Very happy to have seen this band live, when I was young. ..... "hymn", "Child of the universe", "rock and roll lady"...; great pieces of music.

Thanks for that memory. I must listen to my BJH collection again. They were a great group in concert. The last time I saw them was on the "Octoberon" tour.

Hi Shufflers. Dave from London. Really enjoying your Prog Song Sundays. I was a big fan of Barclay James Harvest back in the early 70s. Mockingbird is a beautiful track, but I have always felt that the studio version is over orchestrated. Try their 1974 live album, which includes most of their best songs (including Mockingbird), gives them a bit more oomph, and replaces the orchestra with the good old mellotron. Saw them live around that time, and they were fantastic.

BJH were dubbed the 'Poor Man's Moody Blues' at the time because of their similar sound. They didn't object to this and even released a track named after this monicker! As others have commented, the live versions are better than the original studio recording. They are worth a wider listen.

The orchestral section was arranged by Robert John Godfrey - of The Enid (another band worth checking out.)
Also, what is the version of Yes' Topographic Oceans' behind you?

If you like softer prog, BJH are well worth exploring.Over the last few years their older albums have been reissued in expanded form, with Once Again being the most recent, currently sitting in my unplayed pile, although I am familiar with it having has it on both vinyl and CD for many years. Mocking Bird is one of their best known tracks although there are plenty of other good ones - Hymn, Child of the Universe, Crazy City, Suicide?, Loving is Easy, Titles, Poor Man's Moody Bluesare a few of them

Barclay James Harvest was my favorite band while they were together, not so much with either versions that they split up into,

Was Routine the shuffle recorded just before this which prompted that comment?

The Moody Blues force is strong with this one. A comparison to Renaissance is also valid. I've never been able to get into BJH. Too "twee" for me, I guess.

@@gaiaeternal5131 Yes, it is, i spose I saw over 100 bands at the Free Trade Hall, had to get your tickets from Hime and Addisons, i spose the most famous was the Dark side of the Moon tour, but to be honest I never really rated Pink Floyd as a LIVE act so to speak..ELP put on a much better show I reckon

it's my favorite song by BJH, it has a melancholic and nostalgic side very accentuated for me, my feeling, it has a musical side to Ennio Morriconne it could have been a film score, this song is very beautiful but MUST LISTEN LIVE, it’s even better than this version

I am extremely jelous of anyone listening to BJH for the first time...One of the few and best bands who sound equally good Live... LIVE TAPES ( 1978 ) is my favourite all time as it has 10 of their best songs on it up until that era.. And in my opinion way better than their 1974 Live album, which is often credited as being their peak, and recently getting more much desreved attention. Somehow miraculously BJH was overlooked, by the British mainstream and the American public, and were often assumed-out of being known to no fault of their music. Many people would say " Oh yeah BJH, they are similar to the Moody Blues aren't they, are they still around !? " But never actually sat down and listed to them for some reason. All BJH require from music lovers is for them to be listened to. Thats it, simple! John Lees is still very active with his version of BJH, and Les Holroyd lives in Germany and still active with his version of BJH... Sadly both Mel Pritchard the drummer & Woolly Wolstenholm the Meletron genius, passed away in the 2000's... And the fouresome never managed to play togehter again... John often jokes about the reason they were less known by saying, " This chap walks into a record store, and goes ah give me the record by that band er, er Barclay Jessy, eh.. Baby eh,.. ah fuck it, just give me the Rolling Stones album! " ;-)))) Respect BJH Legends Live On! B.
