GAANMAN ADAAÏ AN OKANISI MAROON WHO BECAME GAANMAN OF THE MATAWAI MAROONS (1870-1893)
In this documentary I will tell you how in the past, da Fáka Noah Adaaï Vroomhart, an Okanisi Maroon, became Gaanman of the Matawai Maroons for 23 years.
The Maroons of Suriname and French Guiana consist of six independent communities: Okanisi, Saamaka, Matawai, Aluku, Pamaka and Kwiïnti. Each with its own traditional board: The Gaanman as primary leader of the community, a number of Kabiten as leaders of the various sub-communities (the Lo) and a number of Basiya as assistants to the Kabiten and the Gaanman.
In the early years of the Maroon history, it occur occasionally that the family from the Lo, which was to provide the Gaanman, did not have a suitable and adult person available for the gaanmanship.
The family then looked for someone from another Lo from the same Maroon community (Gaán-lo) to take on the gaanmanship for a certain period of time. After his death, the rightful person - who was too young at the time for the gaanmanship and is now old enough - would succeed him. This happened, for example, among the Okanisi and Saamaka Maroon communities, although this construction did not always work flawlessly. Something similar also occurred but successfully among the Matawai Maroons.
