  • Whenever anyone talk about the greatest movie soundtrack of the 80s you hear the usual suspects… Top Gun, Footloose, some might say Dirty Dancing.. or any of the soundtracks from John Hughes films from Some Kind of Wonderful to the Breakfast Club to Pretty In Pink… but the soundtrack to Rocky IV is worthy of consideration... Up next I talk to several artist who participated the franchise defining film soundtrack. Eye of the Tiger was great but Rocky IV was a better overall soundtrack album with Burning Heart by Survivor, No Easy Way Out by Robert Tepper and of course Hearts on Fire by John Cafferty of the Beaver Brown Band!. Sylvester Stallone flew John Cafferty down to where he was filming Rambo First Blood part 2 and dressing full Rambo garb asked John to sing the song that would go over the 80s greatest movie montage. He was a big fan of John’s work from Eddie and the Cruisers… and so it was that he recorded the legendary song played at the end of Rocky IV and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say the song stopped the Cold War.. Ok I’m being funny now. Here is the definitive story of the Rocky IV soundtrack with interviews with John Cafferty and Jim Peterik of Survivor who co-wrote Burning Heart that went to #2… it’s an 80s marathon coming up…

I’m excited to share a new show that we will be doing from time to time here … we’ve done a few of these in the past and just haven’t named the show. So today I”m doing. it. I’m going to call it soundtrack the stories behind the greatest movie music of all time. In the past we’ve covered Ferris Bueller’s Day off and then Top Gun where we have the actual artist take us through the music. Well today we’re covering the music behind one the 80s greatest sequels. One fo the highest growing movies of 1985 into 1986 Rocky IV. It was just barely name checked in the latest season of Cobra Kai when Johnny Lawrence and Daniel Larusso are trying to get their karate students into the international tournament. Johnny and Daniel don’t have all of the high tech equipment that their competition the pony tailed villain Terry Silver has so they use unorthodox methods just like Miyagi did before. .. As their team tries out in front of the judges Johnny Explains their style…. I love that part. I was watching it with my 14 year old and we were high fiving we loved it so much...
I love that scene. Truly that Montage Scene is the greatest in movies history. Everyone tried to copy it after but no on has equaled it. The song helps make that training montage scene.. Every 80s kid knows it by heart. which is appropriately titled Hearts on Fire by king of the bar bands mr. John Cafferty.

Well said, Professor! I agree with you 100%. The 80s was a time of hope and where anything seemed possible. There was so much joy and love in the music. Being patriotic and proud to be an American was a good thing. I'm so glad I grew up in the 80s. Today it's all gone. I couldn't imagine growing up now with social media and all division, hatred, anti-America propaganda not to mention the god awful "music" released today.

I think that the soundtrack in eighties movies were just as important, with some more, than who was staring in the movie. My part time job through high school and college was at an independent video store. Which was the best part time job ever.
Sylvester Stallone understood this, the man’s a genius, very well. But the Rocky IV soundtrack was particularly good and stands out over the rest. People can’t seem to remember that he wrote most of those movies.
I agree with you about the eighties, how everything was all about overcoming monumental obstacles to come out on top. I remember coming out of the theatre pumped.
I remember waiting two hours in line to see the new movie on opening day.
I remember getting up with everyone else at the end of the movie to give it a standing ovation, though that may sound stupid now.
I remember going home afterwards feeling like I could take on the world, and win. This is why I watched those same movies with my kids, and they loved them. They felt the same as I did back then.
Childhood should be about doing the impossible, not about what’s going on in world now.

1980's Music soundtracks and music in general had such a "can-do" spirit. We always felt we had a reason to believe. I went through hard times in the 80's yet having the songs of the 80's in our background you always believed you had a chance. Music now feeds the despair. My grandkids often seek out 80's songs for positivity. One of my favorite stories with one of our granddaughters was a song along with her, my wife and myself singing "Break My Stride" together sitting by a fire. I'll never forget it. I think the kids are always looking for that up tempo sound we got to enjoy.

