I am a fan of Barbara Stanwyck for a number of reasons. First of all, I have a ton of admiration for her, as a person. She had a rotten, horrific childhood, which stayed with her for the entirety of her life. She wasn't full of self-pity because of it. She went ahead and lived her life, on her own terms, learning all the while. This woman read a book a day. She memorized the entirety of every script for every movie she was ever a part of. She took all the feelings she had gathered on the way and found a way to use them in everything she every portrayed on the screen. She is the MOST natural, believable actress that ever lived! She had a great respect for her profession, which she loved with all her heart and that showed in every part she ever played as well. I have a great admiration for her strength, and ability to carry on, especially when there were so many awful things that had happened to her along the way, that would never leave her, because they were so awfully dramatic and damaging to her soul. Everyone she ever worked with had a great love for her, as she never acted like she was better than anyone else, but was grateful for the talent she had been given, for the opportunities and people who had gone to bat for her initially and was a loyal as they come. I could go on and on... I have read 4 books about her... I have almost all her movies that are to be had... She really stands alone with her style of acting and in the opinion of so many of her contemporaries, and some today, say she was the greatest actress in motion picture history... Her eyes, the way she could make the smallest movement and it would RING with exactly the right bell... There really is no one like her... She gave her all till the end!

Probably the most underrated actress Hollywood ever had. She was so honest in her performances and her work holds up far better than a lot of her contemporaries because of it

She's not underrated by real film lovers and as the years go by more people see her as one of the greats of all times. Joan was more beautiful, Bette more charismatic - but Barbara was the most gifted.

If you haven't seen her old movies from the early thirties on up, you have really missed something. Barbara Stanwyck by many accounts is the greatest actress in motion picture history. She makes acting look like real life - there is nothing phony or fake about her performances, she has so much of life experiences to draw on that most of use just don't have. She is not just a great actress, but she is a great human being, a great woman, a great role model for anyone. She had an incredibly horrific childhood and she took that hard life and made herself into some kind of a woman - She didn't want to be a star, she didn't care to be in the spot light, she loved what she made her living doing, acting, and gave her absolute all in anything and everything she did in that regard. I am in constant awe of her and her determination and willingness to learn as she lived her life!

This is a wonderful interview, I do hope that we get to hear the rest of it eventually.
I guess that I must be one of Barbara's oldest fans. I was 9 years old when I saw her in My Reputation in 1946. Since then I have seen and own 87 of her 88 films. I doubt if anyone alive has seen her only silent, Broadway Nights, which has probably disintegrated by now. I met Barbara at her Lincoln Centre tribute in 1981, and she graciously suggested that we had our photo taken together. When you see the history of great actress' like Barbara Stanwyck compared to the ones of today it makes me long for the time when talent carried the day.

Thanks for posting this! In response to your questions, my mother introduced me to old movies when I was eleven, as soon as VHS tapes became affordable in the late 80's. I've watched 43 of Ms. Stanwyck's movies this year on my way through her entire filmography. In "real life," I'm a community college English instructor.

I have seen 53 of her films and quite a few of her television shows. I have also read four biographies. I was struck by her when someone added me to a fan page on Facebook. I decided to read about her life since I was already a fan of 1940s Hollywood for over 25 years. Oddly enough , I knew precious little about this incredible beauty until last year. Since then, I have been Stanycentric. I admire her as an artist and also believe her to be a fabulous role model with her strength, tenacity and honesty.

I am a huge fan of this woman, on many levels. She is a woman who went through a lot from childhood on, and her great spirit carried her through it all! I have almost all of her movies, and many of her television appearances, as well as a DVD that has many radio programs she participated in like Lux Theater, etc. I have read 4 books about her, including the Victoria Wilson one that goes to 1940. Love her movies, and I consider her the greatest actress in motion picture history, and I'm not the only one that looks at her that way, Eddie Mueller on Turner Class Movies said as much about her. I am fascinated by what it must have taken for her to get through her childhood, and how she handled the totality of her life. She is amazing!!!!!

Even at age 4 when my newspaper typewriting mom left me in front of the TV I knew that the woman I was seeing on Big Valley was the matriarch of the family and not just a wife to a patriarch. Somehow this image stayed with me and was instrumental in how I saw women. I always had a physical attraction to Barbara Stanwyck and when I saw a clip of her much younger self from her film Ladies of Leisure (1930) on the news when she died in 1990, I was immediately taken by her again. I was 24 then. A good ten years later I saw Ladies of Leisure on TCM, and like it was yesterday that scene appeared again where Kay was posing for Jerry in his penthouse apartment studio. Between that goofy Brooklyn accent, her unique nose and teeth, and that snarl, I was hooked! Of course Ruby Stevens came out often and that's always the best part to anticipate:) I look forward to seeing and hearing everything she's done and I've seen and heard a lot already. Ladies of Leisure is my favorite film even though I like about everything she's done. I'd like to see The Man with a Cloak again, but can't seem to find it online anywhere.
I am a musician ( guitar 20 yrs.then organ for past 18). I especially like music and film of 1927-1937. Come from a big family and have a 19 year old son. I think they think I'm nuts. lol Aren't we all?

for those of you who have a deep interest in Barbara Stanwyck you should read Victoria Wilson's bio. It is pretty long and just the first volume which goes up to 1940. There is a lot of hollywood history as well.

I've watched all of her films (and nearly all her TV work - everything I can get my hands on) and she is my favorite actress of all time. No one can compare! I love her more than anyone or anything and I'm interested in literally everything about her. She defined great acting for me. She was so natural, honest and human. There is, never was, and never will be anyone like her.
