I just graduated 5 months ago and got a full time job right now. I studied Psychology and took a few Cognitive Science courses during my last quarter because its one of the graduate requirement. I really enjoyed it. I would say its probably the best course I've ever experience during college. I wish I know what Cognitive Science is earlier. I really want to get into UX industry, I looked into other designer's work on Behance...but it's really tough to learn it by myself, and I have no idea how to make up a project/research by myself. Bootcamps are kind of expensive since I just started to work. Any advise? :(
I would try to find out if you like to do UX or UX research (UXR). They are related, they work together, but different roles. If you like more on the cognition and psych side, then maybe you like being a researcher. For UX, I have outlined a few ways to self teach (I pretty much taught myself), you can find it in this video ua-cam.com/video/dD7PDxKyRYI/v-deo.html and maybe other videos on this playlist ua-cam.com/video/OfArmDSypIs/v-deo.html For UXR, it's more on researching users (need finding, empathy study, user journey, pain point finding, behavior finding, usability testing). You will do a lot on things such as talk to people, make recommendation for ux designers, synthesize findings, find out best practices, etc. You can interview/talk/chat with existing research in various companies thru linkedin or email to see how they started their career and what advise they might have for you. I am not a UXR so I only have limited knowledge in that area haha. You can perhaps read some HCI papers (there are a ton of them from academia) and just google ux research findings. When you read enough, you should know what it is about and start to do your own research to get into this field. Does this help?
Hi Lina! Thanks for the question. Generally speaking, yes, you need to go back to school after the internship to be qualified for the internship. However, I have seen my other intern peers not going back to school after because something in their life changed (e.g. decided not to do grad school), so there are exceptions. I think as soon as you plan to go back to school or know you will attend school after the internship, you will be qualified. That's actually what some of the applications will ask, and if you fill in a "no", you will automatically be rejected. Hope that helps!
Hi Aman, mine was in 2017 and I believe I submitted my application on Jan 6, 2017, so it would be a good idea to gather everything and have your portfolio ready during Christmas break.

Hi, I don't think they limit who can apply or not, so you can definitely apply! But if you are already a mid level UX designer, wouldn't there be better options than an UX internship?