The glaring omission from your discussion is VISION QUEST (1985). Two big hits with Madonna "Crazy for You" and Journey "Only the Young." Every other song on the movie was a big 80s act. The score was by Tangerine Dream. But above all, the movie was a lot better film than most of the others on your list! Great dialogue, terrific performances by Matthew Modine and Linda Fiorentino, and a whole lot of memorable supporting characters including Michael Shoeffler's Kuch, and a fearsome opponent - The Shute. Virtually every father figure in the film was a positive role model, teaching Louden lessons about defending a woman's honor, staying focused on your goals, making the most of your opportunities, honoring your family's legacy... This is one of the last Hollywood films that taught boys how to be men. Something that has been totally lost in today's cinema.

I'd move back to Ft Lauderdale and my brother would bust my chops cause I'd picked up the Philly accent again and he'd say things like "Yo Paulie, Yo Adrien...I know like ya know I dunno' Paulie .."
Now Yo is a Hip Hop term but back in the 80s it was pure Philly.
I watch Rocky now and man , it's a sentimental journey back to Philly and back to the 80s . A one two punch of nostalgia! A little bit melancholy to see my old stomping grounds since I haven't been back since 86 or so.
The Rocky movies really were so special to my friends and I. We'd say Drago's "I must break you. " And respond with Rocky's "Go for It"
Great inspiring score and songs for great inspiring movies!
Some say Rocky 1 was the only good one but I've seen all 6 and both Creed's and I just love the character Rocky. I love em all!
It's said that Stallone wrote the screenplay in 48 hrs to the 1st one that won Best picture which is really quite amazing and I like to believe it's true even if some don't believe it's possible.
The music, the films are great works of art that will stand the test of time just like Michelangelo's Cystine Chapel ceiling.
I enjoyed the interview with John and _his_ Philly accent and Stallone stories. This was a great one and now it's got a name... Soundtrack. No confusion there huh? 🤣
    Keep em' comin' Professor. ✌️♥️🎸🎶🙏

I remember driving my older sister crazy with this soundtrack back in the day. She threatened to ban me from using her boom box because of it. Didn't matter, I'd just pop it in my walkman and belt the songs out, which obviously was waaaaaaaaaaaay worse than hearing the artists over and over lol. Good times

My son just told me last week the 1980s was the best time to grow up and how lucky I was. I always considered it seemed so good because the end of the 1970s became so bad. Inflation, spiking interest rates, cost of food sky rocketing, etc., but I guess the 1980s did have a lot to be thankful for. If you use google maps be thankful for the Starwars program, that was a big part of it, mapping the world. Thanks for another video about something good Prof. We need to watch the old movies and let the new ones that are negative wither on the vine so they make better movies. Hope you all stay safe and healthy.

I love to sing, and I still sing No Easy Way Out by Robert Tepper from Rocky 4, often. Not only is it’s placement perfect with what is going on in the movie at the time, the song, itself is just wringing with emotion. It is such an experience to sing it. As a guy who really loses himself in the emotion of the song he sings, let me tell you, that is very easy to do with this song. It is a guilty pleasure to sing this and go to another place.

As great as the Rocky IV training montage is, for me, nothing will ever top the twin knockouts of the Rocky I training montage and final fight montage. It just doesn't get any better or more inspirational than marrying Sly's running through the streets of Philly or fighting (surviving?) against Apollo with the brilliant and majestic music of Bill Conti. It's the definition of resiliency and rising above. Iconic and untouchable, for me. Thanks for the segment!

I was so excited to see this Soundtrack featured--still is one of the most powerful movies (in my opinion)--the perfect blend of music and storyline. My poor kids have watched it so much they actually gave me the DVD compilation with all the Rocky movies included and my youngest included the Rocky Four Soundtrack, although as he put it I know you own most of the songs. Once a year I teach a Rocky themed playlist for my Spin class--I get emotional and still get goose bumps for most of the songs--but the movie premise -- supporting the underdog is what I cherish the most, LOVE< LOVE
