- Today on #MaJelivReactions, it’s time for MOON KNIGHT!!
Welcome to another series of reactions as we cover the MCU’s #MoonKnight on Disney Plus starring the ever versatile #OscarIssac facing off with Arthur Harrow played by the legendary Ethan Hawke.
In this first episode much that was promised in the intriguing trailer has been delivered.

Enter Steven Grant the museum employee with a nightmare series of blackouts signifying he’s not fully aware of who or what he is when he blacks out.
We discover a noble and meek spirited Steven struggles to sleep and to keep up with the consequences of someone who lives inside him. We can hear and see the things he encounters and it sends us on a whirlwind of puzzling moments.
For instance, when Steven wakes up on the outskirts of some undisclosed town that resembles a Swiss alps paradise, except for the men shooting at him, as they try to recover a golden scarab he hides in his pocket, we realize along with Steven that he’s jumped out of a castle like building landing on his face and breaking his jaw!!
Then he faces off with Arthur Harrow, a mysterious man, whom the townspeople kneel to and has ties to Ammit the Egyptian God.
As Steven flees back to London he blacks out again….was it all a dream or the beginning of an awakening to a terrible and lonely reality?

I think this is the first ever Marvel show or movie that I don't want to know anything and just want to watch and figure out what is going on with the characters. I have no clue where this is going and I love it.
This is what i feel when i watch WandaVision back than.
yeah, and to me, its kinda great that most of the shots/scenes from the trailer majority or mostly are in this first episode, so it will kinda make us discover and figure out more stuff with the characters and storyline

It was only while watching this that I realized that Marc jumped out of the castle window the goon was looking down from. Probably knocked himself out and gave Steven the chance to wake up.

Fish change, too me the reason behind all that was too show when he was gone in the Alps for multiple days the fish died. So then Marc replaced the fish to not "alert" Steven, to put everything back in order just like he probably had to do with the sand, tape and everything else.
There is a theory that Marc goes out the window instead of the door. That is why the tape never breaks or the sand moves etc.
Those guys should watch turning red they will really like it

The goldfish dying doesn't actually make a lot of sense because unless the fish was extremely sick...they absolutely can last a couple days without food. They can last up to a week with no food. But maybe it WAS sick and passed naturally...it certainly wasn't from starvation after only 3 days.
I'm not familiar with this character, and I have no idea where they'll be going, but I loved it and I'm ready for the ride. I love how each series has a unique style from all the others, keeping things fresh.
Just a heads up it is no longer called split personality or multiple personality disorder any more it is now called Dissociative identity disorder and the personality’s are real people with real memories just stuck inside one mind one body.
This was a good way of showing how involuntary alter changes are. For what I know about DiD, you can really lose days even when one of you alters decides to front. Seems Steven is a fairly new-ish alter so whatever happened to Marc to make Steven take over for so long must’ve pretty large trauma (which alters are born/created which is through Massive trauma). I appreciate the fact they (the host and alters) Haven’t made an “Evil” alter yet. Again DiD is about managing trauma not causing it. Yes, some alters (known as Protecters) can be rougher on the outside ( aka in front while the host is in the mind). But, never straight-up causing problems on purpose only to protect the host and the other alters. And Marc is the host as for Steven he is the one who is the most out aka in front so he can have some social life.
Something I loved is how they put us in the perspective of Steven throughout the entire episode. Because Marc is the main host body, and the one who was resurrected by Khonshu, it puts us the viewer in Steven’s shoes as if we’re experiencing his mental troubles and questioning of reality with him. Very genius imo. And I’m sure we’ll get to see Marc’s comic origin and becoming MK (or a version of it) through flashbacks. As someone who’s been a fan of Moon Knight for years, I was incredibly happy with how this first episode was, and love that they saved the suit reveal towards the end. Honestly gets a 10/10 from me
Awesome episode. Moon Knight fan since 1993. The visuals in this episode were glorious. I'm getting Fight Club, Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, The Mummy, Jacob's Ladder, and Donnie Darko vibes from this show.

Good start to the show. Good commentary from you guys. I agree with the youngest son, it was also my favourite first episode of the Disney+ shows. A great performance from Oscar Isaac. This is another example of what separates Marvel from the rest; they hire A-list actors. And they're not resting on their laurels, taking us into different worlds with each show and movie.

