Fujifilm X10 - what makes it so special (in 2023)?

- Fujifilm X10 is a very special camera for me. This is the camera that started my love for Fujifilm cameras. The Fuji X10 is small and incredibly well built. The lens is bright and super high quality. Although the Fuji X10 is not perfect in every way and has a rather small sensor the camera is magical. For some reason what would be traditionally considered shortcomings or problems become properties that only add to the character of Fuji X10. This Fuji is a photographers' camera. It is for those who want the old school experience and enjoy the process of photography as much (or even more) as the results. The controls on Fuji X10 camera are as good as you'd find in pro cameras. And the camera comes in a full leather case. You cannot go wrong with Fujifilm X10. In this video I talk about what makes the Fuji X10 stand out from the pack. I'm showing sample images of Fujifilm X10 as well that I took during a hike on a very nice spring day.

Still using mine. Fuji dropped the ball here,. They should return to this model design, with larger sensor. One of my best photojournalism cameras.
Hi thelabradax! I really agree with you on this one. It would be so great to have a next generation of this camera. Kind regards!
Fujifilm x pro 2/3 it's same design
its hard to slot this into the mixes of X100 and other range finder interchangeables models. But if they’ll upgrade with a 1inch+ sensor and modern focusing tech, and keep a comparable zoom lens spec (probably slightly bigger due to bigger sensor), I’ll buy in a heartbeat.
So happy to see this in 2023. I reluctantly traded in my Canon SLR for this model when it came out as I needed money to get through my art degree. It’s always been reliable and a joy to use, and even more now I have a family of my own to document. It means so much to me. Thank you for your video.
Hi! Thanks so much for sharing. This camera is, indeed, a keeper. Kind regards!
Thanks Tom,very encouraging ,just sold my XT20, yesterday.this coming Saturday will buy this camera.
Hi! Thank you very much for watching. I think the X-T20 has a better image quality if you look at it at the pixel level. However, the X10 has more character, is more fun to use and its photos are probably more interesting to look at. I'm a fan of the X10. Best of luck to you!
Great video, shots & commentary. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Trev Mac! Thanks you very much for watching. Kind regards!
Great video for a great camera! I have an X20 since its launch, and taking photos with this camera is a real pleassure, is like to come back to the analog era! Thanks a lot!
Hi Marcelo! Thank you very much for watching. The X20 is another great camera, very similar to X10. Kind regards!
What a beautiful homage to this little camera. I remember using it a lot (bought it used myself many years ago) but not recently. Sorta lost to the utilitarian smartphone and its bokkeh/easy sharing promises. This video inspired to me do to a trip to nature and take a lot of nice, brilliant pictures. Thanks!
Hi Charly! Thank you so much for watching. I'm glad to read that you got inspired. Best of luck to you with your photography!
This was my first Fuji. Still regret selling it now. Missed it and the feeling it gave me. As I discovered it quite early into my photography journey I massively under appreciated it.
Hi Jo! Thanks a lot for your feedback. Indeed, this camera introduced many people to the Fuji system. Kind regards!
I have this camera since 2012 and love it. I also have a Sony dslr, but a trip with the x10 is a joy. My companion.
Hi Jan te Pas! I hear you! This is exactly where the X10 shines - on long trips. Enjoy your X10, it's lots of fun.
I just get this camera, so so good, loved it!
Hi! Thank you for sharing. This is a nice camera, indeed. Best of luck to you with your new camera!
Just pick up an x10 and hold it in your hands and you will immediately understand why this is a cherished camera. Small yet SOLID. This is no toy. This is old world quality.
Hi Linjica! This is very true and very well said, too. Best of luck to you with your new camera!
Still have mine purchased when they came out and still the best of all my cams since then.
Hi! Thanks so much for your feedback. I fully agree that this camera is very special. Not just a single aspect, but the overall package is so nice. Kind regards!
This is a nice video. Similarly to que XQ2, it also got offered more that I paid a couple of years ago; so I sold it. I now migght give the X10 a try.
Hi Bruno!Tech! Thank you. Yes, the X10 is a unique one. Kind regards!
This video was like poetry. Thanks!
Hi Viktor! Thank you so much, this matters very much to me. Kind regards!
