I thought the first image was best out of the images and for me, the weather on the first day would be perfect for subtle pastel images and maybe black and white. Thanks for sharing your trip it makes me definitely want to visit there.
Gurunath Prabhudesai yes, agree with this comment - very useful to hear about your thoughts when finding and rejecting alternative compositions. The final image is great (of course!) but that 5 minutes of explanation stole the show 👍
Great video Simon. Excellent explanation of how you settled on that final composition. Less calming than your normal ones! You were out of breath there for a while. I'll be honest and say I prefer that first image which I think is gorgeous in its simplicity of form and colour palette. Looking forward to further chronicles from your adventure on Harris.
@@SimonBoothPhotography Well deserved mate, the amount of time you put in and your enthusiasm is wonderful. Plus, you are a fellow Lancashire lad, so that'll do for me any day of the week. Keep em coming, I am loving your videos, and love your shots too.
Hi Simon. So glad you've finally got some decent weather up there after your trip to Mull ! Really enjoyed your walk through of the process to create the final composition - and what a stunning image it is ! Can't wait to see more content from here. Many thanks for sharing.
Lovely work Simon. You do have a rather controlled and relaxed approach to things. I do tend to look at weather apps but doesn’t often persuade me not to still get out. It’s a magical place and on the bucket list. Love the simplicity of the first image and the shapes in the second speak for themselves 👍👍
Thanks James. I am paddling like god knows what underneath this calm exterior :-) For me at least, it always seems frantic and out of control, like spinning too many plates! I'm heading back there later in the year and want to try and cover some other locations. I hate travelling around from my base, but Harris has so much to see. Staying in the south is better than the north though in my opinion.
@@SimonBoothPhotography - Indeed. And you talking through your thoughts, ideas and showing your composition are all the good reasons I love to watch your videos. The photographs aren't too shabby either! :-)
Great video and loved the photographs you captured. I am planning a trip there in November and its really helped me regarding the Salt Marsh. I have seen many a photo of them and wondered how challenging they would be. . Thank you
Excellent film Simon! Good introduction clips and then a detailed story of salt marsh adventure culminating in the beautiful image at the end. When I saw it on the back of your camera, I knew it was going to come up great in the final version.
Cheers Ian. Bizarrely, this wasn't the shot. The one you saw was later in the week when I had a hail storm come through. I considered this to be a failure until I processed it and was pleasantly surprised just how well the Pentax had captured the colours. The one you saw is almost too colourful, but I have yet to look at it properly.
Hi Simon. Thanks again for sharing your video. It’s really useful to hear your decision making when deciding where to shoot from and what you were looking for in your composition. Keep up the great work!
Great stuff Simon, this has been on my watch later list for a while now as I wanted to make sure I had time to watch it properly. Lovely work at Luskentyre Beach (a wonderful location), but even better work at the saltings. Wonderful light and well worth the effort of picking out the composition.
I feel your pain Simon with the salt marshes and compositions, I was up a few years ago and when I arrived at this location I was really excited, I thought there must be compositions everywhere but there isn't, you've really got to hunt around to find something that works, you came up with lovely image in the end though, well done.
Thanks Stuart. Yes it's a difficult spot, but I was happy with this. I have another film to make where I have stood at a better known composition, but that's just too easy!
Thank you Phil. I plugged away at this location for two weeks on and off. I have another film to make of the same place in different light, so that will be an interesting comparison.
Absolutely fantastic! This was a superb video and what shots! I loved that one of the salt marshes and was definitely worth all the effort. It was really informative the walk through how you found your composition, thank you. The first shot was excellent too, and I’m presuming you edited the focus stacking yourself rather than rely on software? I’ve struggled in the past using software with grad filters, I got strange "smudges" for want of a better word. They weren’t there when I re-edited by hand. Thank you also for the accessibility information Simon, it is really useful for next year. We are definitely doing Harris for the big birthday now. I have a pair of chest waders for when I have to "knee walk" into streams and rivers to get a low angle shot because of my difficulties. I better leave them at home or I'll end up trying something silly and getting too fatigued to make my way back. I’m really looking forward to the rest of this series, as I’m sure it’s going to be excellent all the way through. Your production in this video was excellent and you really gave an impression of space. Well done and a third thank you for the entire video and the work you put into it.
Hi Mark - yes I manually edit the stack so the image transitions at the point where I want it to! I hope you do get to Harris, as it's truly wonderful and a very different pace of life. I am going back at the end of the year for sure! Thank you for your kind words again and for your observations of my method, most of which I am unaware of :-)
"Never trust a weather forecast" - ain't that the truth! I have lost count of the sunrises I have missed because the forecast was for low cloud. I really liked the first image of the beach, beautiful simplicity. Do you like it? You said in the video that you weren't sure that the shot worked. What do you think now you've had time to see it on the big screen?
Hello Chris and thanks for dropping in. Now that image?...I don't really know? I think I'd get bored of looking at it, but then it's not my style. I prefer punchy colour normally! Other people here seem to love it. As I type this from my slightly minimised screen, I can see it as a thumbnail to the side on my Photoshop recent list and it does look good, but I think the white matting helps.
Hi simon First shot nice and moody and last shot love the pinkish and purples I have been trying medium format with an old film camera and i am getting some good results
Well what a shocker to see this pop up. I am leaving for Harris and Lewis in the morning my first trip there. Can’t wait to see what’s on offer for me.
It’s been rubbish light for us. I am looking forward to seeing the rest of your work. I did not get up early once was not feeling it. It has made me think a little to how good I really am. No I mean how dedicated I really am. Maybe because I have my wife to think about, and can’t just go off alone hahah
@@paulcomptonpdphotography You just have to work the best with the hand you are dealt or choose! I was there with Ruth and the dog, but I'm usually back for breakfast and then out again and back for the evening meal. She like to read and go fo a run! On bad days I make it up by doing all the cooking, which is most of the time :-D
Lol agree. I felt a bit lazy mate did not get u early. I must say we did have good weather to get out and see the places unlike the horrid rain you started with haha. I do think your positive drive and commitment to getting up and focusing on the job in hand really pays off.
Beautiful photos, really love your videos :). So calm and beautiful to look at. One thing that popped into my head whey you had to refocus first foto, in stead of refocus, would it be possible to focus foreground first, then set the lens to infiniti ? would that work or would it be best to refocus to be 100% sure to get the focus correct ?
Hi Kenneth. Thank you for your comment and question. I always focus by eye. Sometimes on infinity, distant objects look less sharp than they do with a slight tweak, although I realise that you view through the lens at the widest aperture. It's more of a habit that I have never tested!
I thought the first image was best out of the images and for me, the weather on the first day would be perfect for subtle pastel images and maybe black and white. Thanks for sharing your trip it makes me definitely want to visit there.
Cheers for your thoughts John and...sorry for my late response.
Love these shots. Thanks for sharing.
Love that final image.
Thanks John
This points out the value in not jumping to a composition. The final one was really special.
Cheers Philip. There are likely a number of other good one's here that I have missed. I've also shot the classic, but that's not a s rewarding!
Nice Simon - enjoy hearing about your composition woes but a cracking shot in the end... I can feel the panic...👍
I see the comments on these old videos and I end up going back and watching them. I can't for the life of me remember the end of this one!
wonderful story telling wonderful images

Very nice! That second to last composition you considered might work nicely when the heather is in bloom.