Always dig your reactions fam. Been a fan of MK for some years. This was such a dope episode. Oscar Isaac is a phenom, no doubt about it. Really digging the darker/ horror vibes in this series. And also dipping into the cosmic aspect of the MCU. Can’t wait for the next episode. Ima tune in with y’all too. Great discussion and insight on your parts.

The Cinematography & music of this episode was so on point. I'm really looking forward to Oscar Issac's greatness. He's doing both British & American accents at the same time is so cool.

It's funny what you said about the use of the word "Bollocks!" It's more of a swear word over here in the U.K., so I was very amused by it getting used by Steven in this.

I feel like Steven is actually the invading personality and Mark is the main personality. Just another way for Marvel to flip the show on its head and keep us as the audience guessing.

@@WheresWaldo05 oh cool, I didn't know that. This series is gonna be awesome. The only other Marvel series I was this excited for after watching the first episode is Wandavision... so many potential routes they can take and I'm loving the suspense of it all.
The word you are looking for is host. Marc is the host in the comics. The person who does day-to-day stuff like go to work and socialize.
There is no "original personality" in DID due to how and when the disorder forms in children(it forms before the personality is solidified). DID systems explain it like this " if you shatter a glass bowl which piece is the original bowl?" Or "which slice of orange is the original orange?" The answer being it doesn't exist because they are parts of a whole. Alters in DID function the same way. All alters are equally real people. And yeah, even Marc is considered an alter. He isn't " the real one" or anything like that. ALL distinct consciousnesses are alters. I'd say, in the show, Marc and Steven are actually co-hosting meaning they BOTH are doing day-to-day stuff. Marc having his job and relationships. And Steven having the same. They seem to be sharing the role OR Steven had only recently taken over as the host and got a job since Layla hadn't heard from Marc in a couple months.
@@AnxietyRat so why do Marc say after this job Steven will never hear from him again. That doesn't sound like a DID Co hosting situation. Plus the term parasite is used which suggests a more, externally invading entity rather than a cohabiting one.
@@juliant yeah, alters CAN go dorment willingly and unwillingly. So he probably has plans to go dorment after whatever happens... And let Steven be the full time host. That probably won't actually happen...but that's what Marc is promising to Steven will happen.
The thing chasing him in the museum is a jackal, mythical dog like creature from Egyptian mythology. They served the deities and statues of them were often sculpted or drawn to demonstrate a person or place was supposedly protected by the gods of the region. Another Easter egg in the episode was the name Duchamp in the missed calls on the (untraceable) burner phone he had in his wall. Frenchie Dunchamp is an ally of Mark’s who became his pilot when he needed to fly to/from different places. Also of note, veteran Oscar winning actor F. Murray Abraham is the voice of Khonshu.
Good thing you saved us from finding anything out about Frenchie Dunchamp/Duchamp from the show we're planning on watching. How annoying would it be should we meet Duchamp and need to learn about the character via action and dialog?

@@Azx12345 it might be Marc following Arthur or leading him to somewhere else but Steven clicked in at wrong time and when Arthur saw that he came to know it is Steven and followed him to museum…

Oscar Isaac is soo great in this!! He makes you feel everything he is feeling and the comedic physical performance he is doing is so top notch! Im so excited to go on this mysterious ride with him.

In The Comics, Ethan Hawke`s character(Arthur Harrow) was a mad scientist who got partially disfigured in a lab accident,here he`s reimagined as a New Age cult leader connected to the Egyptian pantheon like Marc/Steven himself.Ammit was along with Anubis and Osiris one of the gods of judgment and the Underworld.(Which,contrary to Western belief, is not Hell but simply the destination of all mortal souls in Greek,Norse and Egyptian Mythology.)

You might find it interesting to know that Moon Knight was a member of Hawkeye's West Coast Avengers in the comics along with Wanda, Vision, US Agent, War Machine (Rhodie) and Kate Bishop. Hawkeye's wife was also a member by the name of Mockingbird and if you watched the movie Avengers Age of Ultron you would have seen her symbol on a watch. My favorite West Coast Avenger was Wonder Man and if you watched WandaVision you would have seen a replica of his brother's helmet there.
Ammit is a goddess that worked in tandem with Anubis in determining the fates of souls in the afterlife. Anubis prepares the bodies, and weighs the hearts of the deceased against the feather of truth. If the heart is lighter than the feather, the souls pass on to the afterlife unhindered. If the heart is heavier, it was a sure sign of evil, and Ammit devours the hearts of evildoers.
Ammit was portrayed as having the head of a crocodile, the front legs of a lion, and the back half of a hippo. If you look closely at the cane and the tattoo on Arthur Harrow's arm, twin crocodile heads are marked on both of them.

