  • In this clip, Barbara Stanwyck guest stars on The Jack Benny Program. Stanwyck and Benny perform a very funny parody of the film Gaslight, which they have named "Autolight." Missy is adorable in it, showing her aptitude for comedy. I've had this for a few years and decided to upload it in celebration of all the attention Missy is getting lately thanks to Victoria Wilson's new biography of the first 33 years of her life. My gift to Stanwyck fans everywhere. I hope you enjoy it.
    Please excuse the small interruption in the video, it came to me already flawed.

    I want to add my thanks for the great posting Jack Benny is hilarious in his take off on the Charles Boyer character and Stanwyck could play comedy when she wanted to I did not realize they did a second version - the Museum of Broadcasting has the original with Ray Noble as the inspector and Rochester was not the butler That original caused Benny no end of trouble since MGM claimed although a parody it was a "remake"...This version has the advantage of your being able to see what is going on The original version seems to have faded

    Jack usually riffed around the script, but he was on his best behavior with an actress of Stanwyck's stature. OTOH he or the writers parcel out the laugh lines less equitably than usual. But it is good to be reminded that Jack could stick to a character, as he had done so superbly in 'To Be or Not to Be' opposite another formidable lady, Carole Lombard. Indeed his parody of Charles Boyer is not unlike Joseph Tura.

    It was filmed in June 1953, but initially kept off TV because of an injunction filed by MGM against Jack for filming his parody of "Gaslight" without their permission. The Supreme Court finally ruled in favor of MGM in 1958- but they allowed Jack to present the episode only once {with a token fee of $1000} on January 11, 1959.

      This episode was not included in future syndication "packages" for legal reasons. Jack originally did this sketch- a parody of "Gaslight"- on radio with Ingrid Bergman in 1945, and initially performed it on live TV with Barbara in 1952. During the 1953-'54 season, he wanted to do a filmed version (again, with Stanwyck)- and staged it before a live audience on the "Desilu" soundstage at General Service Studios [through George Burns' "McCadden Productions", who produced his 1953-'55 filmed episodes]. However, before it could be scheduled, MGM slapped a lawsuit on Benny, claiming he didn't have the right to film his parody because it was too close to the real "Gaslight" movie. The case dragged on for years, going all the way to the Supreme Court.....and Jack lost. Yet, MGM allowed Jack to present this episode ONLY ONCE {on January 11, 1959}, and he paid them $1000 for the rights to film it.

      Barry I. Grauman thanks for the updated info. i knew about the radio version with ingrid but did not know this was a second taping of the tv version. his ability to act straight when doing parody (think the honeymooners takeoff with audrey meadows) puts shows like SNL to shame.

      This was originally produced in the 1953-'54 season (an earlier live version with Barbara was telecast on January 7, 1952). However, MGM filed an injunction against telecasting this filmed episode at the time, because they claimed the sketch was too close to the original "Gaslight", and that it was a "remake". The lawsuit went on for almost five years- and the case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of Metro. Then, MGM allowed Jack to present the episode [for a token fee of $1000], and it was shown ONLY ONCE [on January 11, 1959].

      @hmmmmmmmmm2 6 років тому +1

      And interestingly, the Epilogue which has the line "you have one of the finest radio programs on the air today" would have been anachronistic in 1959 as it had been off the air for years in first run (and even for many months in its "Best of Benny" rerun incarnation) by the airing of this. Also, because of the delay in airing (while she does not appear), the mention of Mary Livingstone would have been quite unusual as she had retired almost a year prior and was no longer referenced.

    Barbara and ex husband Robert Taylor were good friends with the Benny’s. I didn’t particularly care for Barbara’s parody portrayal of the character. Barbara had a tendency to yell yell rush rush through a scene that calls for subtly. Subtle can be funny too. It would have been hilarious if Barbara would have shown the audience that her character was slowly being driven crazy. She acted hysterical , hysterical isn’t funny . I caught on what the story was about parodying Gaslight when Jack Benny walked in looking like Charles Boyer. (I missed Dons Wilson’s introduction) Barbara’s shown can be funny the lady Eve, for example. Yes, it’s television a half hour show but that’s no excuse. I adore BS, but she definitely was off her game and the overacting. It was like watching rehearsals for a school play. Quite disappointing. My only criticism of BS acting ever. It was a treat watching BS and JB together on screen!!

    • @fromthesidelines
      @fromthesidelines 2 місяці тому

      Barbara was deliberately overplaying her reactions. It wouldn't have been out of character if she'd said-
      "And do you know WHY I'm upset with you?"
      "No.....why?"
      "Because you still owe me $3000 from the *last* time I did your show!"
      "I TOLD you, we'll discuss that later!!!!"
      "WHEN? *1965????????????"*
      **slight pause, while Jack tries not to laugh**
      "I was thinking, about 1961."