I have the X10 and after searching for a filter I found the following from Amazon uk is perfect. It fits beautifully and allows the lens cap to slide on as well. Very pleased.
Fotasy 40mm MRC Multi-Resistant Nano Coating Super Slim MC HD UV Filter
Hi Kate! Thank you very much for sharing this valuable information. Kind regards!
Wonderful!
Hi Jacques! Thank you so much Kind regards!
Nice job! Thank you
Hi Craig! Thank you very much for watching. Kind regards!
Found one second hand many years ago. Still one of my favorite camera's to use!
While the lenshood/52mm UV filter combo that came with it works okay, I found an old Petri 40.5 mm Skylight filter not to long ago. Fits like a glove, and being of a very flat design, it adds almost nothing to the front of the lens.
Hi Eric! Thank you very much for sharing this info. Kind regards!
I love my X10 and still enjoy taking it out for a hike. I wish Fuji would create a modern 1" sensor version keeping the EXR tech. I'm sure with modern processors, EXR would be really powerful.
Hi Steve! Yes, I've heard other people mention these things, too. I think that would be really nice. I like the philosophy behind these cameras a lot. Kind regards!
I was able to repair an old X10 Camera that had a Focus Error, which I paid EUR90. Was able to Tear Down the camera, remove and clean the Lends Unit. Now it works perfectly and is in great condition. A great buy for EUR90. Complements my X30 and X100T. Smaller than both the others, so easy to take everywhere in 2023. Love Fuji cameras.
Hi A-dam Photo Fanatic! This sounds like an excellent deal and a very smart buy. I love your UA-cam user name - very clever word play. Kind regards!
I couldn't agree more with your thoughts. I have the X10 and the first model of the X100. Both are no match to any today's camera in terms of number of pixel and/or the huge latitude which the zillions of settings found nowadays can give you.
But that's exactly the point. What comes out of these cameras is far from perfect at today's standard, yet is very good. You look at pictures taken with these camera and there's a feeling, a unique characteristic. One of the two always travels with me or is sitting in the car. Just in case.
Hi Ferdinando! Thank you very much for your feedback. I absolutely agree with you. You put it very nicely, too. Kind regards!
Hi Tom excellent video! Just wondering if you could you make a video on how to use the camera's shooting functions? Especially the Manual mode or AF-M? Thanks 🙏😁
Hi Jo! Thanks. This is a great idea; I'll put it on my list. Kind regards!
I still have an X10.
I use a Ricoh GR digital now as it fits in my jeans pocket.
Hi Neil! Thank you for your feedback. Both and very nice cameras. Kind regards!
I bought my X10 cheap with dust on the sensor in order to clean, try out of interest and flip for a small profit. I didn't expect anything better than my smartphone, but I was so wrong. The process of using it, the wonderful images, the lens, and the portable size. Some people say the optical viewfinder is useless, I find it so nostalgic I love using it. Your videos really sum up how I feel about this camera in a really poetic way. Great job
Hi Fraser! Indeed, this camera is special. I appreciate your words very much. Kind regards!
How did you clean the sensor? My x10 has the same issues
@@Metrodragon Hi! I'd also be interested in the details. Cleaning the sensor of cameras with permanently attached lens is typically an elaborate process. You basically first need to take the camera apart using screwdrivers and other tools. Kind regards!
@@tom_photoexactly why I asked :) A local camera store offers sensor cleaning but I am pretty sure it is for cameras with changeable lenses. It's not the end of the world, keep it below f5 and remove the small speck's of dust with Lightroom, but I do want the camera restored in its full glory!
I actually done EXACTLY what you described - about hiking alone with the camera. It was such an amazing experience, it inspired my love for photography.
Such a great camera. It needs a remake.
Hi Zak! Thanks so much for watching. Yes, absolutely, this camera needs a remake. Kind regards!
I took mine out with me this morning for a walk down the river. I popped the memory card in my phone and took a look at the images. Yet again I was blown away by the quality. The bnw have a magic to them. I will never sell mine. I wonder if the x30 has the same magic l?
Hi! You are so right, this is a special camera. The photos are not spectacular when you look at each individual pixel. But the overall result is magical, I agree. Good idea never to sell this camera. The X30 is a bit different camera. It doesn't have the EXR options (at least not implemented the same way). So, for me X10 is truly unique, and it's not coming back. Kind regards!
