  • In 1959 Britain's biggest cinema company, the Rank Organisation, decided to replace its newsreels with a series of short, quirky, topical documentaries that examined all aspects of life in Britain. For the next ten years, Look at Life chronicled - on high-grade 35mm colour film - the changing face of British society, industry and culture. Britain on Film draws upon the 500 films in this unique archive to offer illuminating and often surprising insights into what became a pivotal decade in modern British history. The series shows how Look at Life reflected the radical shifts in the position of women in British society, and shows how the country adapted to the new demands and expectations of women at home, in the workplace and at play.

My grandfather was an American sailor in the 1950s stationed in Hong Kong, still under British control at the time. He always said he got along and had some hilarious stories with the British sailors of the Royal Navy.

As a former Royal Marine residing in SE Asia for 35 years the British are still respected. The people commenting otherwise have never been in a position or likely to ever to past real judgement. Yes business was at the back of this but the people up the front meant well. Per Mare Per Terram.

Prepperjohn, now all we have to do is to persuade our children to put their phones and xBox controllers down for 40 minutes to watch these short clips.
It’s almost impossible to describe the pride we have in our culture and background without these clips.

A great achievement by the Rank Organisation, a marvellous, beautifully & masterfully-produced series, so important for the annals of history: thank you for posting on UA-cam...... and shame on the ridiculous person who gave a thumbs-down! This is probably his/her sole claim-to-fame, so enjoy it for the fifteen seconds!

Beautifully shot. Nearly as beautifully ignoring of the reasons why Britian was in Hong Kong in the first place. i.e. the opium wars. But lets not let facts get in the way of an empire narrative, eh?

Britain had the common sense to dump the Empire and let them look after themselves a shame that they ever collected it in the first place as it brought them nothing but grief , the working class Brits got nothing but hardship out of the centuries of folly .

What about tea and sugar and raw materials? Britain is still a major player on the world stage with the fifth largest economy. No small feat for an island the size it is. This is due entirely because Britain was an empire. Not to mention all of the good things it brought to far away place (and bad things) such as technology and medicine and education. Do you believe that even half those places would have any idea on how to be a modern nation if Britain hadn’t first taught them? Things such as police and a fair system of laws that govern all no matter their station in life. I get tired of people bashing on the “Empire” with no real thought or knowledge on the subject. I do not romanticise the past but I do acknowledge the greatness of it. Do you realize that the greatest nation the world has ever seen and the only superpower left was once a colony in the British Empire? With a Constitution written by middle aged white Englishman. The world was a much different place 50, 100, 200+ years ago.

This is a fantastic film. With all the negative narratives of the “Empire”, there was a lot of good…very good. One’s view of the Empire should resist binary choices, bad v good. The truth lies elsewhere.
