Her performance in the Thorn Birds - that last scene at her birthday party with Richard Chamberlain - remains the most incredible bit of acting I've ever seen. Bar none. I really don't see why being tough and being nice should be mutually exclusive. A lot of the "tough" women were just described as bitchy for asking for the same stuff me got to take for granted. I doubt all men were pleasures to work with but they didn't really get called "difficult" much, did they?

Barbara is my all time favorite actress and in my view, the greatest actress of her era. Her acting style was so natural and so authentic, her movies have aged better than many other movie stars of that time.
She was a great actress. From Double Indemnity to Big Valley, I could never take my eyes off her. She had from the minute she walked on the screen. Simply loved the woman, a true great.
In my opinion. She was one of those women that looked better with age. Unlike 99% of Hollywood, she aged gracefully. And maybe her personality had a little something to do with that.
You are absolutely right about that.I met her in the sixties. When she was doing thing at all, these are friend of mine was doing an episode, and she never looked prettier than with that gray hair
One of the most diverse actresses that ever performed. She was outstanding. I never saw her in a role or film in my 68 years that I didn't like. She is the only actress or actor I can say that about.
Agreed! Even as I child, I felt a connection with the strong characters she portrayed and as I grew up, I admired her even more as an actress and as a person.
I was a child when I saw her in ‘The Thornbirds’ and I was amazed at how she could play an elderly woman in love with a young man and carry the lead so perfectly. I think I watched that at least ten times! Then TCM came along and watched all her movies.
I'm glad this documentary included that tremendous scene from the "Thornbirds". She not only stopped everyone on the set, but also she stopped the series for the viewer. Wow! It was " children, this is how you do it". A roar from Hollywood's golden age in the ' 70's
Barbara Stanwyck dazzled me when I was a kid and saw "Ball of Fire" on my black and white television. Had never heard of the film and honestly didn't even recognize her at first, but her entrance into the professors' home and toying with them was truly brilliant acting.
@@joshuaortiz4886 I saw the live telecast in 1982. William Holden had died just the year before. They ran a few clips of Barbara's performances, including one of "Golden Boy" with Holden from 1939. At the end, she walked onstage, receiving a lengthy standing ovation before she began her speech. When she said of him, "He always wished that I would get an Oscar. And so, tonight, my Golden Boy, you got your wish," I broke down.
After my mother graduated from Boston's Children's Hospital School of Nursing in 1951 , she accepted a position at the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. One day a small woman wearing dark glasses came to her supervisor station loaded with toys, games, books and puzzles for the little kids on the wards, and asked for help getting the rest out of her car. It was Barbara Stanwyck with no press, no posse, and driving herself. She spent the entire afternoon playing and reading with the children, before leaving just as unobtrusively as she had come. My mother only stayed there about six months before she returned to New England, but in that time she said Miss Stanwyck did the same thing several times. After that as far as she was concerned, Barbara Stanwyck could do no wrong and became her favorite actress.
In an odd coincidence, when my mother was in high school, her father accepted a position in Phoenix Arizona. World War II was on , and my mother's after school job was working at a Dairy Bar at Sky Harbor Airfield, where a lot of young Pilots were trained. After she finished her shift and was walking across the tarmac, she said a handsome lieutenant came up to her and asked for directions. As she was going that way, and as she later told me, he was drop dead gorgeous oh, she offered to show him the way. She said he was very polite and they had a lovely conversation, but it wasn't until he said goodbye and they parted company , that she realized she had been walking with Lieutenant Robert Taylor.

Barbara Stanwyck is really the greatest actress in motion picture history! She could play any part. Her versatility and her love for what she did are evident in everything she ever did. She is the most amazing woman, who rose above all the odds and lived her life, doing what she loved and wanted to do and giving her best all the way!
Wow, the quality of the actors speaking about her says everything about her class. She was always so professional. Such an amazing actress. So respected.
I always loved Barbara. Even later in life, she was still gorgeous and talented. On The Big Valley you could tell that she and Richard Long were the movie stars where the rest were TV actors. Watch the reruns and watch how she sweeps in to the scenes and carries herself. Not to mention that she hurt herself more than once doing her own stunts. Even when she made one of her last public appearances on an awards show and two people had to hold her up, she was beautiful, and full of grace and class! Babs, you are missed! Love you pretty lady! You never had anything to prove to anybody!
At the AFI Awards, she had just emerged from the hospital after fracturing three vertebra while exercising. She had to be in unbelievable pain, yet she soldiered on. A metaphor for her life and career.