Now THIS is a review!
Kudoooos
Hi Berry! Thank you, I appreciate it very much. Kind regards!
Just what we need on a really bad day. A fuji dream to continúe living! Thanks for the video
Hi NGore-de! Good to hear from you; thanks so much. Kind regards!
I sell all my equipe a few years ago, the only digital camera that still remains in my hands is this x10, i love all about this fuji cam, i realized that the only cameras that i need are this digital and one pocket analog Olympus stylus 35mm.
Hi! I agree, the X10 really is that nice. Best of luck to you!
is my baby for ever x10 awesome
Hi! What a nice way to put it. Thank you for watching and best of luck to you!
I'm receiving a X10 today, and really looking forward for it!
- But I'm a bit confused about the filter size, I saw someone wrote that 40.5mm would fit, but the correct size is 40mm?
Also, very nice video!
Hi Frederik! Thank you very much for watching. Indeed, there is confusion about the filter size of the X10. I have yet to find a filter that fits well. The correct size should be 40.5 mm but different manufacturers are said to fit differently. If you have more questions about your new X10 please don't hesitate to ask. I've made several videos on different aspects of Fujifilm X10 ( ua-cam.com/play/PLt4tR_x4_8PiJWkSjovEELKd3kDAHFtzh.html&si=_pbPvTF1S4cZ-TDM ) and more is coming. Best of luck to you with this wonderful camera!
Hi! I am starting photography. This or the x-t2? Can I ask for your opinion? Will mainly use it for simple photography and a bit of filming- will it work for that? Thankksss!
Hi runi! Thank you for asking. The X10 and X-T2 are so different that they are difficult to compare. The X10 has a fixed lens, you cannot take it off. This also means you don't have to worry about getting other lenses. As a beginner it's good f you don't have to worry about gear. The X-T2 is much more capable. It has a larger sensor and produces cleaner photos; it is much more advanced in the video department. On the other hand the X10 is tiny, built like a tank and so much fun to operate. It's got all the controls you'll ever want and it will teach you photography. It's photos will look retro style. The X10 is one of my favorite cameras of all time but it does not come close to X-T2 in terms of photo quality. As a beginner I personally would get the X10 but to most other people I'd recommend the X-T2. Sorry that I cannot give more clear answers. Best of luck to you!
After reset, my X10 gone with white screen yesterday. I tried to on/off but nothing happens then. Can't view photos or access menu. You guys have any advice before going repaired?
Hi! Thanks for asking. It sounds to me that some internal cable may have been dislocated. However, you could do some simple checks first:
Is your battery fully charged and making all proper connections? Do you have another battery you could test.
You may also try another memory card to see if this makes a difference.
I'd recommend to do a factory reset again. Since you cannot see the screen, reset is tricky. However, please try this:
1) Remove the battery and memory card
2) Let the camera sit like this for 15 min to drain the residual power
3) Insert freshly charged battery (but DO NOT insert a memory card)
4) Do a factory reset
5) Update your camera software.
Let me know if any of this worked. I'd like to help you to resolve this issue.
Kind regards!
I've heard so many good things about this camera, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere. So, I've been hesitating between picking up the Fujifilm X20 or the Olympus OMD EM10 mark II. Any recommandations?
Hi Flavie! Both cameras are very fine, indeed. I happen to be a Fuji fan and the X-T20 is one of the best Fuji models as far as I'm concerned. Fuji lenses are also amazing. So, I might be a bit biased when I say that I personally would choose the X-T20. Kind regards!
@@tom_photo Thank you for your kind response! However, from what I gather, the X-T20 is not the same as the X20. Would your answer be the same for the X20?
@@flaviecote-roy5463 Hi Flavie! Indeed the X20 and X-T20 are very different cameras. Sorry that I accidentally thought you were asking about the X-T20. Let me answer the same question now for the X20. When comparing it with the Olympus, it is clear that the Olympus has all the advantages. It is more advanced in terms of bells and whistles but most notably it has a larger sensor (so expect cleaner photos). Unless you are a fan of the X20 I would recommend you to get the Olympus. Enjoy your photography!
