just finished a new video. It isn't a Devious Intent, but a small video on The Last of Us. It'll go up in a day or two.