Does anyone remember Barbara stanwyck and Fred MacMurray in a movie about his being a district attorney and she is a petty thief. The story revolves around the fact that she has to be in carcerated during Christmas season. McMurray eventually takes her home for Christmas with him. The rest of the movie is her coming to realization that she is missing out on life due to her current self-made circumstances. She sees the goodness in those around her without being under conditional love. She let's herself be taken up in this small part of life that is real, pure and forgiving. She finds herself wanting that for her life. You can see in her acting that she has actually repented about her past behaviour and does her best to prove and live up to her new "set of standards " she has promised herself . Like the prodigal daughter if you will. At the end she finds love and accepts responsibility for her previous unlawful actions and vows to correct them. Knowing she could very well be losing the treasure she has recently found in the most unlikely place. This movie would have been a bust without her talent and dedication to the character she created. An amazing lady.
My favorite actress by far! She was just so real in her portrayals and versatile! There truly has never been or will ever be another actress like her!!!
Barbara gives a wonderful performance in "Double Indemnity", the look she gives whilst Walter Neff is doing the dasterdly deed is quite amazing, the whole scene is totally dependant on that expressive close-up. Long may her body of work be shown for film fans to fully appreciate her great talent.
+Jeff Eastwood. Barbara's performance in this film is so good as it is completely reliant upon her to build the tension throughout. The ending is quite disturbing and she shows once again what an accomplished actress she was. Regards.
orchard: Oh I so agree. The first time I saw it I was horrified because that's the way dangerous psychotics look; emotionless, eyes staring at nothing.
This is absolutely amazing. I have loved her for many decades. There are no words in the English language that can truly do her justice. Simply, I love you Miss Barbara Stanwyck.
At 71, I have been captivated by Barbara for many years. Never disappointed, she was the character with style, grace, charm and, of course, beauty. I still search the net hoping to find yet, one more of her movies.
She was the best! i love watching her act! She never ask for pity and gave all she got! A terrific actress who is still giving pleasure and joy 30 years after her death. She didn't need to be Davis or Crawford. She was Stanwyck and that says a lot! You go girl!!!
the more i watch her movies the more i become fascinated with her and its hard to pin down whether its her unique voice, sparkling eyes, or ability to play a cold hearted killer, seductive sassy girl, or a loving mother
What an actress and a what a life story. And that amazingly thin body frame of hers never altered, even in her later years. I continue to collect her work on DVD because her real life speaks through so many of her characters. As was the case for so many of those Golden Era actors.
Great tribute because it clearly depicted Miss Stanwyck for her unique qualities. Her immersion into character is undeniable. One complaint is that her light-hearted roles were not much discussed. Miss Stanwyck approached comedy with the same intensity of portraying a human being. Her flair gives us humor because it is real--we are insecure and do ridiculous things hoping life will turn out for the best.
I've always been a huge fan of Barbara Stanwyck, so that I had no idea that she wasn't up there with all the other icons of Hollywood. She will always be one of my all time favorites.
I think Barbara Stanwyck looks better in The Big Valley and she did when she was a younger actress what year did she die and how old is she I love the clothes she wears on The Big Valley the way she wears her hair she's a very elegant woman
Barbara Stanwyck was my favorite as well. My parents watched a lot of classic films when I was growing up and no other actress held my attention the way she did. I mimicked the way she walked and stood when I was figuring out who I was because I thought it just exuded strength.
The first Stanwyck movie I ever saw was "Annie Oakley." I loved it. The second one was "Stella Dallas." I was a teenager then, and was happy that I had watched it alone because I cried like a baby at the last scene. Boys don't like to cry, but I do every time I see it. RIP.
@@marijooneill8015 I can't even remember a time when I cried so much. Well, maybe when I was a kid and watched Walt Disney's "Old Yeller," when the boy had to put down his beloved dog. I didn't think I could feel so bad watching a movie.
Barbara is a legend. She was better than Davis, Crawford, Hepburn and other legends. Unlike of them, she never gave a bad perfomance or made a bad movie..
Bla bla bla...don't say nonsense things!...she was not better!...she was AS GREAT AS....when you love cinéma,you don't chose between talent, you praise it...
One of the few actresses at the time to not be apart of the studio system and be a free agent. It takes guts, talent, and confidence in one self to take a bold stance like that!
So glad I watched this. I had never been a huge fan of hers, but after watching this and what a generous, kind hard working woman she was I have a new appreciation for her!
I raced home every day from school just to watch reruns of the big valley! And then I discovered Stella Dallas and have been hooked on Barbara Stanwyck ever since!!
She may not have the legend of a Davis or Crawford, but she was more versatile and natural than either of them and unlike them, she excelled at comedy.
When I was a young teen, I read in a hairstyle magazine that she refused to dye her hair and wanted to wear her silver hair proudly. I decided that I was going to do the same thing and I am!
Miss Stanwyck was a great favorite of mine. Her acting range was huge and she was never typecast. It wasn't one of her best known roles but I loved her in "Ball of Fire"(1941) with Gary Cooper.
My favorite actress, although I didn’t appreciate her since I’ve gotten older and have watched more of her movies! She had a depth inside that came out, not like the beautiful actresses that used vanity , she was real and it came out in a way I haven’t seen in any other actress. Such a sad life, but she was a survivor.
A great actress. And she was a really adorable child. What a rough childhood she had-not surprised that she also worked so well with Marilyn Monroe on Clash by Night. Both had experienced difficult childhoods.
A fabulous human being, as well as actress! This quote was said about another actress :- “Marilyn played the best game with the worst hand of anybody I know.” ~Edward Wagenknecht, author....I feel this can definitely be said of Barbara Stanwyck as well. No wonder she was kind & thoughtful towards Marilyn, when they were in a movie together...Barbara sensed the similarities between them. A fine life, well lived :)
In my view, Barbara Stanwyck was miscast in that role. She wasn't believable in the cheap blonde wig. Fred MacMurray and Edward G. Robinson carried the movie.
Saw it on the Late Show when I was 8 years old, and my poor little heart broke : Stella Dallas, in the rain, being told by the cop to move it along as she's watching her daughter ... love her over all the others, even more than Ginger Rogers.
That scene in Stella Dallas was amazing. She didn't say a word. Yet she said everything. Now to convey her feelings without saying a word is acting at it's best.
Everytime I see Stella Dallas, I cry at the end. She was fabulous in Double Indemnity. Loved her in Ball of Fire! A real talent, a great star, but if her real last name was "Stevens," I'm Elvis reincarnated.
Barbara Stanwyck was one of the best and greatest movie stars and actors that came out of early Hollywood. Yes she was just as good as Katharine, Bette Davis or Joan Crawford. Maybe Barbra was better than those gals because she was so natural and real.
A Robert Anderson. She acted the pants off of Crawford. Crawford in my opinion wasnt a great actress, maybe a good one but definitely not in the caliber of Stanwyck.
Barbara should have signed with MGM, or Paramount ! maybe she would have gotten an oscar sooner, she signed with others, I saw the locked door, it was good ! Mexicalli rose I didn't see anything wrong with that movie either ,