I have the X20 and absolutely love it. As mentioned in this video, all the quirks with X10 except a better viewfinder is there, but also the great experience and unique characters withe the output
I forget I can shoot Velvia and also lower the shadow contrast...well, the closest I can get to this would be to put my 23mm 2.0 on my X-M1.
Hi! Thanks for watching. Yes, I think my Fuji X-A1 will probably get the closest to X10 but they are still different. Cheers!
The camera was adorable with a stunningly attractive design. Unfortunately, just a few months after its arrival, people started to complain about the disc reflections on high-lighting zones. Fuji decided to turn a deaf ear to those voices. That was the dealbreaker for many Fuji enthusiasts. The sales have suffered a significant drop. In my opinion, a camera should first and foremost function as a practical tool, rather than being seen merely as a topic of conversation or a nostalgic symbol of the past.
Hi! Thank you very much for watching and making this point. Kind regards!
@@tom_photo Dear Tom, I didn't want to imply a negative comment on your great exposition, since I consider your channel as a benchmark on this site. I don't know if you are aware of that anomaly on this model.
I appreciate, as always, your kind answer to my intervention. You are a Gentleman.
Have a great day!
@@mannyquinn5841 Hi! Thank you. You had a great comment. This is a very important point and something I have to research further. It was nice to hear from you!
my uncle gave this to my dad, never knew it was good lol , wonder how itd fare against my 14 pro , this camera probably still better despite being bought in like 2017 or smth
Hi Allien! Yes, it is a great camera. It actually came out in 2012, so the camera is well over a decade old - but still going strong. Kind regards!
@@tom_photo right as i got this reply i got it out, batteries are dead lol guess i have to buy new ones
@@nayeonranghae Hi Allien! New batteries are definitely a worthwhile investment if this allows you to start using the X10. Best of luck to you!
How do you deal with the lack of a EVF? I’m looking for my first camera and was just checking this out. I commented on your X-E2 video too 😂
Hi LordAtomsk! This is a good question. Some people are used to taking photos without the EVF. A small number of people will find that the viewfinder that X10 has works well enough. However most people probably complain about the lack of EVF. I agree with you that it would be nice to have a better viewfinder. I personally do not use the viewfinder when I photograph with the X10. It's a limitation but it does not make the X10 a bad camera. Kind regards!
Look for an X20: same body as the X10 and same great lens, but with electronic overlay on the OVF showing focus area and key exposure data. If the X10 is perfect, the X20 is perfecter!
@@Spikesw15 Hi James! What a good way to put it - the X10 perfect, the X20 is perfecter. Thanks so much!
X20 diferent sensor and processor.. Better handling.. the magic that can x10 do at 6mp ia gone
I love mine. It’s not getting sold.
Hi Graham! Thank you for your feedback. Best of luck to you with your photography!
Trying to find an alternative to the super expensive Fujifilm x100v and wonder if you think this could be an alternative?
What I would love is a Camera that produce good looking pictures right from the get go as I really dont have the time or energy to edit photos.
Have a Canon m50 now and do like that one but with no good looking inbuilt presets it forces me to shoot raw and then edit every photo :S
Hi Lord_Acturus! Thank you for asking. Indeed, the X10 is a very special camera. But if you want more ideas and perhaps something more modern and with more film simulations I'd also recommend to take a look at Fuji X-T10 ( ua-cam.com/video/sHMhZ6HMZwk/v-deo.html ). Kind regards!
@@tom_photo Thank you so much for the fast reply and great video! Will check out the X-T10 :D
All the best!
@@roundlake96 Best of luck to you!
It's a nice camera, but, not so good. I can explain: it was my main camera, I had a 600d at the time also, but I was travelling always and I needed a camera for it. It's absolutely one of the best camera to use and it feels robust. BUT: I bought it like 10 years ago, second hand with bag for 230 euros, now I saw it online for 500!!! The quality of the files was good at the time, but also not so good, when I was printing A4-A3 pictures, the difference with the 600d was huge. The sensor is very small and Ihad too big problem: one time the screen stopped t work, so I had to send it to fuji and I paid 150 euros. Second time the on/off system on the lens also stopped to work and again I had to send it and to pay. I still have it, I use it sometimes for fun. Colours are great, really and for web use it's really a good camera, but again, if you have the M50, the size it's more or less the same, but the quality of the Canon is 20 times better (I'm using a M3)
@@leradicideglialberi Hi! Thank you for your feedback. Yes, the sensor is small and the image quality is not up there with the modern cameras. But the amount of character the photos have is quite unparalleled. It's a truly amazing camera. Kind regards!