Marc has Dissociative Personality Disorder ( formally Multiple Personality Disorder ), which is why he often blanks out or has lapses in judgememt/memory. Him forgetting about his date in the beginning is probably because another alter was present ── like his alter Jack Lockley, who was probably the one that asked the woman out, not Steven. The show does a great job at showing how the dominant alter ( Steven, in this circumstance ) is consciously aware of the existence of Marc Spector, where a lot of patients with DID have the ability to communicate and listen to alters when they are not expressive. It's also important to note that calling alters 'personalities' or 'alter egos' suggests that Steven is consciously making an effort to change his behavior or the way he acts to be someone else, when in reality, these things are out of a person's control with DID. alters do not share a conscience, and they exists on different planes of existence with their own unique traits, behaviors, accents (Steven vs. Marc / english vs. american), etc.. there have been circumstances where someone with DID has the sudden ability to speak foreign languages or has an insurmountable amount of knowledge in a certain field that they would have otherwise never understood. the small details of Steven communicating with Marc or even acknowledging him in the mirror are really important parts of his struggle with DID, and how they edit the 'switch' (when one alter shifts to another). Switches are often triggered, which means what we've seen so far is Steven switches are triggered by high stress situations when he is afraid. He often switches when he is outnumbered or out of his element (fighting the jackal), reverting to an alter that is more apt for the job (Marc). Marc is the host, meaning he is the person who owns the body. Steven is an alter he probably resorted to as a means to cope with stress or over Moonknight/Khonshu all together.
Mad that this is the first marvel show about a character we've never met before. Everyone else was already either an avenger or a character we'd already met in previous films! Such a fascinating show!

Yea remember it is a show and they got a budget, definitely saving it for future episodes, but I totally agree with you. I give this episode a 9/10 just because of the cgi from the truck scene, still the best first episode we seen from a mcu disney+ show imo.
@@respect_zy yes,but Kevin feige clearly said that there will no compromise on budget of the shows, and previce marvel shows like loki and wanda vision , Winter soldier has good cgi, they knewed it that this shows gonna get hitt,so why budget issue🤔anyway, like u said i hope so in next episodes the vfx and cgi works are gonna v good👍👍 because believe it or nor, in these type of series the cgi really effect the experience of watching ✌️

Marc has a girlfriend, Steven spoke to her on the cell phone he found so he wasn’t making any dates and Steven didn’t remember the date so that leaves Jake, his third personality. The beast in the bathroom was a jackal, they are usually minions of Anubis so I’m not sure why they are working for Ammit, not a god but somewhat an Egyptian demon and that’s who Ethan Hawke’s character is working for. Steven was putting away stuffed animals in the back that make up Amitt, a alligator head, a lion front body, a hippo back body. I’m getting the feeling that the Egyptian gods are around Steven looking for the avatar of Khonshu, Marc but Steven doesn’t recognize them even though he’s fascinated with Egyptian mythology. Marc knows what’s going on, he knows he made a deal with Khonshu, Khonshu knows about Steven and he seems to think of him more so as a parasite than the owner of the actual body. Marc has set up this entire life for Steven, the post cards he gets, switching out the dead fish every time Steven is gone for days, the phone number for Steven’s mother who doesn’t exist and who Steven never realizes he never speaks to because he’s constantly calling her answering machine and leaving messages. His only friend is the street performer painted gold who may be a character from the books that knows all three personalities and helps Marc and Jake with information. We have met three personalities, got a hint of one and have yet to meet Mr. Knight, another personality. I think this may end up being my favorite show so far. 🌛

Edit: I still don’t understand, though, why “bollocks!” is an exclamation for when something unfortunate happens, but something is called the “dog’s bollocks” when it’s good. Seems weird to favor a dog’s balls like that, but okay.
