- In 1959 Britain's biggest cinema company, the Rank Organisation, decided to replace its newsreels with a series of short, quirky, topical documentaries that examined all aspects of life in Britain. For the next ten years, Look at Life chronicled - on high-grade 35mm colour film - the changing face of British society, industry and culture. Britain on Film draws upon the 500 films in this unique archive to offer illuminating and often surprising insights into what became a pivotal decade in modern British history. The series shows how Look at Life reflected the radical shifts in the position of women in British society, and shows how the country adapted to the new demands and expectations of women at home, in the workplace and at play.

My first good bike was a Raleigh, my first motorcycle was a BSA, my first good stereo was a Roberts, my first PDA was a Psion, and my first new car was an MGB - and I live in the US! It wasn't unusual in the 50's and 60's to look for to Britain for high quality and innovation. There was nothing in the world like a Psion 3 when it first came out, and no US car was anywhere near as fun to drive as an MGB. Starting in the 70's this all went to hell. I don't know how it all started, but it's well over by now. I can't think of the last British product I bought other than the odd tin of jam.
We lost our empire, we forced it to sell us cheap raw materials or just took them by force, then we made it into stuff and forced them to buy the stuff at prices that we.re far too high given the economies of scale of exporting to the quarter of the planet.
Britain joined the EU in 1973 or the EC as it was called at the time, that is what happened. Pretty hard to keep a strong economy when your Government freely gives control over it's own resources away.

The market decides and the market didn't want the British motorcycles as they weren't as good as the competition.
Watching these films makes me envision what I want heaven to be; living in a prosperous 1960s forever.

Only a notebook shows that someone’s bought and someone has sold.... Can you imagine trying to operate a system like that... with nationalities other than honest Europeans? Some people from other parts of the world ? How many days before chaos would reign?
Supermarkets, they killed the corner shops,independent retailers, high streets,milk rounds..
No Rachel you and the general public are to blame. You like most would rather shop in a supermarket as everything is there under one roof.
rogerand out well said. I’m from the U.K. but live in the States. Walmart gets blamed for doing that here and yet isn’t it the people willing to buy cheap stuff from China that are truly to blame for the smaller shops going under. Now there are places where Walmart, after decimating the local businesses, is pulling out of certain locations. Communities left with nothing. No where to shop, not even the low paying jobs Walmart is famous for. It’s horrible. I do everything I can to buy local, even avoiding amazon unless I can’t get it from or order it from a local shop. Sadly I’m in the minority now.
@@prepperjonpnw6482 Agreed. In my town, WalMart opened a few miles away and was blamed for killing the locally owned stores, which have since been replaced with Dollar Tree and Dollar General. Cheap crap that people willingly buy. Sad.
Supermarkets shaft farmers so that they can offer prices too good to resist. Of course supermarkets are to blame

@@acptelford1307 Yes, I've owned many British made bikes, over the years. Some of them were very well made. They were heavy but they would have become lighter, as manufacturing techniques and materials improved over time. Knocking British industry became a national pastime in the 1970s. It's the reason we make so little nowadays - because our own citizens had such little faith in Britain or themselves. We went on strike because the toilet paper was the wrong colour. The Asians laughed all the way to the bank, whilst we were happy to buy foreign goods "due to an oily patch on their garage floor". Now, everything that comes into the country is made in China. It's junk (nowhere near as good as British produce used to be) and it doesn't last 5 minutes - but nobody seems to care, because it's cheap and it satisfies our lust for immediate gratification.

The scene is set by the superb jazzy fanfares - with slightly disturbing harmonies and suspensions - relieved by the the swinging Hammond organ.
What follows is almost too absorbing.
Manufacturing at all levels is sadly now a thing of the past. And to think that the industrial revolution started in the UK is amazing to say the least!
@@davidpanton3192 I served an engineering apprenticeship in Coventry, England when UK was an example to the world. Cars, machine tools and aircraft
to name a few. Shipbuilding and locomotive manufacturing in other areas of the country. Then what do they manufacture now at any sizeable industrial level? It seems to me that 'service industry' occupations are the mainstay. Greetings from an 'old school' Brit residing in the USA.
It couldn't compete with others doing it better or on a larger scale.
@@paulbroderick8438 In the sixties I was an apprentice at what is now the JLR car factory in Castle Bromwich. In those days, companies regarded apprentices as an investment, not just as a way of getting money off the Government then getting rid of them. The training was such a high standard, that many lads like yourself were able to get jobs anywhere in the World.

Very enjoyable watch, taking me back to the world in which I grew up as a child. I can fully understand the nostalgia for that time which many comments show. However, progress of sorts has been made; women in commercial/work contexts in this film are all (with one exception, I think) all shown in subservient roles. The women slave away, the men look on with clipboards; the woman goes into the shop to buy the meat, which is then taken out to be reweighed (to confirm the accuracy of the scales) BY MEN. One forgets just how male-dominated the workplace was.
