lu ten doomed himself with that one. anyone watching this show is going to assume that the fire nation is going to eventually lose the war. so if lu ten is putting out into the universe that he's not going to see his father again until after something that's never going to happen...
In the Tale of Iroh we see Iroh was walking around the city and helping people, and not just any people, they're the people of Ba Sing Se, the very city where he lost his son in. And right before he sings at his son's birthday commemoration he said "if only I could have helped you". Lu Ten's passing was really a big turning point in Iroh's life.
To add to that: Iroh first comforts a crying toddler, then teaches a group of teenagers about honesty and honor, and finally helps a young man turn his life around and make better choices, aka he did what a father should do for his son throughout the difficult moments of his life. Iroh was being the father he could never be for Lu Ten.
To rub salt into the wound, the portrait of Lu Ten is based on Mako at a younger age and the inscription translates, "General Iroh, I will see you again when victory is obtained. Your loyal son, Lu Ten." It is speculated that this was the last correspondence between Iroh and his son before Lu Ten's death in the Siege of Ba Sing Se.
Mako the voice actor for Iroh who passed away was also famous for a lot of movies. His most famous was the original Conan the Barbarian as a crazy wizard.
He also voiced many of the villains of my childhood ranging from, Aku from samurai jack to mojo from Powerpuff girls, he had a great passion for bringing villains to life as he believed every hero needed a villain of equal quality, however, he wanted his last character to be someone who helped everyone, he wanted iroh to serve a figure in people's lives to look upon for wisdom and love, his words " if only I could've helped you..." Was recorded on his deathbed, it was his last words to the all his audience.... R.I.P. MAKO
For Zuko, any affection has always come with attachments and pain. It says a lot about his trauma that he doesn't know how to process his emotions at that moment. So because he can't process it he gets standoff-ish and angry.

The way I understand it. is that Mako (the voice actor for Iroh) passed away after completing book 2. this episode was still in post production at the time of his passing. And they added the "In Honor of Mako." graphic at the end of Iroh's Tale, to honor the actor.
Iroh's tale is definitely a highlight in the whole series, one of my favorite moments with one of my absolute favorite characters and it still makes me cry. When I was younger I didn't care as much for Toph and Katara's outing but with time it's really grown on me, I really appreciate their growth as friends.
Iroh is not only one of the greatest characters in this show, but one of the greatest characters in any show. Such a perfect role model. We could do with some more Irohs in the world.
This is such a great episode. Iroh is always the highlight but people sleep on the other tales. I think Momo's is especially great because its easy to forget how close he & appa must be and how this is probably affecting him too. Aang's is one of my favorites as well just cuz its fun getting to see his natural charisma with people & animals in action.
It's so nice to see people's first viewing of leaves from the vine. The one he sings to the child in contrast to the memorial one. You can never get that first one back.
@@bunnytailsREACTS I hate to make it worse. But every person Iroh helps is a younger man in different stages of life, in need of different help. The infant needs comfort, the child needs honor and practicality, the young man needs guidance and reassurance, and lastly the his adult son who he can only apologize to. Aang is looking for Appa in the zoo. Toph had likely never had any one comment on her looks before, she was a brutal fighter, or the hidden daughter, or the person to be cared for. Star was the first person to comment, and it was an insult one Toph could never truly prove wrong. Zuko deserved to end up with tea girl. They had such great chemistry ruined by Ozai. I’ve heard that while recording the Leaves from the Vine scene that Mako was actually crying and not just acting since he knew he would soon pass. Makes it even more sad.
people rarely stop to consider that the reason Toph doesn't want her feet to be touched is because she sees through them, so she's very sensitive to any change of texture and, if they're not touching the ground she truly is blind
Since you’ve already seen the later episode where it is established Toph can tell if someone is lying I can point out that that makes Katara and Toph’s moment here even sweeter because Toph knows that Katara is telling the truth when she says that Toph is pretty.
So some extra background. Mako was the voice actor for Iroh, who passed away while Season 2 was airing. Season 3 has a different voice actor, but Mako did finish out this season. It’s rumored that “Leaves from the Vine” was the last thing he recorded prior to leaving the studio, knowing he was soon going to pass from cancer.
Mako was sick but finished season 2. He did pass away before this episode aired. This episode wasn't his last recording & didn't do it while on his "death bed".
I wish they left Iroh's tale for last. I can never fully focus on Aang or Sokka's 'cuz I'm still trying to put myself back together again after being shattered...
4:22 In this scene, Iroh isn't voiced by Mako Iwamatsu, as he has been up to this point, but by Greg Baldwin. Just for those couple lines though. Most people don't even notice at all.
So many emotions in one episode. Katara and Toph was heartwarming, Mako's was heartbreaking, Sokka and Aang's were silly, Zuko's was sweet, and Momo's.... 😭😭😭
There are many heavy objects in our universe. Like our Sun, a black hole, and a neutron star. It was discovered that the heaviest object ever recorded was Iroh singing "Leaves from the vine"
8:09 That's a zoo. Not a safari. But it's still an improvement compared to animal jail. Safari is an expedition of viewing animals in their natural habitat. In the wild. Zoo is essentially like a sanctuary. They are not in the wild, but (usually) in capable hands. Also, never try to mix animals randomly together. That will never end well.
@@bunnytailsREACTS Unfortunately, many people are convinced that every zoo in real life is like that prison where Aang relocated the animals from. Love you Bunny Iroh part always gets me emotional he changed after his son died it gave him a new perspective on life and he's so close to Zuko his nephew he said he thinks of him as his own early in season 1
Speaking of Zuko's affections, a reminder: in Book Two, Chapter Three, 'Return to Omashu', Azula and Mai talk about meeting Zuko again and Mai smiles. In Book Two, Chapter Seven, 'Zuko Alone', flashback Mai looks at Zuko and blushes; Azula then notices that and pressures Zuko into playing with them; she sets an apple on fire atop Mai's head and Zuko attempts to save her by plunging with her into the fountain, before storming off.
In the tale of Momo when you see the wild cats lead Momo to Oppa's paw print that was the spot where Oppa was keptured by the dyle, that foot print was out of range of the flipp that's why it's there.
One of my favorite episodes, even though "The Tale Of Iroh", and Iroh singing "Leaves From The Vine" emotionally wrecks me every time... 😢 I love how Katara and Toph actually really care about one another, even though they have vastly different personalities, and often don't get along due to that. Reminds me of me and a some of my friends and family; we often disagree and argue, sometimes a bit harshly, but we all know we'd gladly take bullets for each other. Aang's tale shows how sweet he is; at his core, he just wants to help everyone, from friends, to people he just met, to even the weirdest animal. He really is one of the kindest, most gentle souls ever! Sokka's tale shows us once again that a person can be a dopey goofball and really highly intelligent at the same time, while being a really great warrior, to boot. He's one of the best examples of the saying "Don't judge a book by its cover". Momo's short story is bittersweet, showing us that he's more intelligent that we may give him credit for, and that he really does love all the members of the group, especially his big buddy, Appa; you can really feel his heartbreak at how much he misses his friend, at the end of the tale. We get to see a glimpse of the sweet, nice kid that Zuko once was, before he got warped by his father's cruelty. Maybe, one day, he'll allow that part of himself to flourish once more, like his Uncle hopes... And speaking of... Iroh's story is just... well, you experienced it for yourself, and everyone gets the feels big-time whenever they see it...
