Hay Mads, your spring lines are running in the wrong direction. Fasten them to the boat mid ship and to the dock at the stern and bow. That way when the wind blows from the stern or bow they will lay the boat nicely along the dock and not work against your bow and/or stern line. Use the base of a station if you don't have a mid ship cleat.
Nice Vid. Love the little island tour. Cheers

Your travel story telling has been steadily getting better and better. You mentioned a while ago you were worried about the transition from DIY to travel vlogs. This was an amazing video, you’re really crushing the game. Keep up the fantastic work!

I have my boat in Sesimbra, near Lisbon. This weekend there were 5 or 6 sailboats that were attacked between 1 and 5 miles from shore. 3 of the boats lost their rudders and had to be towed. The ones that didn't have damages was because they defended themselves with firecrackers and/or they did the reverse motoring maneuver. Please keep that in mind as we would like to continue in your company.

Thanks for the info Vitor. I forgot that when we were kids we used to enjoy setting firecrackers off in the rock pools. It was the 1960s so pollution and safety weren't a thing, even smoking was supposed to make you irresistable to women.

I was curious about the transition from DIY to cruising. After digesting multiple post refit videos, I have to say it was seamless, maintained your high standards, and has held my interest. Although I do love DIY, I still hold your channel as one of the top ones out there. Ava is a real trooper, and has played a great part in enhancing said transition. Keep up the great work, and the best of luck to you and yours.

You two are so geeky and loveable. Total opposite my debauched self. Your boat is so spiffy perfect, it hurt to see it trashed on that dock. Been in that situation at times. Lost fenders, popped a few, broke lines, ripped off bolted line guides and destroyed several of those shock absorber thingys. Sucks to see your loved boat/home tortured like that. But you got to stay positive. As you are Mads. You'll have plenty of repair DYIs to keep you busy during your travels. Hope you'll stop by Cabo Verde where I've been for quite some time. A wonderful and unique archipelago country with amazing and very challenging sailing experiences. Cheers.

@@tkjokester A padded "blanket that goes between fenders and hull - stops fender rash and "smiley faces" when you're bouncing off a pontoon inn bad(windy) weather. You can buy them off the shelf or have them made by your canvas shop. You can never have enough fenders....

A 'Dive Hooka' or 'Snuba' set up will pay for itself in saved haulout fees in no time at all. Checking the prop and rudder as well as cleaning the hull is no longer such an onerous chore that you don't put it off till you have to pay loads of cash to get lifted at a marina... Also super for shallow diving, especially when that's where the most structure, light and fish can be found...

I had a problem with my anchor, with an 8 tonne 40ft launch . Tended to drag, very embarrassing having to start up the big Cummins motor in the middle of the night, in a crowded anchorage, especially before I fitted a muffler! Swapped it for a SARCA anchor like yours, with longer and heavier chain, never moved even in high winds, in all sorts of anchorages. So your experience is surprising.

Another great video. If you get into that sort of berthing situation again, try fixing the springs (1.5 x loa) from the bow to a point near the stern and vice versa crossing amidships. That'll hold you off as well as steady fore and aft.

Another superb video, love the style you guys have settled into. 2 small comments for your pondering...
When you anchor dragged the 20 times, did you haul it all the way back up every few attempts or keep trying with it down? I ask because if the anchor was as fouled as it was when you left from the start, it would not have held well at all
And it was raining, why did you run the water maker and not collect the lovely cloud squeezings? :)

I’ve docked in Bayona 4 times over the years. Always been great. I’m not much of a club snob, but the yacht club there is worth a little visit, as they’re located in an actual fortress… First time there, about 1998, we were at a buoy, the floating piers were not built yet. To get ashore, you could just blow the fog horn and the club sloop would pick you up, for free. White uniforms and two guys standing straight in attention. I felt quite ridiculous, but it’s also fun with the pomp and circumstance.

For some reason I really liked this episode. I’ve been following Sail Life for many years … has it really been that long? It was fascinating watching the full Athena refit process; I learned a lot (now I’m an expert 😜). As a retired Software Engineer, I recognized the “too much money for your own good” as you (Mads) fitted every electronic/digital gizmo under the sun. One lightning strike and you’re back in the stone age. Then as this morphed from a refit channel to a sailing channel, it became a little more interesting again. I was a little suspicious of Ava as she joined the crew. However, as a bit of a self-confessed history nerd, I’m really enjoying your (Ava) ability to research and summarize the historical background of the places you pass through. I’ve become an Ava fan. I also confess to being a 20,000 Leagues fan, so this episode was particularly engaging. Vigo is now on my bucket list. We have lots of Orcas here but so far they haven’t learned that ripping rudders off sailboats is a great deal of hilarious fun. I’ve seen them close up and can imagine the stress this adds to a passage. I look forward to following you for many years to come. Safe sailing and keep up the great videos. Cheers.

Thinking of your windy night, you can use a thinner long (as long as you can put out without people trip on it) that you tie on the middle of your moringrope, perpendicular to it. That will flex and work as an damper. The longer, the more it will stretch or if you have an flexible klimbingrope for instance.

I saw you use an anchor clamp of some description on yours, which can be attached to both bow cleats, thus spreading the load, can you let me know if its worth getting, is it easy to use, and if so what type is it. Maybe you should consider getting an underwater drone to check the anchor and bottom surface. Also consider getting rid of the anchor swivel as it makes the anchor less reliable. If you're afraid of chain twist, just straighten it once in a while at a dock, but why would it really twist so much to be an issue anyway.

If a Mantus or Rocna anchor doesn't set right away first time the best thing is to pull it all the way up and inspect it. Every time we've had an issue this technique has shown something stuck onto the anchor and fouling it. Crab traps, a gigantic heavy down parka coat that the point of the anchor had skewered like giant shish kabob, a billion tiny waterlogged sticks jammed in there...that sort of thing. Otherwise our Mantus has always set first time in 5 years of cruising with it and we rarely go to marinas.