She made it look SO easy. The consummate professional working actress. She sat the bar very high. She may not have had the ego of Crawford or Davis but she possessed the talent.

Have you seen "Sorry, Wrong Number"? My favorite Stanwyck performance.

Yes!
This is absolutely amazing. I have loved her for many decades. There are no words in the English language that can truly do her justice. Simply, I love you Miss Barbara Stanwyck.
A lady and a true actor. Thank you so much.
I loved her before.... after seeing this great biography, I love her even more. So many brilliant performances.
I adore Barbara Stanwyck. Amazing at her craft!
At 71, I have been captivated by Barbara for many years. Never disappointed, she was the character with style, grace, charm and, of course, beauty. I still search the net hoping to find yet, one more of her movies.
The strange loves of Martha Ivers is one .
the most exciting actress of that time - and beautiful to the end of her life.
Greatest star and actress ever. She knew how to act, how to be great in every scene. Great, great lady.
She was and is a Star. Knowing of her real experiences validates her true talents and I identify with many of her traits.
She was the best! i love watching her act! She never ask for pity and gave all she got! A terrific actress who is still giving pleasure and joy 30 years after her death. She didn't need to be Davis or Crawford. She was Stanwyck and that says a lot! You go girl!!!
She chose not to be a victim
They didn’t mention one of my favorite Movies she starred in and that was Christmas in Connecticut! I watch that movie all the time!
(: She also did an old "Titanic" ... I have the video ... I only bought it because of her!!!!! ... 😚
I also just loved Christmas in Connecticut. Funny Movie ! Vickie
8 years
omg, my ultimate favorite!
Along with Cary Grant!
She guided her own ship; never selling her soul to the studios of her time. The studios came to her!
She was outstanding in Sorry Wrong Number along with Burt Lancaster.
mickeyh1961 .
I love that movie. Especially the ending!
I need to watch this movie. I love both of them.
the more i watch her movies the more i become fascinated with her and its hard to pin down whether its her unique voice, sparkling eyes, or ability to play a cold hearted killer, seductive sassy girl, or a loving mother

The thorn birds was outstanding. I remember seeing it as a child and recently rewatched it. Barbara just elevated that miniseries.
(: I saw that too!!!!! ... 😚
(: There is nothing like that today!!!!! ... :(
I love this woman ... she can do no wrong in my eyes. Even a lousy film is great because she's in it, always doing her best.
I agree.
What an actress and a what a life story. And that amazingly thin body frame of hers never altered, even in her later years. I continue to collect her work on DVD because her real life speaks through so many of her characters. As was the case for so many of those Golden Era actors.