I admit to purchasing this camera many many years ago ans just never took the time to get comfortable with it. Ive alternstively just forgotten about it, and considered selling it. Would anyone suggest its worth getting comfortable with? Or do i just go ahead and try selling it? :/
Hi Jade! Thanks for asking. I think this camera is truly special and the images it produces have a special character. I have several cameras and I immediately recognize the images I took with the X10. I consider this quite special. However, it all depends on your purpose. If you need to make very large high quality prints then the small sensor size of X10 becomes a limitation. If you need to make videos, the X10 is not a good choice. But the X10 is a perfect way to get into true photography because it has an amazing array of controls. Because of its small size and great quality lens with a good reach the X10 is a very nice travel camera. I'm not selling mine because the camera stands out from among the others. Kind regards!
If you want to sell it I'm looking for one for a gift, so let me know!
@@MrPepinho22 Hi Sergio! I recommend this camera for sure. You might be able to buy one on Ebay. Kind regards!
There is no camera that looks, feels and smells better than the X 10. Really!
Hi Kai! You are absolutely correct. Kind regards!
Never sell it. If and when you are truly done with it pass it on to a young and upcoming photographer in your family. You can’t put a price on that.
Hi vincentj! This in excellent advice. Kind regards!
But you also have XA1 why are you holding on to that one :)
just curious.
Hi! Thanks for asking. The X-A1 is a typical hybrid camera. The X10 is very different technology and it produces photos with a different feel. It makes sense for me to own an array of cameras and lenses in order to run a photography channel. I need to be able to run various kinds of tests to address and answer various questions. The X10 offers photography experience different from my other cameras. Happy photography!
@@tom_photo Good to know. Keep creating such content. I have a XA1 and X10 as well two different cameras but XA1 is a sleeper in my opinion.
@@Zainphotography Thanks! Best of luck to you with your photography!
Where would you find hardships in hiking in latvia lol
Hi Anton! Thank you for your message. Latvia is very nice for hiking. Not hard, just nice. Kind regards!
It comes with a leather case??
Hi Kent! Yes, it very often (but not always) comes with a very high quality full leather case. This is pretty special. Kind regards!
That sounds nice, when I got mine there was no case. Maybe something Fuji added later.
@@TheLostBijou Hi Kent! I did some more research on this. The most standard version shipped without the leather case but Fujifilm offered it as an accessory. Apparently enough people ordered the leather case because most units I have seen have been with the leather case. I have owned two units of the X10 over the years. I purchased both as used cameras and both had the leather case. Kind regards!
I'd love some of these older Fuji's but alll used cameras, especially Fuji's are skyrocketing in price.
Hi Jonathan! Thank you for your feedback. I've also made this observation. My X10 that I bought many years ago as a used camera has not lost its value during all that time. The problem with Fuji cameras is that for some reason they've always made them a bit less than there is demand for them. This makes the prices go up. People have discovered that the older model are not outdated but actually have advantage over newer models (size, price, fun factor, available lenses etc). Some of the new Fuji models are incredibly expensive (X-HS2) and they do not look or handle very much like the models from the past that people have grown to love. Kind regards!
It make photos in raw?
Hi Marco! Thank you for asking. Yes, the Fuji X10 can record Raw files. However they are a bit different and not all editors read them properly. Because of the unique sensor design some editors may recognize them as 6 MPix Raw files rather than 12 MPix. There are workarounds to make them function properly but it may take a bit of knowledge and work. I use my X10 for JPEG only as I have other cameras for Raw files. Kind regards!
I just sold my fujifilm x10 today.
Hi Bebe Ng! Yes, for every chapter there's a beginning and end. Thank you for watching and kind regards!
darn i am looking to buy one! i've wanted this camera 10 years ago and only can afford it now! hahaha

Does the x10 have a leaf shutter like the x100?
Hi! Thank you for asking. The X10 has a a combined mechanical and electronic shutter. It is not built like that of the X100 (which has a leaf type shutter). However, I'm not an expert on how precisely the X10 shutter mechanism is built. Kind regards!
