"They were perfectly honest." I need to bury deep bad habits that I have developed over the years that have been masking as good ones. Thanks, Brother Hilton!
Thank you for sharing your DVD story (and also your experience in Jerusalem). I have a somewhat similar situation. I’m sorry to say that I’m still not quite able to give up the “little” thing that He has asked of me. I know that this seemingly small rebellion is holding me back from so much. Unfortunately, every time I bury it, I choose a shallow hole, inconvenient but accessible. I think I may need to change my perspective. Like your students, there is a bright side to giving up my entertainment choices that are not in keeping with the gospel standard. I’ve been too focused on the wrong part of the equation. Thanks for the great points to ponder.
Brother Hilton your classes always have such inspiration and give others thoughts on these study chapters. I've been home less for a while and I know that I had protection and help with contacting family. I love the faith in the new people Amon or Anti Nephi Lehi Such faith and happiness in learning Truths or Gospel It's Joyful ❤ 29:06 Thank you for each class 32:53
Brother Hilton, hearing your little confession (s) obviously brings to mind each listeners also, including me. It is also a fascinating lesson I am learning with regards to documenting trials and sorrows, not just positive things, which of course, now that I see it in black an white is Pollyannishly prosposterous to think people only want to hear from /about successes. I just remember getting a Christmas letter one year that was more like a dump of depressing highlights. I determined that day, that I would mine my shining gems for my Christmas letters instead of my lumps of coal. I think now just being authentic and gleaning with proper reflection in whatever is real but not wallowing in the misery is what the Spirit can testify as to the blessing of the atonement in whatever circumstance we actually live. Ahh wisdom with age and suffering... who knew?
24:20 I served in Ukraine back in 2008 and served in the area the Bevzyuk family lived in. Vova is one of the most incredible members I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting and associating with. I remember him telling me his conversion story so as soon as I heard that sister talking about a man named Vladimir meeting the missionaries in France, my ears immediately perked up! That story hit me very close to home - I’m so glad to hear his family is safe!
@jamison216 - I’m the one in the video and the whole family is doing so good! They are so brave and strong. It is a joy and blessing to be a small part of their story.
@johnhiltonii I am actively praying that you will continue to teach this master class when we begin our studies in The Doctrine and Covenants next year. I cannot tell you how much these classes have helped me, and have brought me closer to The Savior! It’s a tool in my “tool box” of learning that I have greatly benefited from, every week!
You pointed out Anti-Nephi-Lehi has a unique voice in the BoM calling God “our great God.” I find this super interesting considering a few chapters earlier in Alma 18 and Alma 22 we read about Ammon and Aaron teaching King Lamoni and his father. Alma 18 we read “5 Now this was the tradition of Lamoni, which he had received from his father, that there was a Great Spirit. Notwithstanding they believed in a Great Spirit.” Then later “26 And then Ammon said: Believest thou that there is a Great Spirit? 27 And he said, Yea. 28 And Ammon said: This is God. And Ammon said unto him again: Believest thou that this Great Spirit, who is God, created all things which are in heaven and in the earth?” The Lamanites called their deity “great spirit” until Ammon and Aaron taught them that this “great spirit” was actually the “great God.” It makes sense this would become God’s title for them as this was their tradition and what they had been taught. Also, I find it interesting I searched the word “great” through these chapters and the Lamanites constantly use the word “great” throughout all their speech! JS is a G for real haha
I had it explained to me that the "Anti" in Anti Nephi Lehi means "mirror image". That makes so much sense to me. They wanted to take on the excellent reflected image of wonderful Nephi and Lehi.
"after all we can do" is something I have interpreted in terms of chronology. Meaning, we cannot be saved while our work on earth is ongoing. We can only be saved after we have completed our lives. Am I wrong on this? I didn't really share this until opponents of the church brought it up as a different meaning. Is my meaning not holding water?
Helping true refugees is definitely Christlike. However in this day and age there are a lot of people that are not actual refugees but just wanting to take advantage of opportunities in this country. But they are perfectly capable of living a life in their own country. We can’t take all 60 million so I think as long as refugees are properly vetted so we know that they are legitimate we shouldDefinitely help them. And it’s important since the Lord requires us to follow the laws of the land that we bring refugees in legally. So we can be perfectly honest

I've always thought of it as that "all we can do" is to repent, like they say, "it was all we could do to repent."

Agree, it’s really hard to know.