TheRetroWoman80 you are awesome
What an excellent comment!

RIP.
Stella Dallas was one of my favorites and you are right the last scene with her daughter getting married was a tear jerker.
@@marijooneill8015
I can't even remember a time when I cried so much. Well, maybe when I was a kid and watched Walt Disney's "Old Yeller," when the boy had to put down his beloved dog. I didn't think I could feel so bad watching a movie.
Many have said she was always professional...never late and treated the stage hands with as much respect as her co-stars..great lady.
She was a brilliant actress!! Always admired her.
@@christophepena2212fun watching them yet never model your life after bed hopping women their lives prove it isn't worth your integrity
She was amazing. Loved her old movies and The Big Valley.
one of the greatest actresses of all time. Totally awesome!
I think she was better than Crawford. Remember Big Valley? Crawford was never big on TV.
I've often thought Joan should have been in Sorry, Wrong Number and Barbara in Mildred Pierce.
Jeff Eastwood I can't imagine anyone but Barbara in Sorry Wrong Number. She owned that part.
Oh she was absolutely amazing in it and deserved her Oscar nomination for it, I just think Joan also would have been amazing in that role.
I always knew it as Davis, Crawford, and Stanwyck when thinking of the 30's famous actresses. Funny, even after the hype these 3 were the best.
Last night, I stayed up late to watch "California." Something made me look her up, this Sunday morning...OMG, What a lady, what a human being...
She also did a movie with Elvis Presley called “Roustabout” Elvis was ecstatic to be working with her.
An incredible actress and an astonishingly beatiful woman.
When I was a young teen, I read in a hairstyle magazine that she refused to dye her hair and wanted to wear her silver hair proudly. I decided that I was going to do the same thing and I am!

(: Nothing wrong with that!!!!! ... ☺
(: She was ... yet people say "She was not beautiful" ... :(
But she really was!!!!! ... ☺
Real beauty is the charm, truth, empathy, wit and intelligence that exudes from her.
This is the best documentary of an actress. Thanks.
Great respect for Barbara Stanwick.
Miss Stanwyck was a great favorite of mine. Her acting range was huge and she was never typecast. It wasn't one of her best known roles but I loved her in "Ball of Fire"(1941) with Gary Cooper.
My love for Barbara is unbounded. Wonderful actor.
What a brilliant appreciation of one of my very favourites. There is no one to touch Ms. Stanwyck. I adore her. This brought tears to my eyes.
(: I like Robert Stack too!!!!! ... ☺
The "Lady Eve" was a terrific movie, she was great as both people In this movie, the best.
Stanwyck was simply the best.
Every single performance was amazing.
Riveting.
Double Indemnity - one the truly great thrillers.
Double Indemnity- the daddy of them all, greatest film noir of all time.
@@ThePlataf I'd have to add "Sorry, Wrong Number"
@@robyngranberry9044 Yes, that was brilliant.
Maybe the all-time best film-noir.
Robert Anderson I realized that Barbara Stanwick was great actress and so elegant classy when I was a child, I love Barbara.
Mexicalli rose I didn't see anything wrong with that movie either ,
@@haroldmachroli3368 Crawford is known for her discipline and professional and hard-working manners, not versatility
Robert Anderson a former
When she looked into her leading man's eyes and told him how great he was and how much she adored him...well, I so wanted to be "that guy".
she prefer ladies eyes
love it !!! Barbara 70 plus says "I'm still me' So true...
she was a fabulous and beautiful movie star
In my opinion she was a great actress, not beautiful. ...
@@anapaulasilva5660
(: She really was beautiful ... ☺
In her time, an actress had to be beautiful!!!!! Hollywood is not always fair!!!!! ... :( It is not a dream world!!!!!
You must not have seen enough of her movies!!!!! She was a true woman!!!!! ... ☺
(: Exceptional I should say!!!!! ... ☺
I admire her work even more now than before. Thanks for uploading this.
Thank you! I enjoyed her character in Big Valley. And I love the oldie they just mentioned where she was like s hobo and she watched her daughter get married as she stood outside in the cold. Double Indemnity, yes!
"Stella Dallas". An amazing performance. She should have won an Oscar® for it.
Queen B h
She made it look SO easy. The consummate professional working actress. She sat the bar very high. She may not have had the ego of Crawford or Davis but she possessed the talent.
Christina McKenna I think she was more talented than they were really. She was more genuine. They were flashier and so they got more attention.
